If this game is only about grinding for temporary rewards, is that really a game?

The story is drip fed unlike any other game I’ve ever seen, the content is repetitive, legendary loot is as common as blues, 99% of what I find is immediately dismantled, all the loot I do like will mean nothing in mere months, I’m repeating activities not because they are fun but to boost an artificial “power” number that does almost nothing to improve gameplay or how powerful I actually feel, I could keep going. I’m struggling to realize which part of this is actually entertaining, I’ve kept doing weeklies and challenges and for what? I’ve played my crucible matches and gambit and strikes and raids and everything in between, just to get gear that isn’t a higher level. All this chasing just to ask myself why do it if none of the content is actually fun? I’m just chasing numbers TLDR: The end result of all of these questions is I’m just going to continue to wait for reviews like I have been since forsaken dropped. I’m not going to pre order or buy any more DLC’s that have content I could care less about.

Sunsetting reminds me of gear progression in MMOs, FF14 specifically. 13 or so weeks worth of raiding for the best gear in the content. Next patch with a new and higher level raid tier, time to repeat the song and dance and all the stuff collected during all these weeks, exist only to help you get the new stuff. Really not that different. As for the story... Yeah, needs more.

      • The game if you can even call it that anymore, has devolved into the freemium / phone app business model. You grind endlessly for rentals, never actually accomplishing anything, just living the illusion you're going somewhere. Sort of like a hamster on a wheel.

      • It's a game to see how much content can be created that becomes meaningless in a few months, but still exists in the 'game' while simultaneously cutting content because the 'game' is too large, as well as generating sales for said meaningless content AT THE SAME TIME as trying to retain long term player...acquire new players...sell micros...and sell back the meaningless content that was taken away! My head hurts just thinking about that. No wonder everyone is nuts with this 'game.'

          • It was originally sold as an multiplayer "epic adventure" game with an annual release cycle. Now with the seasonal model, it's no longer possible to have an "epic adventure" every quarter. There just isn't enough time to develop or tell a compelling enough story, or sufficiently develop new characters, much less develop the other parts of the game. Therefore, you get 2-3 hours of less than epic adventure, one new seasonal reward weapon, one activity, and then the rest is backfilled with mindless bounties, weekly pinnacles, and [expiring gear]/[seasonal power loss] (for which you will have to grind anew) to hold you over for another 3 months. If it feels like you aren't progressing at a reasonable pace, it is by design.

            • Agreed man. I miss the DLC Model. I’ll take the DLC Model over the Seasonal Model any day of the Week. I don’t fear Content Drought like others do. Why? Because I don’t have the mentality that others do of “Destiny is the only Game in existence and there is no other Games out there for me to play” I have a laundry list of Games that I can be playing while waiting for the next DLC Expansion for Destiny. I would take Content Drought over barebones Content that the Drip Feed Seasonal Model produces where as the DLC Model produces Content that is crammed packed with Content that is fun, engaging with a lot to do. When I hear people complain about Content Drought, all I hear is “I’m too impatient for DLC so I want something to do every week” and Wah Wah Wah. These people need to get over themselves and learn some goddamn patience and go play other games, there is plenty out there and there are plenty coming out. The Impatience of Gamers have destroyed the Gaming Industry if I’m going to be completely honest. Let me let people on a little secret. The reason Developers are complaining about crunch when it comes to releasing their Games? BECAUSE OF IMPATIENCE GAMERS WHO WANT EVERYTHING NOW!!!! So Gamers who want everything NOW will get very little in their expansions and then turn around and -blam!- that content is barebones and repeats that vicious circle over and over again. The DLC Model if we allowed Developers to go back to that model, not only would they not have to worry about crunch, they would be able to slow down, spend some time with the development team to come up with Ideas for bomb ass content that would blow us away with a lot to do in the DLC that they release. The Seasonal Model is cancer to the Gaming Industry. Truth me told, NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY wanted nor asked for the Seasonal Model. The ONLY person that asked for it was SayNoToRage and Bungie has been up his ass since I don’t remember how long but it’s been a long time and taking their marching orders from him. NOBODY asked for Sunsetting and yet, SayNoToRage asked for it and Bungie obeyed him and now we have Sunsetting. Never let anyone tell you Bungie doesn’t listen to Streamers cause they F. U. C. K. I. N. G do no question and Sunsetting and the Seasonal Model never would have come to pass had SNTR kept his mouth shut and just enjoyed how Destiny was with the DLC Model. A little patience goes a long way and pays off in the end. Like I said, Impatience has killed the Looter Shooter Genre. If people want a Live Service Game, Build a PC, go get a Subscription to World of Warcraft, The Old Republic etc. and go play that and leave Destiny alone and stop making it like WoW or SWTOR. Seriously, the DLC Model is the best way to go In the Gaming Industry. It is what’s best for the Developer as well as the Consumer. It avoids Crunch on both ends cause let’s face it, the Seasonal Model actually just transfers the Crunch cause it manipulates people’s Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) by time gating everything forcing to player to crunch to get everything before the clock runs out. So with the DLC Model, nobody has to experience Crunch, not the Consumer, not the Developers etc. Games like Division, Destiny etc. would be so much better off for everyone if the DLC Model would be more acceptable. Also Vaulting of Content just adds to this crunch shit. #DLCModelOverSeasonalModel.

