Light in the darkness
I have had a realization during a Strike in Destiny 2 and I would like to share this experience with all of you, but before it, I need to give you some context.
I am 36 and I really love playing video games, one of my first memories is when I was playing Atari’s River Raid at a friend’s house, I was only 3. I grew up playing many video games of all genres, I am that type of player that really loves playing everything.
But, yes, there is always a but! hehe… Well, when I was in my 20s, I discovered a degenerative disease in my eyes (Stargardt disease). So, I have been losing sight each year since that time.
In the beginning, I noticed I could not play fast games like racing or games that involve rhythm. Later on, games with Quick Time Events become a problem for me and so do some graphic styles or palette colors. But, I always keep trying to play everything.
Many times, my wife helps me to beat a QTE or a mandatory horse racing in a game, and in other moments, when we are playing together, we play the same stage in a loop only because the color composition and contrast suits me in a way that I can easily understand what is happening on the screen.
Now that we have the context, let's talk about Destiny. I had the opportunity to get a PS4 a few months after it was released, this way, I participated in the first Destiny beta and I loved it. I started to play it on the first day since the game was released. I was playing Destiny, taking my own time, with no pressure, doing everything by my own.
Because I know my limitations, I always avoided playing on Crisol as I felt bad if my team was defeated because of me. This feeling is so frustrating!
After some weeks playing, I got the level cap and nearly all the weapons and armors that were possible without playing in Raids or Crisols.
I had a good time with the loot caves… ;)
One day, I was on the Tower and a guy sent me an invitation to help him and his friend with a Strike. Both of them were freshers and they were looking for someone to help them. I could not perform very well on the Strikes, but in that moment, I already knew all of them and, as a Titan, I was good to be the last man standing. So, we started playing together very often and after some weeks we developed a good friendship.
They knew about my limitations to play, but it was never a problem to them, they always invited me to join the party and we had a lot of memorable Nightfall’s Strikes, some of them I can still remember as it was yesterday.
Although we have had to stop playing, we kept in contact. But, unfortunately, when Destiny 2 was released, we could not play it at that moment.
One year later,
At that moment, I was looking to achieve new challenges in my life and I moved to another country and it has been over 3 years since I have been here. After the release of D2, I played the campaign and I gave up before the end as I noticed that my sight was worse than before and I found it very difficult to play. And I never got the chance to play with my friends again.
I had just finished my post graduation when, suddenly, an invitation popped up to me. Yes, surprisingly, it was my old friends inviting me to play D2 and I decided to give it a goal.
As always they are very comprehensive about my limitations, they always help me, like waiting in a Strike or coming back to where I am so I can follow them in the dark.
We are having a lot of fun playing Destiny 2 together. They are rock!
But… Oh f***! This but again. :(
But, I am having more problems playing the game than ever. It would be amazing if Bungie could add some accessibility features in the game, but it is for another post.
With the new expansions, I got the season pass and I started playing in a Strike that I had never played before. My friends weren't there, however, there were two guys playing with me and, apparently, they knew that area like the back of their hands.
They destroyed everything on their way and at the end of that Strike my score was 0 0 0 0. What a shame! My face went red. I was so frustrated that I closed the game immediately.
Although I still wanted to play the game, I wouldn't like those people relating my nickname to a bad player. So, I decided to change my nickname. I was thinking of a nickname so that everybody could understand the reason why I do not play well.
I chose the nickname “The Blind Guardian”, there are a lot of meanings and easter eggs in this name. And the most important, the message is there. After that, I came back to play, always Strikes, because I know it wouldn't be a real pain for the other guys, because maybe that Strike would already be a bit harder to everyone.
So I played the first strike using the new nickname, everything was happening nicely. In the second Strike, I noticed that one player was always showing the directions for me and waiting for me during the whole Strike.
I know for most of you, it can look simple and a very small attitude, but I can't describe my feelings at that moment. The best part is that, later on, it happened again and again.
That afternoon was so pleasant and it made me so happy to be able to play without the thought that I was being a step back to the other players, it was just fun!
Me and my friends have been playing Destiny 2 and it is always so nice. So I would like to thank my friends, my wife, this powerful community and those amazing Guardians that lead me in the darkness and make it possible for me to do something that I love, playing video games.

2 RepliesI heard that there are Australian medical experts that have created the first bionic eye, which will completely restore vision in blind people. Hopefully, this will be made available and affordable to all in the future. I certainly hope you’ll be able to play again!

It is my genuine hope that you are able to continue enjoying Destiny and/or other games. I’m not on PS but if I was, I’d play with you in a heartbeat. Fortunately it sounds like you and your fireteam already exemplify what it means to be guardians. P.S ‘The Blind Guardian’ is an awesome name.

1 ReplyOp, you should've written this personal story on the DestinyTheGame subreddit. Those fellas enjoy long reads. The Bungie forums, not so much. Good on you tho, for having great buds to play. The older one gets, the harder it is to stay in touch or make long lasting friends to enjoy gaming with. 👍
