Daybreak Wars Ch. 6 pt. 1: A Day Without Light

Towers and street lights spun in circles, looking down at the Guardian prone on the concrete. Angel slowly raised, then rolled over onto her elbow and felt her head; she was experiencing the worst migraine she could imagine. Finally, the world stopped spinning and her senses came to. “Alice, what happened?” she asked, but there was no reply. “Alice, did we get shot down?” Still no reply. Angel pushed herself up, but she could only get to her knees before her migraine tried to drag her back down. A shrill ringing shot into one ear and exited from the other. “Alice, are you all right?!” the titaness screamed, trying to overcome the buzzing pain in her skull.     “A-A-Angel… It's the Traveler… the-the-the Light… The Cabal, they… blocked it... “ Alice’s once pristine voice sounded mechanical; wherever she was, she was weak.     Angel looked up at humanity's savior; it seemed dark, as if a shadow fell over it. Angel shifted the rubble around looking for her ghost; a small piece of concrete fell from the building she was propped against, and it struck her hard. Angel fell prone again, tears rolling down her cheek. The woman forced open her eyes and she saw half of her helmet, fire shooting out of a hole in the shattered visor.     Fueled with determination, Angel forced herself up, but she fell over again; she was unbalanced. Alice, after building up energy, used her shell as claws and climbed out of a small crater close by. “It's your wings,” she said. “You're m-m-missing one…”     Angel rolled onto her back and gazed up. One of her wings had sliced into a wall and got caught in it; sparks shot from frayed wires where the wing once attached to her jetpack. Alice used what little Light she had and healed Angel’s various burns and gashes. Angel, now feeling slightly stronger, sat up and cradled her ghost. With her free hand, the woman wiped away her tears and looked around at the chaos and death that surrounded her, but seemed to keep its distance from her.     Moments later, a legionnaire found the helpless titaness and took it upon itself to elicit as much pain and suffering as it could before she would die. Angel, crying and panicking, tried to jump to her feet, but her malfunctioning wing weighed her down. The Cabal grabbed the wing and ripped it off, even throwing Angel a small distance in the process, then stomped on her. She gasped and pathetically beat the side of its boot. The Cabal grabbed her arm and threw her against a wall, resulting in a crack in the wall and her armor; all the while Alice watched helplessly, screaming curses at the beast. Angel sat up on her knees and gazed at the legionnaire, but it threw her back to the ground by the lock of her hair. It must have been bored, now it aimed its slug rifle at the back of her skull.     Pow!     The Cabal fell to the ground, still writhing around. Logan ejected the only shell out of the shotgun he found, then threw down the weapon. He walked over to the soldier and crouched down by its helmet, making sure the beast could see him. “You crossed a dangerous line when you did that…” he declared before punching the helmet into the ground with all of his might, shattering it and killing the beast.     Immediately after, Logan felt the pain of his wrist breaking course through him; he fell to his knees, gripping his arm and screamed. After attempting to block out the pain, he sat down by Angel, helped her up, and wiped away her tears. “Hey hey hey. Are you okay?” he asked, partially rhetorically.     “Logan… I can't move… I can't, it hurts…” Angel said with a trembling lip. Logan opened his mouth, but his chin just hung there; Alice shook, telling him that she had no more Light.     “Merlin, are there any vehicles nearby?” Logan asked as he looked around.     The ghost gave off several pings and spun around. “Yeah, there's a flatbed truck on the next street over.”     “What's the quickest way to get it here?”     “None. All the roads between here and there are covered with debris…”     The warlock growled lightly. “Logan, don't. Just get--"     “I'm not leaving you!” he yelled. “I'm not losing you a second time,” Logan declared. He ran into a nearby house, then returned moments later with a small cot. He carefully lifted Angel onto it, then began dragging her down streets. “Warn me if any Cabal get close,” he said to Alice and Merlin.     After an hour of tiring effort, Logan got Angel to the truck Merlin had found. He, with the help of the ghosts, got her onto the bed, placed a piece of tin over her to hide her, then jumped into the driver's seat and drove away from the City. Logan opened the cabin window and looked back at Angel, making sure she was okay. He looked back at the road, wiping away sweat and tears, then said to himself, “If only Nick were still here.” CONTINUE TO PART 2
