'Per Audacia ad astra' Bungie aerospace slogan.
Now Im sure this is old but didnt find anything relevant in the searchbar so here I go.
On the Bungie aerospace web-page it says Per Audacia ad astra.'
Roughly translated this means 'very boldness to star.'
Now obviously this is not what it should mean to one speaking latin but once you translate 'very boldness to star' back into latin it says 'valde temeritas ut astrum' which means 'intensely rashness when star'.
This does not properly translate to Latin however,properly,so this leaves us with the two terms.
'Very boldness to star' and 'intensely rashness when star'
So then what is the actual meaning of 'Per Audacia ad astra'
The only word we can be certain of is star.
Now this essentially means something along the lines of...'Only the bold may venture to the stars' or 'One must be rather rash when amongst the stars'
So what do you think of that...

The British Royal Air Force motto is 'Per Ardua ad Astra' which is meant as 'Through adversity to the stars'. I'd assume 'Per Audacia ad Astra' would translate to 'Through Boldness to the stars'.

In my language, portuguese from Brazil, it means to the stars and foward.

I believe the word “audacia” could be translated to “boldness”. The whole plot of Destiny is about bravery or fearlessness. It’s our destiny to defend our star system with bravery and boldness blah blah blah. I do believe the intended context here is “Boldly we go to the stars”.

The direct translation from Latin to English is "By daring to the stars" which pretty much sounds right on its own. No more translation needed.

10 RepliesI am so frustrated by these threads. OP, I am not mad at you, but I am frustrated that there is confusion here. I believe correct information has already been posted here, but I will re-emphasize the truth and solve this once and for all. "Per audacia ad astra" Firstly, the way you worded your OP, it sounds like you are using some online Latin translator to make your point about ambiguity. That WILL NOT work. Latin isn't a language like that. It is a heavily inflected language with a very economical vocabulary and a million different grammar constructions to one case. It requires human intelligence to decipher; machines can only attempt. "Per" -Preposition with accusative case. It means "through, along", but it can have other meanings. It can be assumed that it means through due to the obvious parallelism with [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per_aspera_ad_astra]this famous quotation[/url], with which the entire thing is an allusion to. "Audacia" -Noun. "Courage", "Daring, "Audacity". It is first declension feminine, which is odd, because it is not in the accusative case as the object of "Per". This is either just a lack of Latin knowledge by Bungie or just because "Per audacia" sounds better than "Per audaciam" or "Per audacias". Either way, the word order and parallelism with the aforementioned phrase demonstrates that this noun is the prepositional object of the preceding word. "Ad" -Preposition with accusative. It means "to, towards". It implies physical motion, unlike usage of the Dative case of the referred noun. "Astra" -Noun. Astrum -i n. Accusative plural is "a". It means "stars" or "constellation". Final translation: [b]To the stars (figurative language) through (audacity/daring/courage).[/b] There aren't too many other ways you could translate it. The oddity with the "audacia" case could also be that it is in ablative using the mean/instrument construction, implying that we are going to do it with and through audacity. They've been through so much to bring us these great games and they almost burned out a few times. Go on YouTube and watch "O Brave New World" by BUNGiE and you'll understand. it also shows up at the end of the video so... Maybe I'm on to something?
