How is it possible that the devs keep reading the community so wrong?

Honestly. After 5+ years. How do tone def changes and "finales" happen? In any other loot based game, as a player. When I do X, whatever that may be, I expect there to be a Y. If I complete an activity, I, as a player, expect their to be something waiting for me at the end. And the fun of playing a game like that, is the anticipation of what that reward might be. the formula for making this a fun and repeatable process, IMO, centers on how "good" that reward might be, as it relates to the amount of effort involved in getting there. That is a simple breakdown of any loot based system. Do X, get Y. Bungie, when we log into the game, our goal is not JUST to have "fun". "Fun" is subjective. Players find "fun" in many different ways. But in a game centered on various systems of progression. That "fun" is always tied to some sort of accomplishment. Some sort of "reward". That can range from getting 30 kills in crucible. To leveling up via weekly bounties. To having that coveted piece of loot drop. But there ALWAYS needs to be something tangible that can be associated with the time spent playing. In short, there always needs to be "loot". Be it an item, character progress, change in status, whatever. There has to be SOMETHING gained for the time put in. And that, to me, is the biggest issue with Destiny. Far too often, the output does not match the input. You ask for more and more investment from the player, for what seems to be, less and less of a payoff. That's not a community problem. That's not a game systems problem. That is a problem with the core philosophy of your development and design process. Rather than being the central premise of developing the game. You treat that fundamental aspect as secondary to whatever it is you THINK is more important. And that is why people complain. That is why people are underwhelmed by things like Final Assault. Why they question what is and isn't part of Eververse. Why people generally dislike the way you manage the game. Because you prioritize your "vision" over giving people reasons to buy into that vision. When D2 launched you added Lost Sectors. And prior to launch. I was pretty excited about the idea of secret and repeatable mini dungeons, wondering what types of loot I would find. Looking forward to farming mini bosses for items I liked. But that's not what they were. That's not how they were implemented. All of these cool little areas. Fun encounters. And what was the reward? Junk items. Nothing special. Not even specific world items that could be farmed. Nope. Tokens. We got tokens to go and buy gear. Huh? What sense did that ever make in terms of a loot based game? Why waste such a cool idea? What was the point? You keep strikes in game. Yet you take the primary reason people ran them over and over again in D1 out of the equation(unique loot). Again, huh? WHO on your team thought that this was something so insignificant that it was not made a priority for launch? IN A LOOT BASED GAME? Step back, stop whatever you are working on, and take a long look at the core elements of Destiny. Remember how you sold the game to the player. Remember that YOU presented loot as being something to be hunted and coveted. A reward for both time and our ability to complete a task. Season of the Undying has all of the components needed to be successful, EXCEPT for these core elements. Core elements that have been missing since D2 launched. If I am doing Lost Sectors, or Strikes on the moon. Regardless of the vendor specific frames and bounties. There needs to be SOMETHING unique to those elements that differentiates them from season to season. Like Nightmare Hunts, the dungeons, etc. Or you need to remove them altogether. Why? Because you are constantly pushing us into these activities. You create quests that require dozens of completions of strikes, gambit, crucible, lost sectors, public events... We HAVE to do those things, apart from the new content, just to progress. To complete seasonal quests. They all remain a huge part of the grind. So they too need to be rewarding. 50 Gambit matches is a lot less annoying if it has Season of the Undying themed gear. Ornaments, weapons, shaders, whatever. Doing the same lost sector every week is a lot less tedious if there is a chance at something rare, something unique, that can ONLY be obtained in the lost sector. This is what people should get in a season. Not just an XP track where I hit a rank and collect an arbitrary reward. The community wants to FEEL the value of the activities they do. They want to accomplish something, no matter how tedious it might seem. That is how you keep people happy. And ultimately that is how you keep people coming back for more.

You sir believe this is a game, bungie has proven time and time again it's a Cash cow. They have one of the best game selling strategies ever. Step one..HYPE Step 2... SELL Step 3.. fake incompetence and claim your gonna do better . Step 4 .. if found out you don't care enough for real content , simple claim your going a new direction. Reskin and recolor existing items Step 5... Claim it will be different and go back to Step 1

    • Counter argument: How is it possible that Bungie still tries to serve everyone? How is it possible that they try to make this game for everyone?

      • That's giving them more credit than they deserve. It implies that they actually care about what the player wants. If it was an infrequent occurrence, they could be given the benefit of the doubt. But it is not infrequent, but a constant from day one. Bungie does not care what we want, but only does enough to keep us coming back. They could make the effort to address the many requests and QoL improvements we ask for, but they do not because they do not want to. And making games is hard /s....

      • For some reason bungie thinks that every loot drop has to be based on RNG. With mathematical percentages determining whether or not you get the reward offered by completing that activity. I see that as one of the biggest complaints the player base makes. But bungie refuses to change that policy. People will play the game if loot drops are guaranteed. The shooter mechanics are what keep me coming back, not the loot. Listen bungie. For a change. Perhaps new leadership is required.

