Which publisher would you've wanted for Destiny?
Here are some alternatives (I wanted to include them all in the poll, but you can't have more than seven possible answers):
Electronic Arts
Capcom
Disney Interactive Studios
Warner Bros. Games
Ubisoft
Konami
Sega
Namco Bandai Games
Take-Two Interactive (2K Games / Rockstar Games)
Square Enix
Bethesda Softworks
THQ (back in 2010 it would have been an option)
Atlus
Deep Silver
I would have gone with 2K or Rockstar because
- Bungie already has a history with Take-Two (published the PS2 version of Oni, once owned a part of Bungie, have the rights to Myth and Oni)
- Take-Two is one of the biggest non-ActiUbiEA publishers and they've got a pretty good marketing machinery too (remember the GTA, Bioshock and Max Payne TV ads)
- As you can see in GTA V or Bioshock Infinite they give the developers the time they need (both had a development time of over 5 years)
- with Borderlands they've published a game that's very similar to Destiny
- many of the games they produced are top-notch (GTA, Bioshock, RDR, Max Payne, XCOM, Civilization, Borderlands, ...)
- maybe Bungie could've negotiated that as part of the publishing contract they would have got the Oni and Myth rights back

I would've preferred them to self-publish, but that's rather unrealistic. I'm not surprised they didn't. Looking at the scope of Destiny, it looks like it has taken considerable funding and, despite their previous success, I'm not sure Bungie has a billion dollars lying around. I'm not a fan of either Activision or EA really. MS wouldn't have really worked considering where Bungie are at at the moment. So 2K doesn't sound too bad really.

this really doesn't serve any purpose at all , they ( bungie) went looking for a publisher , and they ( activision ) answered , its contracted and set in stone , so its done and nothing can or will be done at this point . and EA ? really ?!

I think Activision is a good fit. So long as the season pass (if there is one) isn't as expensive as Call of Duty's is.

Why does the publisher matter? I seriously don't know.

Activision is fine as long as they only publish it and have no say in when the game needs to be out and how often dlc and sequels need to come. Plus they can fund destiny very well.

The difference is that Bungie will be retaining the IP rights to anything they create under their contract with Activision. They didn't have that right with Take-Two or Microsuck, and with the advancements made in both hardware & software design since those days, Bungie's best years are ahead of them in terms of the products they can turn out & the stories they can bring to life. This means that, even after they part ways with Activision, they can still crank out another Destiny title if they wish.

I am okay with activision, activision has had its problems but its not outright evil like say... EA... and when it gets its hands on something good it really tries to make it work, as a result they tend to strangle the life out of certain franchises though. But honestly most of those franchises didnt have much going for them in the first place.

Activision is the perfect publisher. They are never going to be in any danger of going bankrupt because they publish a new CoD game every year and on 6 platforms too. Also, Activision has said multiple times that they have given Bungie all the freedom they want. When a CoD game isn't finished, they hire more people to finish it (MW3 was also made with hammerhead studios (I think that was their name)) But Destiny gets delayed instead, because Bungie wants to do it right. A company that has tons of money and let's Bungie do what they want is the perfect company.

I've been saying for the last few years that Take Two is perhaps the biggest un(der)sung publisher in the world.
