I got "detained" on Christmas Eve (UPDATED)

One of my rebellious unhandcuffed friends then asked if he was arresting us. When the cop said no, she asked how they had the right to handcuff us. He said he was "detaining" us, and that he didn't need a reason.
When they finally unhandcuffed us and drove away, we realized that was bullshit. They can't detain people for no reason.

UPDATE: I went down to the police station today to request a head shot of every policeman on the force so I could identity the two corrupt officers from Christmas Eve. I was told that definitely wouldn't happen. Then I gave in and just asked for a schedule of all the cops on duty Christmas Eve. I was told no in a much harsher way, and told that I had to leave.
This is definitely a conspiracy, but I don't want to get in over my head. Should I even pursue it?

Never had a bad experience with police, except one time when I was 16 walking around with some alcohol on the way to a party and they took it off me, then told me to be careful and enjoy my night. Cops in my hometown were so cash.

You don't really have anything to pursue here. The cop was right that you can be detained for a brief period of time like that, and the standard for being detained is much lower than for being arrested. It was inconvenient, but it isn't illegal.
