All shotgunners out there are probably rapidly clicking on the dislike down arrow as soon as they seen the title. However I'm still going to explain why.
So in objective base modes like Control and Rift, snipers are actually the most useful players to have your team. Okay cool, some shotgunner sweeps through three or four opponents. However any special weapon can do that. However Snipers can do the same thing but at a much longer distance. Why is this more useful? well if everyone is playing the objective then shotgunners, or what ever special weapon you are maining, are taking people out on the objective zone/area. Snipers can do the same at a distance to allow shotgunners on your team to clean up any stragglers.
This is when snipers come into their own... they are able to keep the opposing team from getting to the objective zone by cornering them in their own spawn zone. They don't have to spawn camp, just hold them off and give them a couple of problems before they can focus on the objective.
Allow me to give you an example how I carry this out. So I was playing Rift on Black Shield, the enemy usually on have three possible routes to go to get the spark depending on your team spawn. Two of these three lead to the outside spark spawn. These two can be easily held if you and a teammate, or two, have some degree in competency. The third is a bottle neck through the building to the spark spawn. Again inside camping their door will allow you to control enemy flow to the spark spawn. I managed to rack up a juicy 35 kills that game with a few rage quits whilst using the NLB and Sidearm.
Now some of you are probably going to comment some butt hurt comment about spawn camping and spawn killing. Well this isn't spawn killing/camping. This is actually clever management of enemy numbers. You also have every chance of killing the player who is doing this to your team. This means that less players are able to get to the spark. Therefore players at the spark are able to capture and deliver the spark with the least amount of resistance as possible. This is also achieved the easiest by using a sniper rifle.
I'm also waiting for people to comment, I should be able to take out roaming supers with one shot. Well I'm afraid you can't. This is how it is now. You could always like... you know... team shoot roaming supers. You do have teammates you know. I remember the old days when Sunbreakers were like, "uh team shoot us and we die pretty quick" but I digress.
To sum up, snipers are still the most logical choice for objective base gamemodes because you can snipe at objective zones and then cull back the enemy players to prevent the whole team from getting to the objective zone. Also killing them quickly from their spawn means that they can't build up their super as fast and teamwipe you with fiery Thor's or dark Sith lords.
Edit 1:
So a couple of commentors have said for me to check out the statistics between shotgunners and sniper rifle kills. From what I can tell, the average of kills subclass makes actually hasn't changed in months. Shotguns sit around 18% of Crucible kills, Snipers around 10%, fusion rifles around 3.5% and sidearms around 1%. Anyway a lot of people reading this post seem to have the wrong end of the stick. I'm saying that snipers are a lot better at pegging the enemy team and managing enemy numbers than shotguns can. Granted a shotgunner can slide up into the enemies business and get a couple of kills for some points. This is great for game modes like Clash and Skirmish. However this is rarely effective in Control or Rift where you have to hold an area/zone.
Interesting to note, Sniper and Shotgun kills are closely intertwined. Both seem to increase and decrease in kill percentages at the same time. When they increase, fusion rifle and sidearm kills go down. When they decrease, fusion rifle and sidearm kills go up.

Not saying that snipers can't do what you say. I will say that most of don't actually DO it. And - I am doing the same with a scout and a shotgun. The shotgun practice of rushing into enemies will net you a few kills - this is true. I mostly use my shotgun defensively, to stop people rushing in for a kill or a capture in closequarter environments. Sidenote - as long as you are talking about blocking the enemy in a small confined space (their spawn) - it kind of is spawn trapping.

3 commentaires3 good shotgunners will always beat 3 good snipers. This statement applies now more than it ever did. Challenging a sniper lane with a fast firing pulse or a high ranging hand cannon makes it almost certain you won't get headshot. The nerf on snipers were hard, sniping will still be effective but in a competitive environment, they can easily be outplayed now that the bullshit factor of being headshot while shooting the sniper has been removed.
-
2 commentairesThat's fine and all but...I don't like sniping. I like CqC so by default it's autorifles/shotguns.
-
2 commentairesMy Omolon Tuonela does brilliantly against snipers now, and this was never a meta weapon. If this can wreak havoc against a competent sniper, snipers clearly don't dominate. I was playing a private match and even without HCR I caused so much flinch the person I was playing with spent the entire match complaining about what I was using.
-
6vs6 is currently completely dominated by shotguns due to the sniper overnerf 3vs3 snipers are still useable
-
9 commentairesCamping with a sniper doesn't help with objective modes... getting in there and taking the objective helps. If you want to snipe then run in and help capture the point, fine. Sitting in a corner protecting your KD (which is a worthless stat thanks to lag/latency and the joke they call SBMM) is the way of the scrub. 21 kills... 7 deaths... 0 captures = scrub Plain and simple.

Every weapon has its good and bad parts, you can lock down parts of a map with a good sniper, but you will always need someone to cover your flank. You can quickly sweep a corner and blast someone with a shotgun and end a fight quickly, but missing your shot will cost you dearly. With fusions you can quickly end a mid range engagement provided you can get the drop on someone. Sidearms are a good go to option for primary weapons that need distance.
-
Actually shotguns are dominant.
-
Sorry bro snipers are no longer dominant. Challenge those pussies and win with your primary. Every time
-
Boy you're living in LaLa land. Stop sniffing those premium sharpie markers.
-
2 commentairesSo basically you are puffing out your chest about something that is commonly done in every damn Rift game I've played. FYI, you can do what you're doing without a sniper too... same concept. Most people are as smart as you, if not smarter. So, to sum up... who gives a feck.
-
Snipers will always be dominant Snipers will always be domine ant Snipers ill always bedroom ant Snipe her ill always bedroom ant
-
2 commentairesGo to guardian.gg and look up weapon usage for each game variant. Snipers are only dominant in 3v3s or 2v2s. Get the facts straight.
-
10 commentairesSnipers weren't dominant before the nerf. If you viewed any competitive gameplay before the nerf it was primarily shotguns. If you actually looked at the numbers you would realize that shotguns outused snipers in literally every gamemode except trials. Snipers are still good and a good sniper can still own a bunch of casual shotgunners. But, in higher level play, shotguns were and still are dominant.
-
1 commentaireThe statement is false. In year 1 shotguns completely dominated
-
1 commentaireThere are so many variables your not taking into account. -map design (most favor shot guns) -movement speed (which basically increases range of shot guns) -slide/shade step/t garrison/blink/warlock melee (again increases range of shot guns) -there is no cqc primaries to effectively counter shot guns (hand cannons are useless atm) -technically speaking, effective sniper usage requires a lot more skill than effective shotgun usage Shot guns have always been dominant. They have more kills in literally EVERY playlist that isn't trials and always have even through all of the nerfs.
-
1 commentaireWith the increased flinch on snipers, it's way easier to kill snipers now, at least the mediocre ones. Good sniper run after you get shots on them
-
1 commentaireSo assuming no one on the other team is remotely competent enough to kill a sniper by any means, yes snipers are the best weapon choice. Brilliant.
-
1 commentaireGreat work man. You just helped everyone to be better at hard scoping. You're a real hero to the people. Pointless post.
-
I agree, unless they were nerfed to no longer one shot kill with a headshot.
-
2 commentairesShotguns are and will always be better in Destiny
-
1 commentaireSo...
nerf fusions
-
Sniper crutch

Unfortunately when you weigh up the strength and weaknesses of the individual special weapons snipers will always prove to be more powerful. Whereas others are literally useless at certain ranges snipers... arent. Its an unfortunate situation they find themselves in and one that shows how the current system of primary/special/heavy simply doesnt work that well in a pvp enviroment.
