I've always loved math, but never really understood why people detested it. So just as a prerequisite to this thread, I am genuinely curious as to what people don't like about math. I understand that math is not for everyone, and that everyone learns differently. This isn't to judge anyone based on their lack of mathematical understanding.
So what is it specifically about math that you dislike?
Do the trig functions make no sense? Are you struggling with understanding Cramer's rule? Does the concept of "imaginary" numbers make no sense to you? Is polynomial factoring a lost cause? What's the purpose of a vector? Etcetera

2 RepliesBased on the comments in your post, and my knowledge and experience of our (public) educational system over the years, (in America that is) I would postulate that people's negative feelings about math have a more to do with how they're introduced to it, and how our public educational system emphasizes indoctrination over education. Look at some of the comments in your post. It's all right there.
I feel its not math people hate as much as math class.

BUT, my HATRED comes from schools making it mandatory to take math courses that the everyday person WILL NEVER USE IN LIFE.

Oh i don't hate math at all i just hate how it's represented to us(books) and the way it is taught to us(shitty teachers)

Shit teachers and boring school curriculums.

He also graded homework for accuracy, not completion. And if you forgot your red pen(had to be red) he would make you pay him 25 cents or get written up. The dude was a dick.

I like to take my time with the stuff, but sadly, in the rat race of school it's survival of the fastest.

the amount of homework given daily killed my motivation on it.

I had a terrible geometry teacher so I don't like geometry to much
Of course it makes no common sense to stereotype and say this is the sole reason why people have negative feelings about math as much as they do, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, as others have alluded to in your post. But the empirical evidence strongly suggest that our public school system's have failed to keep up with our modern society. We are teaching our children from the beginning to be 1950's automatons. Curiosity and creativity are stifled from the very start. This is something that should never be done if we want to nurture and help bring forth enlightened human beings. A child has an innate curiosity about almost everything! Their desire to learn, discover, explore, experience, to imagine! It is intrinsic. Educators and administrators in authority, treating our children and young adults like subhuman crap, increases the probability of creating a negative outcome. It's a simple as that. And the reality is, some never recover. Or it takes years to catch up. My daughter is 5 years old. We homeschool (math is her favorite subject by the way) and she is thriving! There is absolutely no way we would ever let her go to public school, to be thrown to the wolves, and eaten alive. By the way, because of this post, I found a cool little video about math. I'm going to make sure that she sees it at the proper time. "Thank you OP." https://youtu.be/OmJ-4B-mS-Y Now I'm curious. I would like to know, what was your upbringing and experience in regard to your formal education, and specifically in regard to mathematics? Were you encouraged and nurtured to thrive and flourish in these disciplines? Tell me about your support system as well. Were your parents involved? Of course I understand all of this is ongoing. I'm talking about your beginning. Your younger years. "Public" school... Or something else? If you don't mind, that is...

I think it was just the process of how it is taught to students and the teachers who do it. It's gotten better over time for me and was able to get all my math credits for graduation (so now in my senior year I can take a break from math). A part of that is I had one of the most beloved teachers in my school teach me algebra, and it made near perfect sense to me, while my best friend unfortunately had the one of the most disliked math teachers and he, as well as most of the teacher's classes failed in mass. And the other big factor is of course... Common Core, which is, in my opinion, as well as fair amount of my school's teachers think too, is the worst possible way to teach math. It just ignores common sense and takes way longer to understand than other ways. And it seems that our education system (America's at least) is also teaching outdated methods of math. Back to my algebra teacher, he had been teaching since the late 60s and early 70s and he was still being told to use the same ways of teaching that were used back then as well as when he was first learning it. Knowing how to solve complex equations in your head is a nice skill to be sure, but the age old argument that "you'll never have a calculator on you at all times" just doesn't hold water anymore, in an age were most of the population pretty much has the power of a computer as well as the Internet at their disposal at moment's notice.

7 RepliesEdited by Zavala's Pet Cat: 3/1/2017 5:55:25 PMI like math until the numbers go away and its just letters. Like this: cos(x) - sin(tan(x)/cos(x)) = cot(x) - 1 WHY?! HOW CAN I MAKE LETTERS EQUAL EACH OTHER?! IF I HAD WHAT X IS THIS WOULD BE OK BUT NOOOOO THEY HAVE TO BE SATANICALLY EVIL. ITS LIKE WHEN YOUR HANDS GET SORTA STICKY AND YOU CANT WASH IT OFF. ITS TORTURE!!!

I disliked the fact that Katie Johnson who used to sit next to me and was an absolute 10/10 had a boyfriend. So, sexual inadequacy I guess.

Edited by Snow: 3/4/2017 2:39:43 AMIt's work pretty much, a menial task that serves almost no purpose in a lot of environments for the average joe. P.S does anyone actually struggle with trig?

I like the concept of math I don't necessarily like doing it if I already understand it I don't like doing it if I don't understand it I hate not understanding math
-
Only math I've ever enjoyed doing involved ballistics. Other than that, math in general just isn't very interesting to me.
-
It's mentally exhausting and I can't organize numbers in my head, even if the math is basic.
-
9 RepliesIt's not necessarily an inherent dislike of math by itself. But it's just that math is so much content to learn for seemingly no reason. Yes, there are certain professions that require knowledge of complex math. However, most students are going to make their livings without the use of advanced math. Higher math like calculus is just more trouble than it's worth for most people.
I am genuinely curious as to what people don't like about math.
I have no problem with math in itself. It's something we use everyday without even thinking about it. My job revolves around it. BUT, my HATRED comes from schools making it mandatory to take math courses that the everyday person WILL NEVER USE IN LIFE. Then you go to college, and they MAKE YOU TAKE THE SAME THING OVER AGAIN!!!! School should be about preparing you for what you will become. Most people will NEVER use algebra or need to know about geometry proof T's (which was the most ridiculous waste of class time I've ever spent). If they do, they're using formulas for it and don't even know it. Teach the essential knowledge. If you desire to go into a math intensive field that requires trig, calculus, statistics, whatever, - then go further and learn them. But stop making people who don't get and won't get problem solving with making letters = numbers mandatory. It's entirely unnecessary.

2 RepliesBecause the whole time of algebra is spent finding x

2 RepliesTeachers always spend more time stressing the difficulty than actually explaining it. The more difficult they portray it to be the more time I spend thinking the problem was too easy, and that somehow I did something wrong.

I dislike the people that complain about math.
