"Take back that which we have lost" implies defense not offense. It is still possible that we took it from some one else first but using that phrase to imply aggressors isn't exactly what I would expect.
The first phrase on the other hand - "Everything ... will be ours" does imply some aggression and conquering. A sense of entitlement. But it could still be in the sense that the earth belonged to us and we will take it back. The leaked concepts said aliens invaded from the outer reaches of space. Even if we colonized the other planets in our solar system they could still be seen as more ours than the invading aliens.
In summary, no definitive view but I still think we're on the defense.

Edited by Spartan Ken 15: 2/15/2013 4:13:42 PMWhat I find interesting is mankind had a "golden age" where (I presume) Humanity had a massive empire in space. I am saying it could be possible humans were just as guilty as the aliens from the reaches of space. It is evident at some point in time, the human empire fell and Humanity was reduced toi1 city. Nothing is ever black and white, having a empire means you have to gain more land, and gaining more land means displacing the local natives. (Which Humans have done for thousands of years, why would it be different on an intergalactic scale?). The humans (maybe a faction) may think the aliens are inferior and should be conquered. This is all just a hunch but I think having no outright "good guy" would be interesting, especially if the story revolves around player choices. Although I wouldn't be evil :)

Yes, but you can assume the planets were uninhabited. Would that still make them aggressors? You can have a "golden age" without conquering other races/species. And I don't know that I would assume we have only a single city. The leaked stuff said last city on earth. But yes, it is possible we went and pillaged a bunch of planets from existing settlements and then got pillaged right back. That is not unheard of for the Human race.

I also assume (given there are other alien races) that there are a few inhabited planets out there. Also just because a planet is, uninhabited, doesn't mean it doesn't belong to someone. If a bunch of aliens took over Mars, Saturn, Uranus, Pluto, Mercury, etc, wouldn't that make people mad. After all, all those planets are in our system. I am sure Humans could take over uninhabited worlds but if they found a world where life could exist, why wouldn't they take it? Again, this is all speculation but I get a sense (someone or a group) wants to return humanity back to the golden ages. It is obvious these "aliens" are in the way of that, provoked or not.

I fully agree with your last statement. It makes for a good story anyways. Who wouldn't want to play a part in the rebuilding of the human empire? What better way to unite all of the gamers out there than under the human flag? As for the other part, we will hopefully get enough information to satisfy any curiosities regarding the matter on Sunday. (My bet will remain defensive though because everyone loves an underdog, its harder to justify your motives if you knew humans started the whole war anyways)

Edited by Spartan Ken 15: 2/15/2013 4:27:59 PMI think there will be people like Cerberus from Mass Effect who champion human superiority and want death to all non-humans. I do agree that the humans have to defend themselves from the threat of aliens coming to Earth, I just think if you have an expansive empire across the cosmos, it might be hard to avert abusing the natives of other worlds as you try and find new places to colonize and control. But humans could be completely innocent and kind to every new race they meet (lol, like we are to each other since the dawn of time). Still, should be interesting.

Phew, read Mass Effect and had to read the rest of that very slowly. Bought the third one last year and haven't been able to start playing it yet.
