I wholeheartedly support legitimate, subtle, and well-thought out balances. I cannot stand nerf herders. Balances keep something just as useful, but allow counter plays and strategies to deal with them, and don't make one thing more or less desirable to use. Nerfs make something less desirable to use, allow too many counter plays, and require strategies simply to use. simply put, they disturb the balance of the game, generally more than the original problem. I'm still trying to resharpen my throwing knives and get the glue back on my tripmines, to little avail, lol.
