"Better to reign in Hell than to serve in Heaven".

Milton, from Paradise Lost. It's what the devil says after being cast out of paradise (Heaven). Some would rather lead as a Tyrant than be a soldier of God. This is what Toland says during this week's mission. He's talking about Mara.

It’s not dialogue in a mission, you’re referring to the optional Ascendant Challenge dialogue, the Ascendant Challenge just so happening to be a part of this weeks quest. Also completely ignores the more obvious interpretation of the cited quote to apply it to Mara where it doesn’t make any sense. Toland is referring to himself and his own transformation from Guardian of the Last City to Ascendant. Edit: Forgot to mention that the dialogue is 5-6 years old and is entirely randomised, so this has no relevance to the seasonal narrative. Edit 2: Hilariously it’s also come to my attention that OP believes that Toland has been cursed between his death in the Hellmouth and us dispelling his Nightmare in Shadowkeep. Meaning that the very dialogue he is attempting to use to prove his theory can’t be relied upon.

You know what is interesting to me? Respective how this week ended.... Spoilers:
Although Mara presented the method as "novel" she betrays that logic when she referenced Sedia and other Techuen's that had been previously cleansed of Taken corruption. Both things cannot be true. If that is the case, why not Uldren?
Mara...
Set her brother up.
Furthermore, it seems as though... no effort was made to cleanse the other egg, the one she hid from us. Why not? And if Xivu, truly, still has control over the Vex... why wasn't last week's egg compromised or any of the previous eggs we've collected? I think this week was a message, it was clue. It was to communicate to us that Mara let...
Uldren be taken, and that after he had been... she could have saved him easily, she could have cleansed the Taken corruption, but chose not to.
That's my theory. That was the purpose of this week. To show us that. Riven, the spirit of Riven... whatever is controlling Riven keeps saying, "It was not my whispers". They keep saying it was not them, Riven, who actually took Uldren & corrupted him. Do you believe her? I do 😇 👍💠. If not her, then who? Mara also, almost admitted outright her "modus operandi" as a manipulator. When the paths before you cannot lead to your desired outcome, what does she do? What did she do? She placed the stones, she engineered the path. When the Awoken did not acquiesce to her political desires what did she do? She puppet'd the 2nd queen from the shadows, she started the war. When she wanted to leave the source (singularity) while others wanted to try and return to the Distributary... that was Alis Li's plans.... What happened? Alis Li, mysteriously disappeared. The final VO from this week: Osiris, "How do you see the end so clearly? Even within the Infinite Forest, I could not predict as you do". [I believe it's the mystery boon she stole from Alis Li, and that boon is a fragment of Soteria]. Mara Sov, "Clairvoyance is a charade. The ground shifts beneath us as we walk. We manage best when we make our own steppingstones. You know better than most how many times we've had to adjust our methods to achieve victory. [Remember Brother Vance, he was a spy for Mara Sov]. My death at Saturn to pierce Oryx's defenses...." [A lie. Oryx would have never had his opportunity but for the extermination of Amhakara instigated by one Mara Sov. He wouldn't have known the Dreaming City was vulnerable had she not signaled the enemy with the Oracle Engine. Riven and her brother would have never been corrupted but for Mara Sov's actions]. Osiris, "Countless recalculations against the Vex. Stealing Savathun's secrets from within". [Stealing?... when? What secrets? How did she use them]? Mara, "The planting of the Silver Tree on Io." Osiris, "I took some convincing on that. But it truly was the beginning....". [Remember Arecibo, the beginning....] Mara, "Sagira's death, Crow's choices, your new perspective - none of these were part of the plan". [What plan? Crow's choices... "CROW'S" choices]? Osiris, "Each adjustment came at a cost. I wonder what costs the Witness has yet to extract from us". Mara, "Whatever they are, we will meet them & persevere".

    • Toland warns in the intro to Dreaming City that it’s a place of scheming Queens.

I was going to wait, but it's out there... and it's "technically" in-game. Unforeseen Consequences "BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. He remembers his sister's throne differently: an amalgam of Eliksni flotsam built from the spoils of war, its great weight suspended from the rafters. A throne Uldren set ablaze in the wake of losing her. His first step down a forsaken path. Crow lays a hand on the throne before him. It is empty and ponderous, silhouetted by distant nebulae and cosmic dust. It feels smooth. Too smooth. "It was here that I first heard the news of your death," calls a familiar voice behind him. He turns to see his sister striding down the hall. Mara takes her place beside him and gazes out into the far reaches of space. "Did you mourn for me?" Crow asks. "I did," his sister replies. She is silent for a moment. "And I regret what I did to you. The manipulation, the subtle coercion. None of it went the way I intended." Crow follows her gaze out into the endless void. "I know what that's like." "Remorse and recriminations," Mara says absently. She turns her eyes toward him. "If you could go back, alter the course of your history, what would you change?" He can't help but laugh. "Where to begin?" Crow muses with a smirk. It fades soon enough. "Cayde," he whispers. Mara raises an eyebrow. "Oh?" "Before then, I could have taken a different road. But once I pulled that trigger…" He shakes his head. "Everything else, I can set right. But not that. I just wish I could tell him I shouldn't have done it." "I see," Mara murmurs. Her eyes shine in the starlight. Crow sighs and rolls his shoulders back. "I should get going. Vanguard's waiting on my report." "We all have our obligations, I suppose." "Don't I know it." Crow nods as he heads down the hall. He pauses at the portal to the Dreaming City and glances back at Mara. Ringed by the distant nebulae, she shimmers like a mirage on desert sands. And then Crow is gone. "See you soon." Mara's voice echoes across the empty chamber as the illusion fades. "O brother mine.""
