You can go for a standard sub from the start, I know that for sure.
About the free month, I couldn't tell you since I have the Disc version, however (idk what platform you're playing on) with my PS4 version, if I use the registration code in the game box in the PS store, it brings up a downloadable version of the game.

I planned on getting the Collectors Edition Digital Download for my Windows PC. It didn't say if it came with a time trial or not (probably not but the physical copy did no I'm not sure).
