I think a lot of older users that complain about the good ole days are just upset they aren't popular anymore and all their friends are gone. And I get that but if the place has changed and the folks you like hanging out with are gone then why stay? It's kinda like hanging out at the old bowling alley like you and your Highschool buddies used to do, but they all moved away years ago and new kids are out there laughing and having fun while you're sitting at the bar alone grimacing at the new paint job.

I feel you may be oversimplifying a bit here. Granted, I’m sure I’m saying this because I’m one of those “older members” you seem to dislike so much. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t feel like this place is even close to the community it once was. And I’m sure I could list a dozen or more reasons why I believe that. But none of those reasons would include fading popularity or long-lost buddies. It’s more nuanced than that. I also cant fault people for wanting to share what they believed made this place great. And perhaps encourage some of it to return. But I do agree that plenty of folks don’t go about this the right way. I just don’t think it should all be lumped together. We’re not all clinging to the ghost of offtopic past just because we’d like to see some elements we enjoyed make a return. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you. Its a shame that some people think that older users prefer the "old days" because they "were more popular" (missing friends I do feel is a genuine reason however). I personally was never what one would call "popular" on the forums, just another no-named user. A "literal who" as they call it now, with some friends in one group who dwindled away before Bnext even was a thing and a few acquaintances from the forums. I know you didn't go into reasons, and I might be preaching to the choir since I'm replying directly to you, but I'd like to go a little in depth of what I think. My biggest gripe other than the nullification of groups would be how the community acts now. I'm not talking about Offtopic specifically, but more so the Destiny forums. Bungie.net I feel has become more of a laughing stock now, what with the endless barrage of hateful messages thrown at Bungie, to streamers, and to people who attempt to have a positive discussion. We refer to them as the salt mines, and with very good reason. Offtopic isn't perfect of course, it has its own fair share of flaws I feel needs to be readjusted some. Users who seem determined to stand out by being shitposters, people who want to circlejerk other users for some reason, that kind of stuff. I've said it before, Offtopic is the combination of the Flood and the Septagon. There's bound to be disagreements between old and new users (Septagon vs. Flood days shows that much!). A song older than this community. But back to the Destiny forums. I simply feel that such an atmosphere of toxicity has stunted this website's community. I'm aware that previous game forums for Halo had their own fair share of toxicity, but I'd be baffled if it was at the level the Destiny forum is at. I mean, its been in a constant state of complaining not even a month after the first Destiny's release! A never-ending barrage of hate that ends up discouraging users away. Who the hell wants to be a part of our community? There's more nuance to that, of course. But I don't think your comment I'm replying to needs to go any further.

  • Honestly I like a bit more of the people this time around. All the old trolls are for the most part gone or just lurking, and a good amount of people are into stuff i'm into as well. Although it's nowhere near as lively as it was years ago, Off-topic never really lost it's niche.

  • I think you completely nailed it. It’s like when you move out, only to come back a year later and see your room has been completely changed. I won’t lie though, I miss certain aspects of the old OffTopic, primarily the activeness. I find that this era tends to have quite a lot of dry spells. Plus there were some pretty strange characters in old OffTopic that shook things up. The most strange character we have is BurlyBaine.

  • I was thinking more about it earlier and another big part of the changes this forum has gone through over the many years is that people change. They burn out or get too busy. Folks can blame the Purge all they want but I remember a lot of folks leaving even before that. Work, family, school, or just losing interest in those silly things they used to post. Theres always been an older group of folks and a newer group and these little fights always pop up. Same Shit Different Day!
