The Cycle of Manipulation Continues: 320 drop rates in the IB and SRL

Tin foil hat? Check. Statistics manual? Check. In about 175 Iron Banner matches, I didn’t see a single 320 item drop for anybody – that’s about 1,050 opportunities for rewards. Out of 217 races in the SRL, I received one 320 helmet and one 320 Mark. I saw ten 320 items drop for other racers. While the difference between a drop rate of 0.0 (0%) and a drop rate of 0.009 (rounded up to 1%) may seem insignificant, IT’S NOT! In fact, the difference is highly statistically significant (z-test of population proportions: z = -3.93, P < 0.01). SO, despite your perception that the difference doesn’t matter, the statistical test tells you otherwise. The difference is [u]real[/u]: the drop rate of 320 items is [b]MUCH[/b] higher in the SRL than in the Iron Banner. Bungie, by making 320 drops exceedingly rare in the Iron Banner, you are making the SRL a near-necessity for achieving max-light, thus increasing the on-paper “popularity” of the SRL. This popularity, I’m sure, is gleefully reported to the Board, and possibly to shareholders, to argue that the game is alive and well, and that there is still money to be made in alternative game modes (so long as they offer greater chances at high-level rewards). But, the popularity of the SRL is largely a reflection of you manipulating the Community, yet again, to play your way, rather than a reflection of the Community's enjoyment of the content. A choice based on necessity isn’t much of a choice. Easy fix: increase the drop-rate of 320 gear in the Iron Banner (and Raids; anybody have Raid drop rates?) AND make the reward for reaching IB Rank 5 a guaranteed 320. While many of us really enjoyed the SRL and will continue to participate regardless of whether we can get 320 gear elsewhere, I’d say an equal number of people hated it, but raced it for the possibility of max-level rewards. You can improve both the quality of SRL racing and the [u]health of the Community [/u]by increasing 320 drop rates in the Iron Banner. Both of these things should be important to you. Many of us who still enjoy this game, are enjoying it less-so with each week, and each let-down. Be very careful about yanking us around too much more. My Day 1 buddies that I run with are talking more and more of other games. (I made the mistake of playing Star Wars: Battlefront and Fallout 4, and [i]holy shit Bungie[/i], you'd better be taking notes for Destiny 2!) So, stop trying to be so sneaky, Bungie. Despite the cacophony of trolls, we players are not blind sheep. Edit: Thing is, it's not like I'm asking for manna to rain from Heaven. Shit. The 320 drop rate for SRL was 1%. [b]ONE PERCENT!!! [/b]And yet it seemed miraculous to us! Asking for a guaranteed 320 at Rank 5 and that the 320 drop rate for the IB be increased to 1% is not exactly asking for a free handout (as some have suggested). Those of you who know me know I loathe the mentality of the participation generation.

  • Agreed. I'm not seeing any significant drops and every legendary I earn are less than 285 gauntlets or a 310 ghost after action on IB. I was surprised to pick up 1 Colovance's Duty (however at 282). I enjoy IB but please let's not give the higher rating armor/weapons with insane rolls to players that contribute next to none during gameplay. It's a competitive gametype. It should be treated as such.

    • I just don't understand why the think being generous with the 320 gear could possibly hurt the player numbers. People didn't just stop when they hit 30, or 32,34 or 40 - cause the gunplay is awesome and even the pvp for all its shortcomings is pretty damn cool. What does hurt is turning on a video game that you love and feeling disappointment week after week. I know 320 won't make any bloody difference to my dps from my 3 toons at 319. But I'd still like to tick that box. I'd like to max out my exotic faction class items, have a different 320 ghost for each day of the week. Have all my guns at max light so I actually could use anything I like for anything in the game. I think Rng is a good idea for a game like destiny - but I think the triple rng (drop, light level, stats) we are subjected to now is shameless manipulation of a loyal and dedicated player base.

            • Praise the Lord - no seriously though, this is what I'm talking about. I just sat in the SRL races just to try and get loot. Yeah that was me spinning around at the start doing -blam!- all. 3 x 320 helms and 1 x 320 class item. It was -blam!-ing glorious. This IB - all 3 toons to rank 5 and highest frigging item were some 320 IB Boots. I felt blessed nether the less, but cheated at the same time. A 312 side arm and a 313 sniper with shocking rolls for my other two packages? Bitch Please....

