Weapons Tuning from a PvE Perspective (Open Letter to Bungie)

Hi again, Bungie, I'm very disappointed with the announced weapons tuning for 2.0. Although you had the nice graphs and stuff, with the exception of gjallarhorn, everything you've done appears to be tunings to stop the complaints coming from the PvP section of your game. Either way, it doesn't make me want to play the game. I am an avid handgun user in all my games. I was nervous about the last rebalancing but my hand gunskill made me survive. But this one means there is no skill that will overcome what you're doing. The hand cannon ammo only went up as you got higher quality guns and only then did they become a viable weapon. Now, they will no longer. I have been reading the forums for a while now, moderate participation, and I can see that each and every tuning you did is as a result of the complaints. Besides gjallarhorn, these complaints flow from PvP. I was given a snarky reply to a suggestion earlier, stating that Destiny is a PvP game and to want a PvE experience is lame. Perhaps they are right? It appears your developers thinks so. Besides the exclusion to fireteams which they *hope* will be solved by making gjallarhorn less desirable, there was no problem in PvE with weapons at all. To quell the complaints, the PvE players will be needlessly affected, when all they were trying to do was have what fun they could with the limited contend. PvE players weren't crying "why oh why isn't the scout rifle as good as the hand cannon??" I have two friends who love the scout rifle. I love the hand cannon. We are all PvE players. No one had a problem. It is very easy to see why these changes may be disappointing to the PvE player. I truly hope you reconsider this because the gun play is the main reason the PvE players come back and grind this game. Please, please think about this before you arbitrarily change things for one set of players. p.s. I would expect the same treatment for changes to the game for PvE that consequently affected innocent PvP players - you have two separate environments and trying to cater to either one is a problem. This, above all things, will affect the longevity of your game. Sincerely, <3

  • Trying to cater to both at the same time is the problem. Bump though.

  • take a look at this link ... the poster nailed it! They are not thinking about why the usage numbers skewed the way they did. They want us to meet their philosophy, not play the game the way we want.

  • Gjallarhorn has needed a nerf for a long time and should have never been in the game the way it was. No one weapon should ever have 4 times the damage of all of the other weapons in it's class. But the changes to Ice Breaker and Black Hammer have made them both completely not worth using. What they should have done was buffed both of them: Black Hammer's ammo reserve should have been increased to 21 rounds instead of 15 and Ice Breaker's ammo reserve should have been increased to 8 rounds instead of six.

    • Bungie expressed many tkmes before the game came out that pvp and pve will see your gear staying at the same spot. Unfortunately by doing this it has negatively affected many players who only stay on one side of a double edged sword. This was a good idea but in experimentation it proved to be the wrong choice. Please do as communism and learn from your mistakes and through out the garbage that gets innocent people hurt. What I mean to say is that communism works in probability but not in experimentation.

      • The fact that Bungie can't keep PVP and PVE separate sums up just how -blam!-ed up this game is and will continue to be.

      • I don't know why you think hand cannons are gonna suck I mean Thorn might be really good in pve since that is probably the only instance where you might get the dot to stack up to five times like they said. I like hand cannons too, but they did feel over powered since you could one shot so many enemies with head shots without reloading, but scouts or pulses or autos would need to reload after like two or three kills. I really think it won't be that bad plus everyone thinks they just randomly came to these decisions which I whole heartedly disagree with. I bet they have been working on these changes since the last balance and testing out every change. Look at how its not just nerfing damage they understand that they have to be creative with balancing like changing when damage falls off, or mag size, or accuracy when firing fast, to rebalance things. I still give bungie the benefit of the doubt, there is also plenty of time to test it more and maybe make some minor adjustments along the way.
