Here's a summary if you just wanna read what I confirmed through testing. You can ignore the video, but I do my best to keep the videos short.
Also, ya :3 we all know hipfire (general hipfire, not talking about the perk) is bad. Just wanted to point out that it's actually much worse than some ppl think. This is weird coming from Bungie, since Halo used to be all about hipfire. Bungie, if you see this, please buff hipfire <3
First off, ALL WEAPONS lose range when hipfiring, not just shotguns.
Stability and Accuracy aren't your only problems when hipfiring. Range is lost when hipfiring, but indirectly. What?
Aiming rewards a Zoom Multiplier to your Range Stat (which I explain in my previous video), which means you're losing your Range Multiplier when hipfiring. Example: Scout rifles have a 1.7x Multiplier from zoom and shotguns have a 1.2x.
In a nutshell, Aiming Down Sights (ADS) results in less damage penalties over range, even with shotguns. As if we already didn't enjoy hipfire, this cements its place as a liability, in most cases. Obviously if you're in point-blank range, it doesn't matter.
Zoom Multipliers - Scopes add to this zoom, as well as the Custom Optics Perk (which is pretty useful actually)
Shotgun - 1.2x
Auto Rifle, Fusion Rifle, Machine Gun - 1.5x
Hand Cannon, Pulse Rifle - 1.7x
Scout Rifle, Rocket Launcher - 2.0x
Sniper Rifle - 4x
A Fusion Rifle's Range determines the Speed the Fusion Bolts will travel. The Range Multiplier granted from Zoom does not affect this, surprisingly. Fusion rifles, in my opinion, are the best weapons to hipfire right now (in general), despite how much they under-perform in the current Meta. No, I'm not saying Hipfire Fusions are amazing, just that - if you really wanna hipfire, go with Fusion Rifles.
Question: If you see the video, can you leave an opinion on the animation at 1:10 in the video. I just started learning how to animate, and that ONE little 1.5 second animation took me 5 hours to make lol I really wanna get better at this :) just recently upgraded my editing software. Hope you enjoy <3
The Taken King, brought many changes to Range, Aim Assist / Target Acquisition, and Accuracy to help balance weapons (Hand Cannons and Auto Rifles).
Bungie Employee, Jon Weisnewski, confirmed in an interview how these Mechanics truly perform in The Taken King Expansion. All this information can be found in this episode of the Crucible Radio Podcast. Basically, your Range stat contains Damage Drop-off, Accuracy, and Aim Assist. Zoom only seems to affect the Damage Scaling, not Accuracy Aim Assist. My reasoning: The Increased Range on Fusion increase the Travel Speed of the burst. Zoom didn't affect this at all. This means that Zoom strictly affects damage scaling.
So ya, you can be like, "duh, hipfire sucks" but it's a bit more complicated than that :) Hope you learned something!

Useful. Thanks

I've seen it with scouts

Sound like things work as intended. Buff hip fire get real... If your at a shooting range and hip fire a rifle do you think you'll even hit the target at 100 yards? Just saying hip fire is for close range. The vid was cool.
-
I like hip firing Mida after a melee or grenade! But of course hip fire is only really used as a last resort to someone rushing me/getting the jump on me and don't have time to aim so would still benefit me more than trying to aim it. Do people really hip fire long range? Or attempt to

Edited by Cowboybebop: 3/10/2016 6:44:31 AMNice vid! Put this in #competitive if you want less toxic responses. People around here tend to be a little "dumb and hostile" about everything, no matter what it is.
-
Good job. You made a video on what other Destiny YouTubers have already done and said (Datto, for example)
-
The comments here make my eyes bleed. 90% of the people didn't even read the post. Must be hard seeing all the effort you put into your videos be simplified by people saying "hip fire decreases accuracy, no shit" when the video isn't even about that. Anyways, keep up the good work, absolutely love your videos, they are very in depth and triumph even planet destiny in terms of quality improvement.

I didn't know shotguns with rangefinder lost range when hip firing. Huh. Weird.
-
All I have to say is..
The Last Word
-
And in other news... apparently if you shoot people in the head then they die quicker!
-
How do we get kills from miles away with the last word tho?
-
Hipfire is actually pretty good if you use it the right situations and don't have your sensitivity set too high. Doom is coming out soon.
-
Well Lodi da this scientist figured out you lose range when you fire from the hip, honestly I think O.P Is a guaranteed shoe in for this years noble prize award.
-
Wow. Really? I mean REALLY? Thanks captain obvious. Scrubs are taking over the Destiny forums.

Edited by ASC Sentry: 3/10/2016 8:58:28 AMThought this was common sense/knowledge in the fps genre.
-
Does anyone ever hipfire? I don't...
-
Isn't it like that in like every FPS game?
-
Figured this out on the oversoul. Glad someone could prove it with real numbers
-
I agree, nerf fusion rifles
-
Can you try to test what the accuracy boost of hip fire perk is?
-
excellent post, again! you are providing a vital service to the community! Well done, Guardian!
-
your just now figuring this out?

Edited by Khyllo: 3/10/2016 2:35:03 AMVery informative post. Not bias bs like most posts on this forum. just straight to the point research. Thank you

Just one of the many reasons why Destiny can't be competitive.
-
So many lines.

I have also tested this, I understand it is true as well.
