They use a different engine that is designed for open world games. The only issue is that it is old. Bungie's issue is lack of engine space. Now, with Sony owning Bungie, I dunno if they would ask Zenimax, since they are owned by MS. They could also ask Squenix (FF14), who have a pretty good relationship with Sony. By now, it's probably too little too late. There probably won't be a Destiny 3, since Lightfall is supposed to be the end. On top of that, Bungie has realized that they can take old stuff away, and resale it as dlc.

Bungie developed blam! Under Microsoft, they left and instead of going third party or doing some future proofing they forked blam! In 2008 which became tiger. FYI blam! Was developed in 97... Bungie categorically stated no D3. Net ease bunged them 100 mill for a new ip which wait for it, will use tiger....you couldn't make this up. I quite for a couple of years when they dud the sunsetting. I was very vocally against it and was attacked from all sides. Then it fell apart. The game feels shallow these days. Oh and the current retconning the lore? /facepalm. Bungie will squeeze all they can out if destiny if we are lucky we may have another 5 years or so before it's gone.

I was against sunsetting also. But, Bungie gonna Bungie. They dobwhat they think people want. Dunno if streamers have a sway, but even long time streamers have/are stepping away.
