I haven't played the game since they started that infusion crap. I dread the thought of having to equip certain gear just to level up. I would rather have the old infusion system back and be able to play with the gear I want to play with.

You don't have to equip it to level up your Power. When the game calculates the Power for the piece of gear you get, it looks at all the gear you have wherever it is, even in your bank and postmaster. It only becomes an issue when you need that powerful gear to play some high difficulty content.