Annual/season/battle pass was the worst thing to ever happen to this game. It has led to nothing but subpar, atrocious “labeled as new content and activities.” This game has become nothing more than endless, mundane, repetitive, boring bounties linked to endless repetitive quests, and now attached to armor (Solstice armor is only the beginning). Weapons and armor are nothing more than reskined, reused, reissued, repurposed, relabeled, recycled with unimaginative skins of the same thing over and over. Assets have been stripped and pillaged over and over from D1 and D2. Only to have them resold with the same treatment of; reskined, reused, reissued, repurposed, relabeled, and recycled content. And to top it all off, they sunset everything you’ve earned, just to have it recycle and resold to you time and time again. Selling you on endless lies to justify why they do what they do. (Here’s your Ace of Spades “insert OP weapon here” for a 3rd and 4th time) Drip feeding content is a terrible player experience.... Yet, they do it to you every 3 months. Time gating and drip feeding content, only to prolong the inevitable disappointment of terrible story telling, time and time again. Terrible story missions that can barely even be called story missions. (Oh cool, some more endless text and voice over as I stare at a glowing ball and tree, oh joy) What made this game fun and awe inspiring, was the hyped hopes and forward thinking of a massive endless world. Where hundreds of guardians and friends could fight along side each other in changing worlds (thinking about that first E3 presentation back in 2013). New DLC’s with actual content telling a story and adding substance to the planets we explore. It’s not rocket science, adding new planets, new patrol zones, new weapons, new armor, new crucible maps, new story telling new missions, new campaigns, new strikes, new enemies, new characters introduced, new updates, new concepts, and new ways to play the game (Looking at you Taken King and Rise of Iron) is why millions upon millions played this game daily. Key word here is NEW, then players wouldn’t mind sunsetting planets and content for the new. If Bungie is hell bent on keeping seasons, then hell, they should be about changing the gaming environments and adding new ones for said activities to correlate for what the season event is about. Instead we have a TOWER change with an added NPC and a few banners (oh joy, exhilarating). Instead, here is today’s Destiny. After 7 years we have more of the same. I can’t believe, that after 7 years of this game, what we have today is the BEST Destiny we can get from Bungie??? I find that extremely hard to believe. Limited fire teams of 6, and limited instances of 9. With all the technology out in the world today 2020 Destiny should be light speeds ahead of what it once was. Yet, to its core of the same mundane game mechanics it’s the same. This game needs to end. It just does. They need to sell this franchise off to another studio that actually uses the most technological advances in gaming engines. A studio that looks forward and isn’t all about using micro transactions as paid content drops. Instead, Bungie chooses to code their game on an engine that is antiquated to say the least. A gaming engine that causes developers massive headaches of endless bugs and glitches. A game engine that is so terrible and outdated (only studio that uses it, horrendous proprietary engine) that is extremely un-user friendly that fixing a small issue takes weeks upon weeks. Ultimately, wasting precious time and depriving developers from creating and building new game environments.

                • Most of the time the actual gameplay is tight, however, there is no reward for playing now, nothing to chase. The other problem is the "bullet sponge" approach to 'endgame' content. When I can be 1081 (1060 on all three weapons and three pieces of armor) using Xeno and Actium with 34 rounds available and pour them into the last Kell in Prophecy and they barely take 10% of it's health that's not a mechanic, that's just dull.

                  • Bungie’s seasonal model means it’s not a story anymore. It’s just a grind fest. I’ll admit that my play has picked up a bit lately after taking several months off. But I’m trying to get all the exotics I can before they go away. Joe Staten wrote the original story. Luke Smith messed it all up, to the point that there is literally no more story. So, what does Bungie do?
Remake the Vault of Glass of course! Except you can play that raid anytime you want on D1 already 🤦🏻‍♂️
Luke Smith needs to go. Staten should be brought back. Bungie should release a Destiny redo.

                  • I haven't logged on in over a month. That is my longest time away from Destiny since D1..and it was for this reason, why bother if everything is being taken away from us? I put serious work into getting the Mountaintop/Breakneck and the other pinnacles only to have them taken away. Then it makes me think, will this happen again in a year?

Couldn't care less about the loot. The game as a whole is fun to me. After work I wanna raid, blow of some steam in strikes or have some fun in Dungeons while simply enjoying the games atmosphere etc. Games are a waste of time but a fun way to do so. That was always the purpose of videogames. Entertaining time wasters. When I played Mega Man in the 90s, nobody gave a damn about loot or the game being like 30 minutes long or having no rewards AT ALL besides a credit screen with the words: CAPCOM 1997 "Thank you for playing!" And then you played over and over because it was simply pure fun to do so cauz everything was on point. The action, the music, the challenge. I mean do you HONESTLY care for that stuff in like 10 years on? Everything loses its meaning. Games these days simply wanna try to keep you busy, that's all. Because for some idiotic reason the term "work" and "reward" changed to a new kind of "fun" for a quite a few generations now. Games never should be seen as work. If you think it is, stop playing and show the loot or the (underwhelming) rewards the finger.

                        • This sentiment, the second Bungie mentioned weapon retirement, I knew this would be the side effect of that decision. Bungie is going to strip ( and in some ways, they’ve already done it ) Destiny of a feature that core to its identity. What’s the point of busting your ass to collect something, when you know Bungie just going to take it away from you a year later?

                          • You ever play Call of Duty? Where a new game comes out every single year only to leave all your "progress" behind? But in reality you are literally getting the same game over and over again but just reskinned weapons? Any and all cosmetics purchased rendered completely useless when the new gamr drops? At least in Destiny they are still allowing you to keep your weapons you earned, continue to use the cosmetics you purchased. Just because you cant use the same weapons you have been using the LAST THREE F'IN YEARS in pinnaclr activites anymore, the option to use them in lower tiered activities still remains. If you cant handle change in a video game then good luck handling anything a real job will throw at you.
