Make 'New Light' optional

Returning D1 & 2 vet here. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE the idea of New Light. I get that it is to help bring new players up to speed to help them dive in to the post game activities, and to let long time players skip all the things they have done a thousand times before and get straight to the good stuff, BUT - To start off, it throws you straight into an open world with minimal direction. For a new player that can be pretty overwhelming. I've had a few friends playing for the first time tell me they just couldn't get into it as it just seemed too directionless. Everything is already unlocked and you can pretty much do as you please. That's great for people who know what they are doing and want to jump straight in, but for a lot of people it kills half the charm and fun of the game. So many people love exploring and unlocking things at their own pace. It also makes the content more fun and exciting, instead of just motions they have to go through to tick something off on their Triumph list. Me personally, I'm playing a fresh account and slowly chipping through the story for the nostalgia trip, but it feels way too easy. Everything is rushed - light level, weapon and armour drops, heck the first thing I did was a strike before any missions as Zavala gave me a quest for it and I got 2 legendary drops. For someone new that would be quite confusing. I get Shadowkeep is where the game is now, but there is so much decent content in the previous expansions that is just such a waste to rush through, or skip entirely. Please make the 'New Light' method an option. Let people jump in fresh if they still wish to do so. Let them have that excitement of unlocking a new area or part of the story bit by bit. That's where the original charm of Destiny is.

  • You should have the option to get boosted after you have one character go through all the steps. Doesn’t make Sense to throw new players into the world with little to no direction after the opening

New Light Imo should be only for your second and third character. Your first character should play through the Destiny 2 story as normal, so you can understand all the game's characters and what everyone in the game is talking about. But yeah, not even having the option to start off the game by playing it's main story is just a really odd design decision.

    • I tried it out on a second account out of curiosity, mainly to see how that first mission looks now. I agree with this. I played on a bit trying to see it from a new player's perspective, but I think I would have been totally baffled if I had never played Destiny before. Cayde is mentioned several times - even the fact that he's dead - but his voice is in some of the missions. A lot of what I played seems to make the assumption that the player knows the background. And the fact you can access the Moon straight away and Eris and Ghost speak of events from the past with no explanation... You can't even do the campaigns without picking them up from Amanda (?!) and there's no waypoint to tell you to do this. You just grind XP to unlock the planets and quests, starting with Titan. You got the quests, but no context. If I was totally new I would really need some help.

    • Destiny typically doesnt have any type of instructions on how to do stuff or what to do next. They expect us to figure stuff out on our own. THey dont even sell a strategy guide and let others make guides to help the community. Can your friends look at some videos to see what to do? Guides have been a thing since Nintendo Entertainment System, check them out if you dont know what to do. New Light, isnt it just year one content? Vanilla D2, Curse of Osiris and Warmind? Plus all locations are opened up along with Crucible, Gambit and PVP? What more direction do you need besides that?

      • What in the world happened to exploration, experimentation, and figuring things out for yourself? Do New Light players really need hand holding like that? The opening mission of New Light end with you at the Tower right? So you have a few people to talk to I'm sure. Why wouldn't curiosity or common sense tell you to check everybody? Eventually you'd end up at Amanda.

        • No it doesn't, I made a new ACC to see what it was all about, they litterally spoon feed you all the way to 920, then they tell you everything about everything, then you have fun, it's fine the way it is
