A pure democracy (rule by popular vote) is a more eloquent way of saying “mob rule”.

I dont think direct democracy is a good system, but i also dont think the electoral college is a good solution either. Direct democracy would lead to only states with large populations decide the president. The electoral college was created to create equal representation. Imo, it didn't achieve that goal. It didn't create equal representation it created different representation (specifically representation in states with less population but many rural communities). This gives the power to midwestern states, and states similar to midwestern states. Most of the population in these states are white and less-educated. In a perfect world, a system would allow equal representation by proportionally weighing the vote by state, race, gender, ethnicity, occupation, etc. But that is unrealistic. Im not sure if there is a good solution to equally representing every group in America, but the electoral college isn't doing that.

2 RepliesElectoral college is dumb lmao

6 RepliesThe Electoral College was created so that the president was voted for by well-educated, well-informed voters. Cheap and easy access to information via the Internet makes it useless, since everyone can be well-educated and well-informed. The main counter to this seems to be “misinformation can be spread online so it can make voters NOT well informed”, to which I counter with how the Electoral College is what gave us Trump, so it’s clear they’re not very well educated and/or well informed either.

17 RepliesAnd so the solution is the side with less support making the decision? What’s that Churchill quote? “Democracy is the worst form of government except for all the other ones”

1 ReplyWe are not a "Democracy," we are a "Representative Republic."

4 RepliesEdited by MagicalTaco117: 2/18/2020 3:13:08 AMI mean, simply put, New York City and California don’t know what’s best for the other 48 states, but if we elected based on popular vote, that’s what would happen. https://mk0brilliantmaptxoqs.kinstacdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2016nationwidecountymapshadedbyvoteshare-600x380.png?5e4154587a227

1 ReplyAnother reason it's good: Hillary Clinton would be president

3 Replies🤔 So you're saying that you're ok with a small group of people choosing who gets elected regardless of who the people want?....
Do you also roll over on command and show your belly to your masters when they enter the room?
1 ReplyIt was established when the states were far more distinct than they are now. In 1787, the idea that once you joined the USA you were irrevocably bound to it didn't exist yet. Also, because there was no interstate system, the states were more distinct. So naturally, the less populous states wanted an advantage, or not to have a disadvantage. Now, it's a different world. The country is more homogeneous. And the simple fact is that a vote from a Wyomingite or North Dakotan counts three times more than a Californian vote. Not sure that's entirely fair.

Well spoken.
Sorry, all out of salt.
... Better progress would be detailing why mob rule sucks (ie; the French Revolution)...
not included in the DLC
1 ReplyThe minority population and the small states are already protected from majority rule by having two members in the senate. Senators are arguably the most powerful politicians in the country. Essentially every single one of them can kill a bill with a filibuster. They serve longer individual terms than the president, and since there are only 100 of them have a huge sway over how things become law. Mostly, I am sick and tired of the popular vote vs electoral college debate. Both systems are terrible, especially when poised in our first past the post voting system. There are other systems in the world and ours isn't the best just because it is old.

4 RepliesAgreed but it sucks that some states are creating laws that ignore the Electoral College completely.

2 RepliesEdited by Jono: 2/17/2020 5:43:05 AMYall really want California to decide every election if we get rid of the Electoral College? This shithole votes to have a tax thrown on top of an already existing tax on gas.

1 ReplyDemocrats: let everyone go to College Also Democrats: eliminate the Electoral College Sounds like the libs don't want people to get an education in elections after all

In America because it is a Constitutional Republic, Democracy is a PRIVILEGE not a right. That is why people that demand everything be in a committee look sniveling, it is because they are too full of and addicted to the self important insistent, demanding, "entitled" groupthink mindset being spread by the Government entities[including the media] that use poor vs poor to cause unfair competition for resource materials needed by the citizens of the US tax farm. Those materials are held hostage for profit from the sheeple in order for the wealthy[the tax farm "owners"] to stay affluent and out of "menial" manual labor camps that are designed to push false upward mobility hopes. Same with universities, churches, medical, psychological... Institutions globally. You are a digit... Nothing more. And you have the right to vote in these democratic "proceedings"🙄 because when those who serve the "established" agenda need a scapegoat.... Its you. Cuz you voted for... [Enter fool politician's name here]. Wait till Dems "majikally" 😜 regain the White House and all the Red Hat Maga idiots are pubic enemas #1. Dont think it'll happen?... and folks BELIEVED Hillarious Clinton was a LOCK in 2016... I did too to be honest. Hard to believe any trash that comes from global authority anymore. Their breath stinks like lies and dog s$@t...
