Thought on the Steam Deck?

Valve showed off a portable system to play steam games today. It honestly looks alright, but I'll wait for release to see how the hardware works with games I want to play. It's also isn't locked down so you can install windows or probably emulator's

  • I think cooling may be an issue. There were issues with the Nintendo Switch cooling, that's an ARM processor like what is in your phone and tablet. The Steam Deck will have an AMD Ryzen Zen 2 processor. Even laptops have poor cooling performance. They have more area for heat dissipation than the handheld form factor would. I expect cooling issues. We'll just have to wait and see.

  • It has a lot of potential to be very very good. But, on the other hand, it could also 100% be very disappointing as well lol. I will keep an eye on it out of curiosity but I probably won't buy one.

I think the smartest decision they’re making with this device is the ability to load 3rd party software. I would’ve had zero interest in it otherwise. But now.. I’m curious. The thought of having a device that can run Win10 for work, then hop on a game easily during lunch, then right back to work? With a built in controller and still being more portable than a laptop? Yeah, that’s appealing to me. I won’t get hyped until reviewers get their heads on em and we see how well it operates. But I’m definitely keeping my eye on it.

  • Actually, as a primarily PC gamer, I'm excited for this. Here's my main reason: Family I have family that I visit occasionally, and will watch their pets when they're on vacation and such. There are times where I'm kinda stuck just sitting on my phone, browsing the internet, because I can't leave without upsetting anyone, but everyone is doing something. This would let me occupy myself without hauling around my PC (I don't have a gaming laptop). Also, it would allow my to play games when hanging out with my friends (without cramming us both into my small office haha).

  • 🤷🏾 On one hand, the hardware is impressive, the idea of a portable gaming console with PS5/Xbox Series specs is intriguing. However, I’m not really sure what the intended market is. The whole entire endeavour reminds me of Valve’s Steam Machines ( which flopped badly ). If you are a Steam user, chances are you already have a gaming PC, so why would you want this, unless you really need to play your Steam games on the go. This feels like Valve creating new hardware just for the sake of saying they are in the hardware market, but this console doesn’t need to exist.

Eh...I don't see myself getting it. Unless the battery is made with some sort of breakthrough technology, you're going to be tied to a wall outlet if you plan on gaming for any extended amount of time, so might as well just stick with a gaming desktop or laptop.

        • If I didn't have a decent PC I'd be stoked. ... but I do... so... ... yeah... a feature that I might use 1% of the time (portability) doesn't justify $400 (plus the cost of memory expansion) for me. That said, I like the concept. Had the new Switch model been this, I'd be all over it (again though, only because I don't already have a Switch).

How does that work when Steam games are usually played with a keyboard & mouse? Trackpads don’t work too well for video games. That said, I don’t have a PC, and there are plenty of Steam games I’ve wanted to play, so any dedicated Steam device could be pretty nifty; I would love to try Quantum Protocol!

            • Depends on how much you want to spend. $600+ for the top unit. Hopefully this is just a sign of things too come in the future for handheld gaming.

              • I'd rather blow half of its price on a new PC GPU and a Nintendo Switch lite or whatever it's called if I really had the need for a portable. A "several hours" lasting battery for a portable sounds way too fishy for 500€+

It should utilize motion controls, and brain waves. edit: Is the name meant to be like the “holo deck.”

                • It looks and sounds good, but man, that battery life. Devices like this live or die by it and it's not a portable if you have to be tethered to an external source most of the time to use it.

                • I kinda hope it takes a chunk of business away from Nintendo so they stop being complacent and improve themselves. Nintendo has held the monopoly on dedicated handhelds for way too long.

                  • The only reason I would get into steam again is to see if Skyblivion or Fallout 4: New Vegas turn out any good, since they obviously won’t be coming to consoles. Probably not worth the money in that case given those mods inevitably won’t live up to the hype, but if I did want to get back into PC gaming this is the first thing I’d look at now that I know it exists.