            • I played iron banner for 10 - 15 matches on only the day before reset, saw a 320 ghost drop. From my perspective the 320 drop rate was very high

              • I'm one of the ones who hated SRL. Hated it so much I couldn't even bring myself to grind it. I do however love IB. Have played it since Y1 when it was a REAL grind but played it anyway since I enjoyed it. Loot was just a bonus (if I could afford to buy it). I am aggrieved that IB can't seem to give me the same progress that SRL could (November IB notwithstanding - that was cool!). As mentioned IB is meant to be the PvP equivalent of the raid (in terms of progression) and yet the chances for 320 drops seem remote if not impossible. It feels like I'm being punished for not playing SRL and not liking the KF raid. Loved Crota and VoG but KF sucks.

              • For me, 220 races of crappy SRL netted me 2 320 helmets, several helmets ranging from 316-319 and 1 317 warlock bond. Hard mode raid EVERY week since release, never got a helmet higher than 314, never got a class item higher than 316, and can't get a ghost higher than 319. Last week I finally received the titan harrowed helmet at 313 and an iron banner ghost at 319. Seems like the raid isn't the best way to get to 320 when I can play SRL and IB (and be bored out of my mind) events to get stuff I haven't received in months. Thanks to SRL, every helmet I use on all 3 characters are at least 317-319

              • Why do you need to be level cap? Seriously? 1. This isn't year one. There is not a 25% incease in your ability to sustain and deal damage between someone who is light 310 and light 320. In fact, pretty much the only difference between someone who is light 315 and light 320 is an ego-based one. 2. The focus exclusive on vertical power gains is slowly poisoning this community. IN games like this there are also HORIZONTAL power gains. 3. If you're participating in parts of the game that you HATE, solely for the CHANCE of getting a particular reward....you've missed the point. 4. No one is yanking you around. Trying to force RANDOM rewards out of the game by sheer force of will and grinding? That's what's jerking you around. Frankly, I'm a daily player and have NO burning desire to reach level cap. For the simple reason that NO tangible in-game benefit comes from doing so. Unlike Year One, where being level 30 made every part of the game significantly easier. As a result, I'm not making myself crazy trying to force rare items from the game by endless grinding. Instead, I'm content to see all my characters in the 310-315 range. I only play those parts of the game that I enjoy... So I'm not at-risk of grnding my way to burnout.

                  I left for vacation on the last Saturday of SRL. When I left I was literally 10 races or less away from hitting Rank 5 and that's just on my Warlock. Came close to Rank 3 on both my Hunter and Titan. I completed the book and completed the SRL quest line on all 3 characters for sparrow rolls. Point is I played A LOT of SRL. I have the book, I forget how many races I did but I know for sure it was over 200, maybe in the 250+ range. Even though it was only 2 tracks, I enjoy arcade racers enough and the rewards were good enough that I played the hell out of it. I got 3 helmets at 320 and I got multiple class item and helmet drops at or well above 310+ and 315+. I got enough that I was able to upgrade ALL of my helmets for ALL 3 characters above 300 as well as their class items. I STILL have some left over sitting in my vault so that during this last IB I was able to take that 280 helmet for my Hunter I had to buy and jack it right up to well over 300. The IB before this one that we just had, I got good rewards to drop. This time, even playing post Rank 5 on each character, I got jack and shit for rewards. Not worth my time. IB is starting to slide down my list of things to do in Destiny and hopefully it won't get crossed off altogether like Nightfall has. Now that I have a complete set of IB gear for each character, not sure how much I'll play IB anymore. SRL is where it's at IMO. I felt more rewarded, I enjoyed it more and it felt like there were less cheaters. Of course, knowing that the rewards were good, I'm sure Bungie will nerf the SRL rewards and shit all over it.

