Time for a more serious rant

So you saw the title, it’s one in the morning and I need to rant otherwise I’ll be up another hour. Before I say anything this is gonna be a little more personal of a post so if you don’t like that then I don’t know what to tell ya. Anyways, rant time. So do you guys ever feel like at the end of the day you’ve just been going through the same routine every. Single. God. Forsaken. Day? Cuz that’s how I’ve been feeling for the past couple of months, I haven’t really felt like I’ve accomplished anything and am just doing little to nothing (outside of school and work) every day. I wake up, knock out school, do chores, listen to music, game, and sleep. I do literally nothing. And by god it it driving me insane. I already see you typing “BuT jUsT tRy SoMeThInG nEw VeGgIe!”. Here’s the thing. I procrastinate big time, like holy crap it’s pitiful. There are so many projects I want I work on that my mind is just like “Eh, do it later.” SPOILER ALERT! LATER USUALLY MEANS NEVER FOR MY STUPID HEAD! And yes, I’ve tried to stop it many a time. Usually I’m good for a while, then I see the end goal takes longer than expected and just go back to the way I was before. It sucks big time. But I’ve been thinking allot about my future recently and I think I’ve found out why. You see, I struggle a crap load with self doubt. When it comes to writing, appearance, just about everything. I’m not very skilled at many things and am not exactly very athletic. So, I constantly beat myself up, because procrastination and self doubt are a sucky, sucky combo. Rehab was actually my third attempt (and honestly my laziest one) at writing a full short story. I had attempted one beforehand that I honestly just was super unhappy with, so instead of changing it to satisfy me I just threw it away. The other was going to be a full book, but I had stopped writing not even 2 chapters in because the end goal was so far away. I just can’t find a way to continue something without beating myself up to the point where it’s not even fun or a hobby anymore, but rather something to think on and pass time. Recently I found out about a little more on blacksmithing and decided to try and take it up as soon as possible (living in a rv till a house is built makes some things tough:(). This is going to be my first step in beating that bad habit into the ground. Hopefully it works out. So yeah, there’s all my personal junk. Right there, in a steaming pile of blegh. I just needed to rant on about that since I don’t have to many people irl to tell and a few of you have actually become somewhat close friends to me:). Sorry for talking so much lol, rant over. Imma go sleep now before my eyes fall out.
The Veggie has spooketh
• For me at least, I do run the same routine every day. I get up, do hygeine stuff, go to work, get home, eat at 2, 5, and 8, play games inbetween, do hygeine stuff, watch an episode of (insert current show here) to help put my little brother to bed, write a little bit, then go to sleep. So you might think that I would run into the same problems, right? That this treadmill lifestyle makes me feel like I never get anything done.. But it doesn’t. It used to, but then I realized something. I’m not going to be able to get off the hampster wheel, I have to work in repeating schedules, that’s just how my brain works. So instead of getting off the wheel, I decided to make the wheel into something I want. I took my GED a few months back, and in order to get it done I added another step to my schedule; at 9:30 every day I’d study until 10. I wanted to draw something a little while back, so from 7-8 I stopped playing games and started drawing. I kept letting my facial hair grow too much, so now every Monday I add “shave” to that hygeine stuff. And once you insert what you want intothat schedule, then you might still be on a loop, but it’s a loop you chose, and one you’ll be much happier with. On the writing bit specifically, you’ll always be unhappy with your own work, even if it’s a masterpiece. Share it with someone you trust, who can offer praise & constructive criticism. It’ll help improve both the writing, and your self confidence.

  • You have gotten into the habit of procrastination because you have positively reinforced that habit, as in you reward yourself before even accomplishing the desired tasks. You need to “rewire” your brain by rewarding proactive behavior and neglecting reward for procrastinating behavior. It’s not as hard as it sounds. Here’s an example you can try: Make a list of shit to do. It doesn’t have to be long or complicated. It could be as simple as your morning routine. Brush your teeth. Put on clothes, etc. Here’s the twist: reward yourself with something like a snack or treat every time you accomplish a task. Use goldfish or saltine crackers or jellybeans or something, like one goldfish or one cracker per accomplishment. Because the treat is something you enjoy, you are rewiring your brain with comfort, oxytocin. This positivity reinforces your desired behavior. Over time, you will eventually, sooner rather than later, change your behavior.

