Note: While trace rifles (except for Divinity, which is perfect imo) could all use a general buff, this post is more PvP-oriented. This is also part of my little "series" of posts where I try to make suggestions for greater weapon diversity.
I've already made several posts about this topic before, and while this issue isn't exactly pressing or anything, I feel like it's important to give trace rifles (and a lot of other weapons) some love for once.
Reason being that they are outclassed by primaries for three main reasons:
1. They require maintaining a line of sight and amazing tracking to reach their optimal TTKs, which can be incredibly difficult to do since not only can hand cannon and pulse rifle users easily hide behind cover and peek their shots but there will also be a lot of flinch to deal with.
2. They lack all the things that make auto rifles and pulse rifles easy to use: consistency and forgiveness.
3. They have very little special ammunition that they chew through very quickly at 1000 RPM, which with how difficult it can be to track with them, makes them extremely unforgiving.
However, they are also greatly outclassed by fusion rifles - comparing trace rifles to other special weapons wouldn't be fair, in my opinion - when it comes to TTK, despite being special weapons themselves.
If you couldn't tell already, I already have a few ideas that I put in the poll, but my ideas aren't perfect, so if you have any other ideas that might work, or if you want to explain why any of my ideas wouldn't work, feel free to make a discussion about it.
Edit: Also, mods. These guns desperately need mods.

4 RepliesEdited by hate n payne: 5/4/2021 11:32:39 AMIf Trace Rifles got buffed in damage, they are going to be more broken than 600 ARs and 120s combined. We just need more ammo per brick.
-
Or just have them take primary ammo. They're essentially auto rifles.
-
1 ReplyMods. That's all I want.
-
1 ReplyLiterally just give them an ammo scav mod, it’s been 3 years holy shit bungie. They’re completely usable and actually good in crucible but they don’t get enough ammo per special brick
-
2 RepliesDon’t normally have those issues with most. Prometheus and Wavesplitter are both pretty consistent for me. Coldheart could use a little bit of work on the visual effects when you damage a target obscuring your vision. They really just need an ammo boost and maybe a slight damage increase. They may deal roughly the same damage as a primary, but if they’re using a primary and you hit your shots you can easily outgun them. Used wavesplitter in IB last time and saw decent success with it. In PvE the damage is much more noticeable, but even there an ammo reserve capacity increase would go a long way into making these more viable.

1 ReplyYou and Bungie appear to have different goals. Bungie strives for weapon UN-balance. They've mentioned this several times over years going back to D1. That is why we see a meta each season (or 2), and then it changes to something else. For this season (and going back to beginning of Stasis), they wanted to highlight new things - perks, abilities, subclass abilities, etc..., but then a weapon that we didn't see a need for adjustment gets adjusted. They search for weapon combinations that do not get used, and then change the characteristics depending on how they want it used. This is for either PvE and/or PvP. PvE is a lot easier - they can just change the seasonal artifact, and then they've tapped into weapons (be it abilities or guns) that perhaps were underutilized previously. You know - the ones you deleted all last season, but because players here will you dismantle what you don't use, you've let go a perfect combination that was useless last week, but next week it will be the most efficient new combination. Don't worry, you can get those out of collec... no wait, sorry. Just keep playing until RNG grants the same stats and the same perks on the same gun. How long could it possibly take? Anyway - so if you're after weapon diversity, although I applaud your effort, amd would love to see the results - it appears as though you're at odds with what Bungie liked to call "weapon seasons" a couple years before seasons in D2 existed. Good luck!

5 RepliesEdited by The White Rabbit: 5/2/2021 10:41:13 PMHere’s my idea: switch places with linear fusions and make them heavy. Make the beam a solid, blazing, cutting laser that slices minor enemies in two with a mere pass! That’s how I always imagined what a consistent beam laser weapon would do. Edit: yes I do want to say ‘IMMA FIRIN’ MUH LAZOR’
-
Be careful what you ask for 👀
-
need some legendaries too
-
Plus I want mods for them.
-
YEP and while your at it add some TRACE RIFLE SCAVENGER MODS!!!!!
-
More ammo reserves and a bit higher body shot damage would all be useful

1 ReplyI'd love to be able to apply champion mods to them somehow to use in GM nightfalls
-
2 RepliesI think they are fine. The only problem is that they don’t get enough ammo in PvP.
-
4 RepliesThey already do enough damage in PvP, just depends on the connection of you get the kill or not
-
Tbh most of them don’t rly need a damage buff. The problem is that they have no ammo finder mods. If they had mods and maybe increased the amount of ammo they got per brick by +10 they would prob be solid
-
4 Replieswhat id do with coldheart: change it back to a primary weapon and get a brand new catalyst, one that lets you swap out the guns usual liquid based coolant for a new stasis based coolant by holding the reload down. the liquid coolant would function as the gun did back in year 1 with primary ammo, escalating damage and arc damage, the stasis coolant would use special ammo, swap the element and let you slow and eventually freeze targets
-
3 RepliesI’ll take anything to make Div better now that I own it
-
Increase the ammo pickup amount and give wave splitter a catalyst dammit. It's so stupid that it cant make its own orbs but its intrinsic perk relies on them.
-
2 RepliesGive wave splitter a catalyst and make it beam refract when it hits something
-
3 Repliesswitch them back from special ammo to primary ammo or buff the damage to bring them in line with other specials.

Edited by Olórin: 5/2/2021 11:44:29 PMGive all Trace rifles a DoT burn, perks that revolve around the beam can also be triggered by the Damage over Time effect. Example, Divinity striking an enemy and inflicting the Trace rifle DoT burn that will also proc the Judgement debuff perk. The burn stops after around five seconds.
-
I want divinity to have a catalyst
-
Other Trace rifles are turd and only good for doing bounties at shiro chi
-
I’d say increase auto aim greatly on them. The fact that aim assist can’t make the laser curve per say, means it has a much harder time then any other weapon to consistently keep on your opponent, let alone crits
