So, I had a talk with my dad about politics and religion.

My dad and mom are conservatives both socially and economically. I consider myself socially liberal and fiscally conservative. My parents were both born and raised in the Philippines, where the laws are heavily influenced by religion. When I started talking to my dad about politics and religion, he said he supported Obama during the 2012 election. Surprising, right? You'd think that as a conservative, he'd vote for Romney. The main reason he didn't vote for Romney is because if Romney won the election, he'd get deported back to the Philippines for being an immigrant, even though he's been in America for 30 years. When I asked them about the issue of gay marriage, they told me they didn't want it in the church. When I told my dad that they didn't have to get married in a church, he was pretty accepting about it and mellowed out. Same thing with abortion, when I told him that there are cases where the baby can kill the mother. When I asked him about gun control, he told me that it wouldn't change a thing in California, since we have one of the strictest gun laws in the nation. However, more background checks would be better. I'm inclined to agree with him due to personal experiences in the Philippines, where gun crimes are pretty damn high, and there isn't really any gun control laws in there. There aren't that many laws in there period. Overall, I got a great discussion with my dad, who was pretty mellow seeing as we both have very different views socially. So, I think that talk helped us bond even better. Have you gotten your parents to accept you for who you are? I'm sure that if I was gay and I told my dad about it, he wouldn't care if I was gay or straight, just as long as I don't disrespect him, or something. /blawg