                        I have come to accept my personal theory that Bungie is pacing the level cap to keep people interested in existing content, instead of getting pushed to create new content. The raid challenges are a perfect example. One challenge per week, guaranteed 320 armor or weapon. Just keeps you chasing that dream. VoG was, in many respects, every bit as bad. I remember I didn't see a level 30 until early November. I personally didn't hit 30 until a week before TDB. I hit 32 within three weeks of TDB and 34 the weekend HoW dropped. With Taken King, I am sitting at 317-318 with 4-5 times the raid completions in the past. The RNG light system is bogus and artificially stunts growth in place of pushing Bungie to create new content. Now, with regard to SRL and Iron Banner, you have to factor in that Iron Banner matches (in my experience) take 10-14 minutes. That's 2.5 to 3.5 sparrow races. If the the drop rate was 1% (hypothetically) for SRL, Iron Banner would need to be at 2.5-3.5% for it to match. The purpose of IB, Trials, King's Fall and Nightfall is to push players toward the level cap. When the loot system doesn't reflect that concept, the game feels like a bust, so I get it. Bungie needs to wholesale rework the loot system, but that would also put greater focus on the need for new content, which I think they are less interested in. I mean, consider that the Reef, Dreadnaught and the Lighthouse were all featured in the promotional videos for Destiny, I can only assume they are polishing up Old Chicago for release. I guess what I am really building up to is: BUMP.

                        • I got a 318 scout rifle. I'm guessing because I got 3 primary weapons from the oryx CM. RNG has a way of giving you what you already have. I guess I'm supposed to feel lucky, but no matter what loot drops or what level I reach, my guardians still feel weak. Continually grinding for the same stuff is killing my experience. I remember when everybody was freaking out about 2.0 being announced. It is so much worse than we thought. I broke out the old weapons in a VOG run the other week. A smile was impossible to hold back, and it hit me, this game was so much better in year one. I enjoyed collecting all year 1 had to offer. Now I have the hung jury, Zalo, ToM,1000 yard stare, black spindle and a raid MG. That's as good as it gets. Infusion is almost as awesome as double RNG, making 90% of the loot completely useless. [b]How in the hell is this more variety? [/b] I kinda derailed a bit there, but I guess I'm more disappointed with the ttk as a whole, than I am surprised another event ended up being a disappointment.

                          • This man knows what the word perspective means. In before the player inspectors--- I infuse boosted (planned ahead) a bunch of SRL crap into Lord Saladbowl's store bought helmet to get my 320 folks. It started at 280.

                            • I agree the drop rate was abysmal .... App 60 matches after achieving level 5 on all my characters....Not a single drop over level 302. Only a ghost and a helmet on my Titan. The rewards table was either blank, a couple of blue engrams or motes of light. Considering how lagged out the whole experience was, I doubt I'll bother next time round.

                                  • I don't think giving a random 320 for reaching level 5, even doing it with 3 characters every two months, hurts progression in the game. They could be weapons or armor with bad perks or that you don't typically use but could help you progress other gear and weapons that you want to level up. If you are low level, it isn't like this will help turn anything you have to 320. Just relax and give people something to shot for.

                                      Pretty sure Game Developers have always tried to manipulate their customers behind the scenes. Bungie just does it unapologetically and obviously - they want money so bad they'll blatantly beg for it. It tells me they don't think very highly of any of us, which in turn, makes me turn everyone who listens to me away from Bungie as a company. Destiny was great. Could have been much better.... Bungie though...is horrible. It's not worth buying the game to deal with them.

                                          To which IB do your stats apply? November or January? Nov IB had a high drop rate of everything...and I did get a 320 ghost at rank 5...and Nov IB had the normal forum a$$hats giddy with the stuff they got. From the posts I read in Nov, light level was a secondary thought compared with the TON of stuff that dropped. (like the first week of SRL). I think just increasing drop rates for the gear itself would be beneficial, granted my highest character is 310 and anything over 300 is good for me. Increasing the drop rates overall for the featured gear (ToO, IB, SRL) would at least allow someone to get a weapon/armour pc they enjoy and increase the chance for multiple drops for their preferred rolls. If I like a weapon/armour pc I'll infuse it up so it is viable. [spoiler]I got 1 usable chest piece this IB and a helmet I liked so I infused it up with SRL helmets[/spoiler]

                                          • I saw a 320 class item drop in my second ib game but that doesn't really mean anything with rng. Random is still random even if somebody says a drop rate has been increased. I got a 320 helmet on my 5th day of srl but many didn't get anything over 300 or see any drops at 320. Im not sure where I am going with this Haha. I usually make some sort of statement against what you have said but I have nothing. Did you know Planetside 2 is out on PS4 now? They haven't really advertised it at all. Its free and although the graphics look a bit old the gameplay is apparently really good.