  • The fact that you recognize and want to fix the problem shows that you are able to fix it. Don't give up, you can do this

    • How to help break the habit of procrastinating and become more proactive in life: 1- Your alarm clock. As soon as it goes off, get up, out of bed, stand up, have a shower, brush your teeth, etc. literally the moment you wake up from it, just instantly do it. Don’t even lie in bed for a second or hit snooze. Alarm = up. Do not set multiple alarms before the time you actually need to wake up. If you need to be up at 7, then set it for 7. Don’t set one for 6:40, one for 6:43, one for 6:52, one for 7:07 to remind you that you’re running late. One alarm, when it goes off, you get up. End of story. 2- More punctuality and accountability. Start making appointments for things that you already do every day. Involve other people on your plans whenever you can. Lunch at work? Plan what time you will go to lunch, and go with a coworker. This way you have another person you’re being held accountable to. Make plans with others In advance when possible, so on Monday make lunch plans for the whole week (or whatever other activities you can plan for that match your lifestyle). You might already be a very punctual person, but try to make more plans with set times during your week that require punctuality. 3- Sharing excitement and results. When you want to do something, plan the time, and then before it happens talk to other people about it and get excited. Talk about your goal, what the result will be, and what you will have accomplished by a certain deadline. Talk to people who might be excited and enthusiastic for you, and would want to see the results. Talk to people who would help motivate you and that you would be proud to show your accomplishments to. For example, with blacksmithing, talk to a girl you like about setting up your blacksmith shop. Say something like “I’m really excited for the weekend. I’m going to set up my blacksmith shop this Saturday.” She might think it’s cool, and she might not overtly motivate you, but she will motivate you in the fact that you will want to be able to tell her how it went, as opposed to telling her “oh, I just slept in and then played video games instead.” next time you see her. 4- Become more spontaneous. Use a countdown to procrastinate and then do something in the moment. So if there is something you feel like you want to do, and you know you could do it now, but will probably procrastinate, tell yourself you will procrastinate for 30 seconds. Count to thirty in your head. During the countdown, stand up, grab your keys/jacket/etc. and walk to the door, your garage, your car, and be ready to go at the end of your countdown. The countdown method sounds kind of dumb but it can really help. It gets your mind off of excuses, and helps get you in a mentality of just doing something at the time you think about it. Procrastination is usually caused by a combination of lack of confidence, failure to make time, lack of motivation, and a mentality of ambiguity. Using these techniques helps address those issues in smaller ways, to help form smaller habits that come together in a way that help you escape the procrastination mindset.

    • I too suffer from procrastination. Heck, one of my English Project Groups agreed to take up the name Team Procrastination right after I suggested it. Science project due in two weeks? Let’s not do it and completely overestimate the size of a BACKGROUND RESEARCH PAPER! Tried making a short story for this “30-day challenge” project. Couldn’t do it. Both writers block and delay delay delay. Thought of making another short story purely for Off Topic. Never got bast half a chapter. Let’s not talk about Chinese homework. Honestly i just think that’s due to me not being unenthusiastic. I’d be more willing for German or Russian or maybe even Spanish... scratch Spanish, French. Self Doubt? Ummm. I’ve deleted a few sentences right now, so yeah. I doubt myself during tests too and end up having switched from the right answer to the wrong answer, but hasn’t happened in a while. I usually mumble because I’m not sure what I’ll say makes sense or is right or is a good answer. Hence why I’m on here more cause I can edit it away... I just realized how sad my life can be. Wait. Did I just write paragraphs? I’m on break. I can’t do that! Somebody shoot me or something (plz don’t it’s a SW:AOTC reference)

    • You got this, I am super lazy as well but what helps me is to absolutely push through it and when I’m finished I feel satisfied with my work and that encourages me to do work hard on more things.

    • Make small changes to your routine everyday. Like maybe just say that you want to write one paragraph a day. Once you get good at it, do 2, so on and so forth. Don’t try to make big changes because as you progress it becomes more daunting, you don’t want to do that forever. Small changes allow you to get comfortable instead upending everything you do.
