I started playing trials in D1, always was trying to put together a solid team to go flawless. Was super pumped that they brought it back in D2, and super grateful for Bungie listening to us. I want this game mode to be successful, but I’m concerned about its future.
Last night I was going in with some new clan mates for their first time in trials. We were getting smoked in the first couple of games by teams who’s combined Elo slotted them at 97% chance to beat us. I’m not amazing at PVP but I’m solid, but definitely not good enough to overcome multiple people multiple Elo brackets above me.
Yes Trials is the pinnacle PVP mode, and yes it needs to be challenging. However there needs to be some level of accessibility, otherwise new players won’t pick it up and the player population for the playlist will die. Through natural attrition those already “pros” at the playlist will stop playing as well and the issue will compound.
What do you all think? I know the response will be “to get good” but how are players going to get good if they’re placed for failure in game 1?

8 commentairesBungie Developers & Programmers should adopt a simple methodology and reality; Less than 1% of players in any sport / activity make/are the pros. Casual players (who are the super majority of gamers) should not have to compete with the “pros”. Hence why Trials is bombing. D2 should be about enjoyment, a few hours away every weekend for most. Like belonging to a Co-ed softball team. Fun but not serious. If you wanna get better then, yes, have a few more practices and with a little luck you make it to the softball playoffs. BUT - a Co-ed softball player / team shouldn’t have to play the New York Yankees for a championship / prize. One is able to designate considerable time to improve and once doesn’t have such time. Create categories of players in PvP. Then consistent matchmaking. & Bungie - pinnacle weapons should be able to be earned in both PvP and PvE. Forcing PvE gamers who don’t want to play PvP (for all the reasons the super majority aren’t playing Trials - hint hint) is counter productive if you’re trying to get more gamers on D2. Letting the PvE player and the PvP player earn the same weapons the way they like to play is smart business. If you give the PvP pros the best weapons which you can only get by having to play PvP (mountaintop, recluse, not forgotten etc) and then make the pros the gatekeepers you sure made the 1% real happy and made the super majority of your customers not satisfied. Doesn’t sound like a good business model. That saves the game - not just Trials. P.S. Give badges or unique shaders or halos or sparrows or ships or whatever as rewards (but not weapons or armor) and make them slightly different for PvP successes verse PvE successes to the top 1% players. The PvE PvP pros will recognize each other, the casual player will recognize a good player and everyone will be happy.

1 commentaireIt's not just trials that's experiencing these problems, I've been matching against pubstompers in 6v6 as well, yes, with upwards of a gold standard ELO.
