Luke Smith destroys his own MtG analogy with weapon re-issuing.

Now, I've never played Magic but I do sometimes play the Pokemon TCG for fun, and I believe the formats work the same. TCGs rotate out cards every year, which brings in new cards from new sets and rotates out the older sets. This lets them make new cards without having to worry about op combos with older cards (Shiftry and Forest of Giant Plants lol). The "weapons as a deck of cards analogy" falls apart at even this basic level however. I'm not comboing (if that's a word) my weapons with each other. My Astral Horizon isn't giving a damage boost to my Gnawing Hunger. My Spare Rations isn't giving my Apostate infinite ammo. Weapons exist as they're own separate... entities, if that makes sense. Some of these new perks do work kind of like that (namely Sympathetic Arsenal) but it's not really the same thing. And now on to the re-issuing. TCGs periodically re-release old cards, whether as a legacy set or as a part of a new set. However, ANY OLD VERSIONS OF THOSE CARDS ARE STILL USABLE. My Professor's Letter from 8 years ago is still usable in the Standard Format. There are some cards from 20+ years ago that could be used again if new versions of them were released. Destiny fails miserably at this. My new Night Watch with Rapid Hit and Explosive Payload is exactly the same as my old Night Watch with the EXACT SAME ROLL. The only difference is a fancy sticker and an arbitrary power number dictating how long you get to use it. And to add insult to injury, these "new" weapons have the same perk pool as the old ones, not even a refreshed perk pool. The old weapons NEED to be infusable into the new ones. TLDR: The MtG analogy doesn't work based on Bungie's recent actions.

Well yea thats how archetypes work in any loot game.. I mean Borderlands 3 has 138 legendary weapons. Just 138, all different. Now. How many unique weapons can they make after that without breaking the game, without reskinning, or reusing old ideas. Thats where new perks come in, because eventually you cant make new shiny weapons in a loot based game, no matter how you try. Game Devs have to go through a process of balancing weapons into the sandbox at hand. Right now exotics remain at the top list of special and unique weapons. If put in a legendary weapon into a sandbox you need to make sure it fits with every other legendary weapon, such as archetype, range, etc. Most legendary weapons are obtained from common activities, outside of raids these weapons are nothing special. Some select weapons are powerful as exotics but with drawbacks to its archetype to make it remain legendary. Such as Luna’s Howl or Revoker, great weapons but fall short to certain circumstances that most exotics will always beat. Make legendaries isnt a matter of reskins, its a game of numbers and creativity. Borderlands also has rarity which just boost stats. Destiny does perks. Divison also follows the boosting stats thing per rarity. Destiny does masterworking/mods, which make builds very unique if you pair them well.
