Thoughts on a Gambit with no PvP?

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share an idea I had, and I know not many people will like it but I'm hoping you can consider it and let me know what will or won't work. When I first learned of Gambit being made a while ago, I was under the impression that there would be no direct PvP aspects, that is, you do compete against other players, but you don't combat other players; I knew about motes and how Gambit worked, but I didn't know about the invasion mechanic, and I was excited for it. As a player who doesn't much enjoy PvP, I was happy to have a way of competing without direct confrontation, but of course upon release, I learned about the invasion mechanic and how it wasn't truly competitive PvE, as such I've grin and bared it but have always thought that it could work without PvP while still providing the same level of competitivity. This version of Gambit could be called Gambit Light, and would work the same in that you defeat enemies, collect motes, and bank them, blockers would also work the same way, as would the primeval, but we would need something to replace the invaders and the way they function. I went through multiple ideas but I believe I have come up with a suitable replacement; when the invasion portal would normally be active, in it's place the "invader" would hit a switch which would spawn a shield drone to the other side, this drone will appear in a random place on the map and remain for 30 seconds, during this time players dying while a primeval is active will heal it as it would normally with an invader, while the drone remains, players will slowly be drained of their currently held motes too to simulate dying and losing them all. This mode won't allow use of the Gambit armour's perks as the invader armour would be useless. Gambit Light wouldn't change anything about Gambit or Gambit Prime, so players who still love slaughtering their fellow guardians in cold blood will still be able to at their pleasure, this is just a place for players to compete without the increasing dread caused by the oncoming threat of inevitable death... It can still happen from enemies if they're not careful, but not from other guardians. And voilá! Competitive PvE. Thoughts? Can anything be improved? What do you think?

  • I just completed a marathon Gambit session over the weekend. I lost track of time because the Gambit game format demands dynamic counter-play against an intelligent opponent invader. If invaders were not present, then there would be no real threat to challenge players and make them improve their game play. Sure, I lost more than I won since I was solo-queuing vs. 4-stacks, but that's not the point. The invader threat is a genuine challenge, not just another PVE face roll mob. Anything less than a thinking player opponent is just another easy kill for anyone. This would result in a boring experience that lacks long term replay value.

      • This has my vote. It would literally harm no-one if another gambit playlist without the pvp aspect was added. Perhaps the blockers could be a little beefed up or could spawn in groups like 1 original minion + 2 red bar taken phalanxes or something like that. The mote requiremend could be a little higher to compensate the risk of losing them upon getting killed by an invader. I've seen my fair share of invaders doing nothing besides camping the portal. Having an option for a playlist where this possibility is disabled would be nice.

          • I think a high loss of motes is an option. I also think that if you limit the invasion to one each team member would be a good idea too. The same person can't continuously invade. Or have a cycle through mechanic. The invaders MUST take turns.

                • I think you should have to spend motes to invade. Can choose to put notes in the bank+send blocker OR open the portal for invasion. Would make invading much more of a “gambit”.

                  • For me invading was a major part of the flow of Gambit. Without the PvP aspect full teams would have a ridiculous meta abuse advantage, and skillgaps would play too much into the gamemode. If you know your invader spawns and can invade yourself well, Gambit is a pretty carryable gamemode. If it was only PvE then it would completely be about mathematical advantage.

                    Wouldn’t be Gambit then. Take away one of the only game changers in the game mode. With strictly PvE, it would become very predictable.

                    • I prefer Gambit over Crucible I wouldn't mind like a mode were it'd be a reckoning Competitive. Who can get through 3 rounds of extremely simple mechanics quick and fight a random boss out of a small pool of bosses before the other.

                    • iv spent over a year now pondering on what gambit needs to be a better mode, and this is something iv thought of my self. im a huge advocate of gambit but i dont play it due to many balancing reasons. one major issue is invaders there is no denying that, i dont care who you are are if you are a 4 stack or playing solo. invaders have such a massive advantage in almost every aspect of the mode. outright removing it though kinda kills a big portion of the identity of what the mode is. some solutions iv seen and agree with are. -remove wall hacks from invaders -remove heavy ammo from either invaders or in general. -invading costs 10 motes to use the portal from you. ( meaning you have to have 10 motes unbanked and collected. then you are allowed to use the portal.) -invaders can only kill players/deny motes up to 20. ( meaning if you kill a person with ten motes and then another with 15, you will be pulled out as you have denied the max amount allowed to deny. it makes planning out who your targets are going to be and who you should kill first in order to kill/ deny the most motes possible.)

                      • they kill the invasion crap then it might be really fun. but when your team has a prime eveal the other team invades all the the damn time

                      • Bungie wants ro reduce the Gambit mods, so there is few chance it happens, peetige Gambit or regular Gambit may disappear. Despite that, i think there are too much invasions in Gambit, it is especially boring when you are invaded each 30 seconds by a SUPER SWEATER PVP PLAYER named XXX_GarDians-SlayYerS_Dredgen-Malphur-sAsuKe_69_XXX who only use PVP meta weapons.

                      • Just limit the number of invasions to force the other team to be strategic instead of spamming their use. And make the invading team pay a price in motes lost or primeval health gain if the invader is killed. Then it makes invasion more risky for both.

                        • I would rather them keep Gambit the way it is and invest time and energy into newer content rather than redesigned old stuff. But I wouldn't be upset if it did happen haha

                        • Open world pvp is part of the identity of Gambit. Take that away and you’re playing something fundamentally different.

                          • Mmmm....its not really pvp in the traditional sense. I invade and kill invaders. It's a completely different dynamic than The experience of crucible. I can invade and team wipe with thousand voices as they try to burn the boss and then super them respawning...that's not a skill..like jump shooting. I think in gambit you just need to coordinate on invades.like you do for a boss. Save a super, save some heavy..there are four of you...push the invader. I know its stressful. But I do not think its analogous to pvp in the traditional sense. Meaning you dont need to be competative god to be a great invader or kill invaders. I like gambit a lot. To me it's fun lazy play. I run solo mostly...look at the mote counts and try to do smart invades and watch for invaders. Randy's throwing knife, symmetry, nameless midnight, good scouts are a good invaders tool right now.
