The parties aren't the problem.
The problem is our campaign finance system. I'm 51 years old. So I'm old enough to remember when Government existed to act as a restraint (regulate) upon the power of business....and it actually served the interests (if imperfectly) of the average citizen.
But with Ronald Reagan and is "Revolution" a wave of conservative, anti-government zealotry swept through our politics....and it got married to a "Conservative Movement" of wealthy donors still bitter about the redistribution of wealth created by FDRs New Deal....and expanded by Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society".
So what happened is that politicians....especially on the Right....took a hatchet to government's ability to regulate business.
Then those same polticians put out a shingle and hopped into bed with that same business that they were "deregulating". So it became in the interest of business---in the guies of "campaign contributions" to BUY influence to get the laws and (non) regulatory conditions they wanted.
Then retiring politicans got offered lucrative lobbying jobs when they left public life to go back and lobby the same colleagues they used to work for.
So what has happened is that the FIREWALL that used to seperate Government and Business....broke down ENTIRELY. Our campaign finance system (and the skill with which business developed at HIDING corrupt inducements, and our reduced ability to oversee them) became a system of legalized BRIBERY.
So Government stopped being the WATCHDOG of Business....and got turned into an OBEDIENT LAPDOG. Politicians no longer have to serve the public because of safe districts...ideological news coverage (Fox News) and huge campaign warchest that will allow them to buy their way back into office as they exploit the lack of awareness of an apathetic and anesthetized public. Most people can't be bothered to even show up to vote. Never mind stay ACCURATELY informed.
Then Citizens United made matters worse by GUTTING what few campaign finance laws we had....so now---effectively----our government is up for sale to the highest bidder. Thrown enough MONEY at the problem and billionaires can basically BUY the government they want.

TLDR:
The parties aren't the problem. The problem is our polarized, tribalized politics. Such that our votes are identity based and not POLICY based.
...and the fact that our system is AWASH in the corrupting influence of private money.
Where I work...I cannot so much as take a PENCIL as a gift from a sales rep because the science shows that even gifts that small are corruptting. YET WE NOT ONLY ALLOW---WE ACTUALLY **DEFEND**----SPECIAL INTERESTS SHOVELLING MONEY AT OUR POLITICIANS TO THE TUNE OF HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.
Then have to the nerve to look SURPRISED that it corrupts them.
WTF did we EXPECT?
We have the government we deserve......
The formation of parties is natural and inevitable. If you ban parties people will just do back room deals and create voting blocs and alliances - you vote for my legislation and I’ll vote for yours. Unofficial parties will form amongst like minded politicians in order to get legislation through - that’s just human nature.
What probably needs to happen is a move away from the traditional two party system to a more diversified multi-party system. The current system doesn’t allow smaller parties to compete.
We dont need to restart them.
No parties, just people. Make voters actually listen and read up on what these folks are saying and not what letter is next to their name.
Don’t worry, give me a couple years to finish creating my army of super-human warriors in a lab beneath the Himalayas and you won’t have to worry about political parties any more, I’ll lead humanity into a glorious golden age!
then at the height of my power my favourite son and half of his brothers will betray me leading to galaxy spanning civil war that’ll conclude with terra being ravaged, my favourite son dead, and me stuck on a glorified golden chair watching politicians ruin everything I built
