The Taken King expansion was a digital expansion, and it sounds like you bought it on PS3. This expansion does not transfer to PS4, which is why the game is asking you to purchase it again.

Since there is not point of complaining about purchasing if I want to play it again, what will happen with armour and play level? My friend told me the max cap is 34 without The Taken King, and my main titan is level 40 with all Taken King armour and weapons. If I unequip my weapons or armour will I be able to equip them again? I am rather worried.

To be honest, I'm not completely sure. If you hover over TTK weapons and gear, does it say anything about using them or not being able to use them?

There was nothing hovering over them, so I entered a gamble and swapped. All my current gear and weapons are a-ok. However, I'm not sure if new items I get will be the same. I will try to come back if there are any more issues
