Masterworking armour is not useless even with sun setting. You get a whole year with the armour, and if you want to compete in activities, you need mods in them.

Pretty much all of my gear is upgraded to 8. That allows all the room I need for the mods I want and doesn't stop me being far better than idiots with Masterworked gear (I'm not talking about you, I'm on about the people who still don't understand what a Champion mod is, or how to do simple mechanics). In my opinion. If the resources were more abundant, then masterworking would be more viable on a 12 month rotation basis. As it stands, the Masterworked gear I do have is Last Wish, and some Dreambane (because of Pit). The rest of it is garbage to me because I'm not going to waste Shards on capped gear when I have Exotics to Masterwork. If more Masterworked gear dropped from activities i.e. Weekly 100k Pinnacle from Nightfall was a Masterwork, as a counter argument to more resources, then I'd get behind that idea as those peices now have purpose instead of just being infused into your (my) Raid gear.

If you run PoH on a weekly basis, get your 3 ascended shards from the season pass, maybe get 1 or 2 ascended shards from trials or nightfalls, you should have no problem master working your armour, especially for a year of use.

Pit will only drop 1060 masterworks, so they're useless going forward and I've never had a Shard from it, don't even think they drop there. So I'm stuck with Season pass and Nightfalls. Thing is, I have about 3 different sets of gear for different things. Even then have multiple peices of the same gear per set with different mod setups. It's too much effort for me to want to do it for the deminishing returns. So I stay upgraded to 8, then still end up being the best player in most PVE activities because I'm not an idiot. I don't need to masterwork, but I'd like too for the extra stats. I do masterwork my weapons though. That is a must for me. However, my point remains. Sunsetting does kind of ruin the idea of Masterworking gear if you have to keep doing it over and over. Just my opinion.
