Need Advice: staying relevant w/o DLC

I started playing Destiny last fall on my old roommate's PS, so since we graduated, I haven't had access. I really enjoy Destiny, and I'm poised to buy the whole Taken King edition PS4 console & PS Plus just so I can play Destiny. That's a big investment for a casual gamer, and one question gives me pause: will I only be able to stay relevant if I keep buying DLC? I didn't care to buy DLC on my roommate's console, seeing as I would lose it in a few months, so I forewent Dark Below. I've played games with DLC before, but I've never felt so pressured to buy it as in Destiny. When Dark Below came out, Weekly Nightfalls and Heroics were often DLC, and those who bought it were automatically at an advantage for progression. Destiny has few pvp playlists (I love pvp), and the interesting stuff (eg inferno, soon mayhem, rift) were only available on DLC maps. It was impossible to be quite on an even footing for Iron Banner. VoG teams were harder to come by. The chances of getting things I wanted and could from Xur diminished. I recently got a chance to play for a few hours on a cousin's game, and it became clear that to compete in Iron Banner anymore, I'd need HoW for Prison of Elders to get Etheric Light and the ability to ascend my armor. I don't want to think about what the experience for vanilla Destiny players will be if they can't get tTK when it drops in a week. Basically, if I drop $400+ on this console and game, will I feel irrelevant and left behind when the next couple DLC hit in a few months? I'm getting married, getting a job, running races, keeping up with friends, and I love Destiny, but will I have to keep buying the latest deal and grinding along with dedicated guardians to keep up with the fun? If for some reason I have to leave Destiny for 4 months again, if I get back on in 4 months, will there be 16 hrs of pve between me and being able to play on an even footing in IB or ToO again? This is the one doubt holding me back from pre-ordering right now. Hit ya boy with some advice, friends. Thank you. (btw, anyone else in this situation?)

  • With this type of game leaving for an extended time will definitely leave you behind. With ttk levelling up will be fairly quick it will just be a matter of finding new weapons and armour that will be suitable for you.
