Instead he completely out of nowhere has the epiphany to simply convert the terrible "final god of pain" into a soothing and invigorating cup of darkness and chamomile tea?
Go back and rewatch that bit of the cutscene. “He said that they were connected by threads he alone could perceive, and that they whispered to him.” It has been mentioned multiple times throughout the season (and could be experienced first hand in the HELM) that feint whispers could be heard from the reliquaries themselves. This suggests that it was Nezarec whispering to Mithrax the information on how to reawaken Osiris.
And then it just inexplicably cures him with no real explanation and apparently zero side effects... This is either just really inconsistent with the lore
Over the past couple of years the devs have been more and more explicit in stating that Darkness powers are intrinsically tied to Memory while the Light is tied to Forgetting. Osiris was stranded within his subconscious after Savathuun was driven out of his body at the end of Season of the Lost, unable to awaken. A strong infusion (tea humor?) of Darkness energy, being tied to memory, perhaps allowed him to find himself again (rewatching the cutscene you can clearly see eddies of dark energy swirling about Osiris’s head as he awakens). So in that sense it would be consistent with the more recently established lore.
or more likely we are going to find out there is some consequence later on but just makes it predictable and kind of hokey/corny, like ohhh who could have seen that coming?!
Storytelling is rife with instances in which protagonists make decisions with potentially dangerous consequences either through being blinded by hubris or, as is often the case, with full knowledge that it will likely come back to hurt them later. Yes, it is predictable. But it is predictable because it is relatable: we make mistakes based on poor judgement, we let pride distort our perceptions and we make admittedly poor decisions despite knowing the likely consequences in order to help others in our own lives. Heroic characters that never make mistakes aren’t particularly believable and are thus not particularly interesting, while those who avoid taking action because of likely future drawbacks to the immediate detriment of their friends aren’t especially heroic. Yes, these are tropes of storytelling, but not necessarily indications of poor storytelling.

I didn’t feel the ending cutscene was strong by any means, and I am not suggesting that you should suddenly decide it was actually fine after all. However I think you should at least reconsider it with the above context as I don’t feel it was quite as dire and out of left field as you suggest.

Your first point really just strengthens my argument. Why would we ever listen to the whispers of nezarec who we know brought the collapse upon us and is a disciple of the witness. Doesn't make sense in the context of pre-established lore. Yea I get darkness is tied to memory and you can say it restored his/Savathun's memories. That's one of the only part that makes any sense. There is also over a decade of lore establishing contact with the darkness in almost any amount is dangerous and highly corrupting. So coming into direct contact with primordial darkness and being healed from it still doesn't make a bit of sense. As well as all the lore this season saying that the reliqaries are cursed and emanating a dangerous force comparable to hazardous radiation. Finally there is a big difference between making mistakes or dealing with setbacks and just obviously poor decision making with absolutely zero justification for why such a risk would even be worth it considering all the evidence suggesting otherwise. It's just bad writing, I know fanboys will always defend Bungie but your just giving them a pass. Most the seasonal narrative have been miles better, this was just not good and every major content creator including those who watch the lore closely like Myelin and BYF have all universally agreed this has probably been the most poorly written season TO DATE. Let's all just be honest they didn't hit the mark...

does the lore mention anything about how much caffiene was in the cup of tea?
