He gazed at the pod, which now rested on the table. The technician working on it responded without turning his attention away. Werein- Yes. The man nodded in response. Damian- Good. Werein continued to tinker with the wires. Damian- ..... The faint zapping of arc energy rang out as Werein continued to make adjustments. Damian- ........WELL? Werein (looking up)- What? Oh right! Sorry. He closed the latch on the pod's surface and handed it to the man. Damian felt its cold metal as he held it in his palm. Werein (standing up)- You remember what to do, right? Damian weighted the cubic object in his hand. Damian- Of course. It's what I was hired for. The man immediately strode away from the table and made his way for the ladder behind them. His boots clanked on the metal rungs as he made his way to the top. Werein- Damian. He stopped. Damian- .....Yes, Werein? Werein- .....Stay safe. Damian chuckled. Damian- You too.... Damian pulled himself to the top of the ladder and opened the latch above. His echoing steps were lost in the chorus of voices and sounds of the populated streets above. The latch snapped shut with a loud crack. Werein leaned back in his chair and lit a cigarette. Once again, the room was silent. ---------------------- Hayden- Rock, paper, scissors shoot. The Titan held out scissors. The boy looked at him, turning his head. Hayden- .... Nothing? No response. Hayden (sighing)- Okay, we went over this three times already. Rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, and paper beats rock. The object of the game is to– Boy- I'm a kid, not retarded. Dumbass. Hayden- Oh... Okay then. Well then what do you wanna pla– Boy- This is boring. I'm leaving. The kid waved as he walked away. Hayden shook his head. Hayden- Liz, is it just me or are kids just big fleshy lumps of attitude? Liz's voice came back through the comms. Liz- Aren't we all.... Look, we're not here to play with the locals. Hayden looked at the street camera, which blinked its shutters at him. Hayden- I see you're in control of the network. Liz- Yes. Street cameras and electrical grids for about 5 square blocks. If they make a move, I'll be the first to know. Hayden- And I'll be the first to act. If there was one thing Hayden liked about Liz, it was her ability to hack virtually anything. Hayden- Hey, you sure you're up for this? I know you haven't got much time to recover from.... Him.... Liz chuckled light-heartedly, but there was an uneasiness in her voice. Liz- I'm fine, Hayden. Really.... Keeping busy takes it off my mind. Earlier that week, Headmaster Karu had approached them with another assignment: to investigate a tip regarding an underground terrorist network that had recently popped up. Hayden was surprised when Liz suggested they take the job. She took quite a hit from the last mission, Hayden thought to himself. And without much time to recover, it's a wonder she's got the drive to keep going. Liz- Hayden, you there?! The Titan looked up from the ground, shaking his head. The voices and chatter of the people strolling around him grew louder. The Central Square of The Last City was a popular place, but the streets were particularly busy today. Hayden- I hear you. Liz- I'm seeing something on the corner of 8th and 9th on the South block. Security feeds just registered an unauthorized opening to the sewage system. Hayden- It's probably just construction. Liz- The latch opened UP, Hayden. Hayden (scratching his head)- ....Okay? Liz- Meaning someone LEFT the sewers. Hayden immediately stood up. Hayden- Why didn't you just say so... The Titan made his way to the block on the South side of the Square. Upon stepping closer, he noticed a tall, red-haired man climbing out of a hole in the ground. Hayden (waving)- Excuse me, sir? May I have a moment of your time please? Damian- I'm not interested. The man turned and began to walk away. Hayden stepped forward and grabbed him by shoulder. Hayden- That wasn't a reque– Upon looking at the man, Hayden noticed a small metallic object in his left hand, covered in three plates on each side. A green light shone on its surface. Hayden- ....What the heck is that? Damian clicked one of the plates. The green light began to blink red. A loud beeping rang out in the air. Damian- Oh, you know. Just a thing. Damian kicked his foot into the Titan's knee, pushing him to the ground. Hayden grabbed at the man, but he was fast. In a matter of seconds, his red-haired attacker sweeped his leg under the Titan, sending him sprawled onto the ground. Damian turned and ran away down the street. Hayden grunted as he stood up. Hayden- Liz, I found him. Liz yelled back through the comm. Liz- I can see that. Get after him! Hayden charged down the street after Damian, dodging pedestrians left and right. Hayden- Scuse me! Sorry! Pardon me! Scuse me! Up ahead, Damian took a right and ran into a large glass-paned building. Hayden pushed past a group of people and stopped at the entrance. Hayden- Liz, he just made a break for the office building. It's on the corner of 6th Street. Moments later, Liz responded. Liz- I see it. I'm working on interfacing with the cameras.... Hayden ran inside as he listened. The doors opened up to a huge lobby. A set of elevators lay to the right. Liz- Okay, got it. He's heading to the roof. The Titan charged into one of the elevators. Hayden- I'm on my way up.... Is he in position? Liz- Yes... --------------------------- Damian crashed through the door and ran into the fresh, open air atop the building. Damian- Finally.... The man stopped and tinkered with the device in his hand. The red light blinked faster and faster. After turning a dial on the side, a latch opened, revealing a small button inside. His finger moved to press the button when, all of a sudden, a loud crack of thunder rang out around him. Damian looked up and yelled. Damian- Who's there?! After looking ahead, he noticed something strange. He saw the rooftops of other buildings ahead, but there was a blue-colored silhouette in the way. The shape was transparent, but it was still visible. In the blink of an eye, the shape changed from transparent to a solid form. Like magic, a white-cloaked Hunter appeared in front of Damian, now glowing with blue arc energy. Upon looking closely, Damian saw that he was young. Very young. Maybe even in highschool. Damian- Invisibility, huh? Filthy Hunter.... Shouldn't you be in school? Zale- Shouldn't you be in jail? Damian was amused by the boy's backtalk. Damian- Me? Oh no. You see, I've got a job to do..... And I'm not going anywhere until it's done. Zale chuckled. Zale- That's really funny.... Ya see... Lightning cracked around Zale as he pointed his arcblade at Damian. Zale- I was just about to say the same thing.
