Not sure about everyone else but a tad tired of the CBMM vs SBMM arguments that have a tendency to turn terribly toxic. With both sides claiming the numbers support their preference. Anyone who has taken a few stats courses, knows number dicing is part science, part magic, with a creative writing component.
So Bungie here is an idea to help sort out the mine field. For one season offer the option to queue into QP control, using either SBMM or CBMM. If run it for whole season, should give a good view on preference even when the entry into the mode is affected due to quests, end of season drought, hitting cap etc. And this data could be analysised based on individual player preferences, percentage time playing pvp vs other activities, etc..
And to address supporters of CBMM that are going to argue that its going to impact their wait times. Yes it might ... but if truly a significant portion of player base does prefer CBMM experience, then the impact should be minimal. And if is more significant then still selecting CBMM will indicate that is your preference for when bungie looks at data.
Bungie depending on outcome, you can then hopefully decide on course for how pvp integrates into the overall game experience with regards to match making, with some solid numbers from overall player base. And please publish numbers, might help medicine go down on either side.
I know everyone can't / won't be satisfied, but think there needs to be a better understanding of preferences (which is the biggest argument both sides use). But this could help shape a potential compromise/balance between the portion of the player base that only wants to play pvp and those players that tend to play across all the modes.
Who knows maybe the SBMM/CBMM choice could work?
And if Bungie decides to just favor the opinion of either the pvp only group or those that in general play more of the whole game when making decision, so be it. Then one group can adjust or not adjust their play style if they so wish.
FYI - wanted to put this idea out there for thought, and as mentioned bit tired of it all so may not respond much. Cheers and eyes up Guardians.

The pollution caused by SBMM has made worse players crutch on it cause they know it exists and dont wanna try and improve

10 RepliesCBMM is best for D2.

46 RepliesGonna be real here, nobody who consistently plays PvP wants sbmm. PvP matchmaking should cater towards people who play PvP. There, I said it.

2 RepliesWhen SBMM was in most playlists, and CBMM in classic mix, classic mix was a ghost town. Now, most of those that prefer CBMM will say its because the icon for classic was tiny and off to the side, which is just bullshit. People chose the SBMM playlists because they prefered them. That is why Bungie only put SBMM in competitive modes this season. They allowed SBMM in the playlists that nobody wants to play. That way it looked like they were giving people a choice, while knowing full well nobody wants to play those modes, and would at least for awhile, play the stompfest modes.
-
just reduce # of playlist and give a choice on each. there everybody interested in a good game gets what they want, except the ppl that enjoy shooting into a barrel of fish.

Why would Jones pay for Dedicated servers tier, when he can keep minimal Shared servers and minimal code? Complex code executing accurate SBMM takes up too much processing power - especially when gearing up for a 'major' DLC release. Jones will always choose greed first, and you last.

7 RepliesPeople choosing and then limiting their potential pool of players to players who made the same choice would be a detriment to both systems. So under your idea, neither system would be working at full capacity. A better idea would be to allow players to choose their matching priority, skill or criteria, while both or evaluated. That way, everyone gets the possibility to match a huge pool of players, i.e., a player's choice doesn't limit their potential pool of players to the player who made the same choice.

Hey! You know what bungie thinks of good ideas, don't you? Looking for a perma ban?
great idea btw
Yup, works well in Halo 5, would happily wait a few extra mins for similar skill to improve, I'm not a pro (top 30% maybe?) but I typically do OK in quickplay so to have the option for more sweaty SB and more chilled CB would be nice.

I have always had fun in pvp after the go fast update. Sbmm or cbmm all the same to me for the exception that sbmm had wayyy too much lag and very long que times. I can pvp all day.

2 RepliesEdited by SSK0T: 10/6/2020 2:04:37 PMThe issue isn't a lack of data. -Bungie has all the data for every version of matchmaking they've ever tried. This almost certainly includes a bunch of behind the scenes changes that they have tried and not announced. - They have data for freelance vs not freelance Survival. -They have data from D1 when they had a solo QP list for a very short period of time. -They have data from the whole D2 QP era of SBMM in one mode and CBMM in another mode. -They have the data from this season with more CBMM and the PVP numbers are surprisingly high to me. There is no lack of data. They are more informed than anyone about what keeps people playing and are making decisions to try to keep people playing. Could it be better for you, or me, or someone? Sure, but they are going to make decisions based on what keeps the most people playing.

21 RepliesEdited by nomad_specter: 10/7/2020 4:21:32 AMI just want crucible to be fun again. I want a space to play the way I want to play (power fantasy) and if I can’t get that then I’ll just dip in for weekly bounties and leave. It’s just silly to try to make a game mode competitive when the variation on loadouts is extreme, the availability of modded controllers is vast, no dedicated servers (massive hit registry loss) and Bungie refuses to do anything about cheating. And there’s a lot more problems than this. Being a crucible pro is a lot like being world knife throwing champ. It’s not practical, the skills you acquire don’t apply to anything practical. But great job 👍

6 RepliesBungie already knows the answer to this question. ..and its why the game always goes back to SBMM whenver player numbers in PVP get high enough to support it....and only turns ot CBMM whenever numbers on one of the platforms (cough Stadia cough) gets too low to support it. Bungie is just never candid enough with this community to make it clear that this is why its being done. But don't buy the hype that Bungie doesn't know which MM system this community---as a whole---prefers.

2 RepliesGood idea, but I would much prefer Bungie to scrap the 50/50 method and also introduce a tier system. Not only would players of similar skill levels face each other, but it would cut out the 6v5 or 3v2 matches that are forced on solo crucible players to predetermine the outcome of each game. I would rather wait 5 minutes to load in to a fair and even match than to be thrown in to a rigged game that you're never gonna win.

1 ReplyThis "idea" wasn't thought out very well.

4 RepliesCBMM is more content creator friendly, and that's all bungie cares about. They've stated their goal is to make the game watchable. Allowing content creators to get games where they pubstop and get tons of clips will get them more exposure. SBMM might come back, but considering they seem to only care what the content creators think, it's doubtful

1 ReplyWould just like to be able to choose whenever I want tbh.

1 ReplyUnfortunately it seems that Bungie doesn't believe in options. Optional matchmaking for instance... how hard would that be? Launch something, have a pop up "Use Matchmaking?" two options "Yes" or "No". Hasn't been done in 6 years, so I wouldn't hold my breath. Not a bad idea though.
-
Destiny has never had CBMM. What they call CBMM seems completely random and hasn't lead to better connection.
-
2 RepliesKeep cbmm but balance the lobby

Edited by TJ_Dot: 10/6/2020 4:45:34 AMWhy run another Control vs Classic Mix fiasco when you could just implement priority settings to matchmaking and BE DONE WITH IT??? Why do we need to run a study?? Clearly, there's enough of a divide to say there's a group for both.

5 RepliesEdited by Christmas: 10/6/2020 5:00:18 AMHonestly none of this needs to be done and most reply’s here are absolute bias nonsense. This is not hard and I’m certain bungie already does this. I do it for my self. Just check the play population for your self every day. I check the PlayStation platform populations everyday and exclude iron banner weeks and the first 4 weeks or so of a new season. Just last week the PS pvp numbers were in the low 290k which is terrible when there is about 900k players. The trend is very easy to see. Just yesterday with IB PS only had 363k pvp and almost 830k total.
