I've been so depressed lately

I moved in the summer and where I live has barely over three thousand people and I hate it with a passion, my school is my least favourite place on earth, every night I get like an hour of homework, all my teachers are terrible. I'm really starting to hate life more and more every day.

I'm not a fan of the 1-up approach, so don't mistake this for that: I moved out of a place like yours to a bigger city. I don't really have any friends local to here other than people at work (whom I don't hang out with because they're work friends). I'm working this job running one department, as well as going to school. Basically, I wake up, do school, go to work, come home, do more school, and occasionally I will set some time aside for free time. That said, my job sometimes really interferes with that process and I end up working more than I anticipate. This week I didn't get one day off, but still had to stay on top of school. So that small window of free time I set aside was gone. Despite that, I still try and find enjoyment in things (for instance, this week I played some good music while I did homework and allowed myself to just sit there for a moment and enjoy it. It was very small, but it allowed me to recover and get back to work). Even if I had friends to hang out with, I wouldn't have time for it, so I make the best of things with what I have. If you had told me my life would be like this when I was your age, I wouldn't have believed you. I had a set plan in place that ended up falling apart, but despite that more good things have come of it than I would have thought. For instance, in this old town of mine, I couldn't find a job. I also wanted to move out. But it wasn't until everything crashed that I was given the opportunity to leave as well as finding a decent job. That job ended up being terrible, and I quit. That kind of set me into a panic, but as a result I tried twice as hard to find a better job, and I did. So those goals I'd set earlier that appeared to have failed, actually ended up happening without me really realizing it. Things seem to work out once you're on the brink sometimes. In essence, things get tough, and we aren't always able to completely cope with what happens, but we pull through if we choose to do so. You'll be a stronger person for every experience and mistake you make. Reassess what you have, what you hope to do someday, and look forward to it. I'd be lying if I said I was completely happy with my situation, but I find things to keep me going. I think everyone's like that to an extent. Find something worth waking up for, it doesn't have to be some astronomical goal, just do what you like to do normally and don't forget about what's important.

You need to go out and meet people, especially at school. Join a club or get a job. You need something to concentrate on. Trust me, I was in the same boat as you and I did the opposite of what I'm saying now. Ah, you're in middle school. When you get into high school everything will change. And things will change again in college.

Being from a small town, hating school, and having at least an hour of homework a day describes a huge portion of the population. Are you really depressed because of those things, or because you miss the place where you used to live and feel like it was better compared to where you are now?

      • I lived in a farming town with a population of no more than 800 people. In fact I still do. If I dwelled on the fact that I was surrounded by asshats on almost every approach, I would have probably offed myself a while back. Instead I go about my business, in my quiet corner of space of peace and quiet, and enjoy myself. However, I am for the most part an introvert. This may not work so well when you're social and the only new topic to talk about in the morning with anybody in town is, "How funny that x type of animal looked when you ran it over with x type of vehicle."

          • First of all, it's middle school. I'm a senior in college and I have to do a 15 page research paper plus a shit load of work in my other four classes. I have no friends or social life on campus, eat alone, I'm miserable, no females have ever even interacted with me for as long as I can remember, haven't kissed a girl in two years, don't even know the last time I've been on a date, never get laid, 22 and only made it to first base and I'm out of college in two months. I was sick today with IBS because of some awful dining hall food I ate last night, it's snowing again here and cold as balls, and you're complaining about an hour of homework?