Y'all could just... Idfk... Quit? Jesus Christ y'all complain non-stop and see nothing or very little is changing. Seeing all of this negativity can't be good for the devs or cm mental. But hey keep it up maybe rage does have a positive outcome😒 Edit: I'm just saying over the summer a huge transition happened with bungie leaving act.Was not a healthy relationship. Now they are solo and NEED to manage what they do way better as they don't have the funds or man power. But they did warn all of you of this multiple times over the summer. No bells went off? None? Nothing told you to wait? Give them time or move the hell on. If you are going to stay insults, shitting on devs and cm isn't good for anyone. As much as I hate Reddit (and I hate Reddit destiny players), %80 of the time they know how to leave feedback without crushing the devs spirits. ....Just move on you're not doing anyone justice. OR keep the feedback coming, even if it's salty. Do it without calling devs idiots or stupid etc because we have noooo -blam!-ing idea how things are going on the inside.

        • If it was as simple as do x and get y, then how would you make a 30 minutes video from it an run a channel streaming endless grind for 15+ hours every day. As a Forbes article said, even with perfect RNG, you need 80 pinnacle drops to get 980. With the +2 improvement a perfect RNG will take 40 pinnacle drops for this. The fomo and hype can only be used in channels and phrases like, "guys, if you want this weapon, shader, armour, you can get it by RNG in this activities so come like my channel, subscribe and play with me" will be useful. I remember back in d1 when the diva strike was new. I was learning it via a stream and the streamer asked me to join in. We spent 7 hours messing about and doing it and we even got all the monitors in first run. I liked it and enjoyed it. Now 2-3 years later, this is the business model for Bungie. I am ok with this because honestly speaking most of the streamers are great players. However, they are the only ones contributing to the game now with ideas and herding of new players via free advertisement for crap game content. If Bungie did it's part then it won't be so bad.

        • The sad part is - Bungie knows this all too well. They just cannot deliver this and have to play a bit dumb for damage control. They are desperately trying to generate revenue with hype and milk the IP for as long and as far as it goes.

I load into the tower and then suddenly become very tired. I have been falling asleep while running around the tower grabbin' bounties and doing other tasks. Sometimes, I'll ask myself why am I even signing on? Nightmare hunts are forgettable and the dungeon doesn't even have unique drops. Shadowkeep is just boring. I'd like to get the seasonal seal, but Vex Offensive is just boring to run.

          • Who told you they were reading the community at all? I mean they lost 97% of their playerbase within two months of the release of a sequel that cost much more than the original and that only proved that they weren’t even able to analyse what made them successful. Today they’re still 85% down, during peak days (content release). If anything Bungie cares about the wrong market segment. What business in the world makes beggars and jobless scrubs a primary target. Politics don’t count!

          • Ya know, Undying bullshit aside, the biggest let down for me in Shadowkeep was the loot at the end of the new dungeon. Upon first completion I knee it was a waste of time. A fully masterworked helmet.....at 67 stats..... 67.. What is the point? I could see if when you dismantle it you get an ascendant shard. So far I have kept NONE of the loot from this new dungeon. I love these dungeons. Seriously. But this is bad man.. A secondary let down was that the dungeon is WAY too easy for 3 players. I get it. They want us to solo it flawlessly. But the code is so fuked up the enemies are glitching everywhere.. Laggy as hell.

            • Because Luke Smith. Any other profession when there is a breakdown somewhere that isn’t getting fixed guess what gets replaced? The big guy. The community sits there and acts like the devs don’t listen to us...that’s because they aren’t allowed. They have been given a direction to take the game by the lead of the whole game and he won’t give up his vision. This is in no way absolving the CM’s of this community...they are awful. Some of the worst I’ve ever seen.

            • Best post I have seen in a while. And yes the input has not been worth the output for a while now. The rewards for 95% of the activities in this game are not worth the time invested. Where is the loot? Feels like all I do is dismantle the same garbage over and over again. Where is my clan? Most of them have abandoned the game again. Might be time to take a break again myself. This game needs some serious changes. And not the changes some streamer that plays the game 24/7 wants.

            • As a long time Bungie fan and Halo/D1 vet I have to agree they’ve respected their core player base’s time investment less and less with each release. It truly does feel less “fun” as, we are getting less of a reward for more effort. A small grind for something good is ok. A large grind for something amazing is ok. However a large grind for something good or just mediocre or worse still, even something pretty bad, is just inexcusable and unacceptable. This is where we are now.

            • They add the final assault - no loot to go with it . Bafflingly bad form. We loaded in the vex offensive and were like “ damn bungie same thing , then we finish the first arena and the door didn’t open . So we were running around all excited looking for something new and then saw a player was joining ... haha what timing . Sadly you can’t expect anything stellar from bungie anymore. Let alone any new loot or content. All we have to do to make them listen is as a community stop player their game. Stop buying season passes dlc and not give them any more money for their mediocrity .

Problem isn’t reading the community. It’s reading the ENTIRE community. That‘s difficult as when you make a decision one way, you will always have some be upset. Which is why you never see uniform -blam!-. Just people who assume that their critique is the temperature of the room. It’s honestly a winless battle as every game company can probably attest. Visit the communities for any similar game and you are gonna see the exact same types of critiques and feedback. This has never been a solely Bungie issue.
