So bungie always wants to stress the competition side of trials so here is a great idea...
For the next trials i.e. Rise of Iron dlc
It should be setup in a tier system for instance 7 separate tiers.
Once you go flawless one time on your account you hit tier 1 and all your future games are against tier 1. When you hit flawless again you go tier 2 and play only fireteams with a tier 2 player. This would go all the way to 7 tiers you know cause bungie loves 7!
Imagine watching the fireteams battle out in tier 7. This also helps the masses with having a legitimate chance of actually reaching the lighthouse with their friends without having to hope for carry from a raffle.
I forgot to add an important point someone pointed out, yes this would reset with every weekly reset just as everything else does ;)
Another note worthy idea to stop the carries from happening with people manipulating the system would be that the fireteam has to have the same card i.e. Same amount of wins and boons applied
I'd also like to add that this could actually solve the SBMM issue too by going to connection based because the tier systems is already taking the SBMM into account

There are already enough issues finding a decent connection and separating the player base would only make it worse. I would recommend two tiers separated by those who have gone flawless at least once, and those who have not. All players would start in the "Entry Tier". Once you've gone flawless you may only play in the "Flawless Tier" from then on. Similarly, entry level players may only play in the "Entry Tier" until they've gone flawless once. I believe this system would help to improve Trials in the following ways. 1. This would help prevent top tier players from carrying lower level players to their first flawless victory, instead encouraging players to form their own teams in which they could contribute toward their success and feel some degree of accomplishment rather than sitting back and watching their teammates carry them to victory. 2. Over time it would presumably become easier to reach your first flawless victory as the higher skilled players become relegated to the "Flawless Tier" player pool. Thus it feels more achievable than the current system, and hopefully gets more people playing Trials since many lower to mid tier players don't currently bother since the task seems insurmountable. This in turn means a wider range of skill levels across all players and hopefully more fun for all. 3. It would allow for players to reach the lighthouse only once before being placed in the "Flawless Tier". Personally, I've given up on ToO because elimination isn't a game mode I particularly enjoy given the relatively slow pace compared to other game modes, and I have no interest in being carried to the lighthouse. However, if given the opportunity to play against others closer to my own skill level, I wouldn't mind seeing the lighthouse at least once, and would guess there are others in the same boat.
