I disagree completely.
A lot of the more "casual" players are those of us that have been gaming for decades. We've got jobs and families now, we don't have the time we used to have.
I heard it best on an MMO forum, "I already have a job, I don't want another" when someone asked why they don't play "challenging" games.
The problem some people seem to have is they confuse casual with bad.
The other issue is, hardcore gamers are a huge minority.
You mention money, of course it's about money. Games development is a business and, as with all things business, the aim is to make a profit. It always has been. Nobody works for free.

It's not about getting rid of casual content, it's about providing content for EVERYONE! Having super easy content and super difficult content.
