Alternative MM Ideas, Could Time Based MM Work in D2?
I'm not sure if anything specifically happened, or if it's just a byproduct of Iron Banana, but I'm seeing a lot of posts related to CBMM and SBMM on the forums this week... Well, that and a bunch of all-cap belligerent titles demanding that match-making be "fixed" on penalty of death.
I recently made a post about playing with my dad, and I've been putting some thought into what is the most deterministic factor in one's personal abilities. Does there exist some opaque boundary separating the new players from the skilled players? More importantly, how much protection do new players require, and at what point should the training wheels be taken off? How do you protect the new players and dabblers without punishing the existing player base of loyal customers?
What if MM was based on a weighted average of both seasonal and overall PvP play time? This does not look at the individual skill of the player, but rather, just how skilled the player has managed to become over a set amount of time. R6 Siege has a new-comers playlist for players under a certain level, and you aren't allowed into the ranked playlist until you've hit level 50. It's worth noting that this playlist is flooded with smurf accounts grinding their way to the rank requirement, but serves as a concrete attempt at enforcing some form of playtime based protection. Would this happen in D2? Maybe, but people don't really smurf in D2, where light level serves as the barrier for entry on Trials, IB, etc.
Look, I know there are a slew of issues with any matchmaking system. I know that a 62 year old man is not the average D2 player, and we shouldn't tune the PvP experience to his whims. I'm not here to support or tear down SBMM or CBMM. I'm just here to stir the pot and talk while bored at work.
So guardians, what MatchMaking system do you think fits best into the world of Destiny 2?
