So I don't know when this happened (maybe sometime around 1 P.M. E.S.T this past Friday?), but I am seeing all over the forums that the radar is now considered a crutch relied on by people who think they are elite (but are actually terrible at this game in every possible way). Apparently, using an in-game mechanic that helps to make up for terrible audio cues is now considered "being a crutch player." These forums never fail to make my brain nice and toasty.
Edit 1: LOL we're somehow trending. Might respond to some of you, might not, IRDK. Have quite a bit of shit to do, so we'll see what happens.
Edit 2: I need to make this clear. At it's current state this game is shit, and I'm trying to avoid playing it because I need my sanity to finish my final paper. I was just interested in what people had to say about the topic. I do not have an opinion on the matter. Really couldn't care less at this point. But I do think they really need to look at more detailed audio cues in Destiny 2 if they truly are considering a "competitive" gameplay, regardless of what they do with the radar.

Sounds like a silly thing to complain about, but hey, that's bungo forums for you...

Radar takes no skill anyways

I hate arguments like this. The radar can be a crutch, but it can also be used skillfully. Some players have done worse and some have done better.

2 RepliesMy friends make fun of me because I like 3rd eye on all my long distance primaries (Scouts/Pulses basically). They don't understand that most of the time, if you're shooting with your primary and can't see you're likely to get killed by some random guy who snuck up on you with a shotgun (And I also don't have to de-scope every few seconds while I'm trying to kill someone). And during this weekend for Trials (Which I'm bad at anyway), they were blaming it on the fact that I like to use the radar, but really it's just because 1. I'm not good with the tenseness of Trials, so I do bad anyway (Not to mention they expect me to carry them which I can't do). 2. There's no other way to know if someone is camping/around a corner, unless they jump, use an ability, or shoot. 3. Call outs are awful
-
You sound like the elite here..no one cares.
-
Well you don't know if it's a crutch until you take it away right? I wouldn't call it a crutch just yet though. I'm sure if radar was taken away permanently, then people would adapt to it eventually. Kinda like heroic raids not letting you revive; it's rough at first.
-
I like the way the radar is right now. I don't like the radar in other fps games and like knowing when I'm in a sticky situation.
-
Using the Radar is a crutch for bad players. Also not having the Radar is a crutch for bad players. So basically you suck.

1 ReplyWhen I first played destiny, coming from counter strike and MW, I loathed the radar. It was bad enough as a UAV or other perk in other games. But a constant beacon informing players of enemy location.. not my cup of tea. Im used to it with destiny, but if an update took it away, I would most likely enjoy crucible more.

1 ReplyEdited by Southside Shorty: 10/31/2016 6:09:39 PMFor some elite players the radar is a vital resource they rely on. This is who fails horribly when it is taken away and considered a crutch. Not saying they aren't elite just saying they can't play without a radar. Personally i've beaten people who had insane KDs this week just by communicating and using simple strats and if you look I have a decent KD.

5 RepliesTo be honest it is the only pseudo fps that has one. That said the mechanic has been present since launch, does not make whining about it not being in trials valid. Inferno has also been a thing for a while, as well as teamwork. No I do not play trials, I prefer the madness of 6+ vs 6+ matches, however it seems to me that 3 v 3 should have been inferno the whole time.
-
2 RepliesI've also been taught that the following are crutches: 1. Shotguns. Especially when combined with sliding, or abilities such as blink and juggernaut. 2. Aim assist. 3. Resurrection shield bonus. 4. Construction of any map if used for a tactical advantage. This includes the random selection of where a team spawns. 5. Supers. Obviously all of these were designed and put in the game to serve as handicaps for the less skilled players. Myself included, I am the worst crucible player in history.

1 ReplyI use shadows so I'm a ninja and I don't mind what people think especially people that think their quickscope aim assis sniping is sniping lol
-
1 ReplyThey should change the radar to a mini map or make the radar flash every know.
-
2 RepliesScrubs: "Quit using your radar you nuub!" Elite gamer: "Sorry to abuse a mechanic that is in the game for everyone." *radar is taken away* Scrubs:"You and your team are a POS for sticking together as a team and using callouts!" Elitist: "WTF DO YOU WANT!?!"
-
1 ReplySimple solution is only have the radar be red when someone is shooting their weapon, using melee or grenades. Like it should be in the first place. Constant radar leads to kids jumping up and down around corners with a shotgun waiting for people to walk thru the door. Lamest way to play ever.
-
2 RepliesThe radar is a crutch, huh? It exists in literally every game mode except Inferno variations, and there's a good reason for it. Destiny is not a super-mobile game. I know some will disagree with that, but I recall playing shooters like Unreal tournament, where you can easily cover half the map in 5 to 10 seconds. Destiny doesn't compare. Anyone calling the radar a 'crutch' is likely to never be in the highest tier of players. Reason being, most of the best consider the game to be primarily chess, using bullets, approaches, positions and radar images to determine moves and countermoves. It's not something to prop you up, it's an additional skill to learn that can put you over the top or bury you. Claiming it's a 'crutch' is the same as admitting you're either bad at it or you don't know how to manipulate others use of it. So, I suppose, go ahead and insist it's something bad; I'll keep my third eye and memory of gheleon on. You may have an insult, but I'll have the advantage, and I'm fine with that trade.

3 RepliesYou guys know one of the reasons why top tier players do well is because they use their radar more efficiently then a regular average joe?
-
Edited by cuzzybubba1: 10/31/2016 6:35:40 PMI would say no radar helps bad players if anything, it helps hide horrible habits like running around corners cluelessly, rushing with a shotty like an ape...etc.. Not sure how anyone would enjoy a no radar rumble or 6's, seems retarded to me but then again I NEVER play Inferno. lol
-
5 RepliesDestiny works like this.... " you play diffrent then I do ?? quit using crutches scrub!!!"
-
People love to say "just adapt" or "git gud" until they have to themselves lol.
-
14 RepliesIt's a crutch, if it destroys your game when it's taken away and you can't win without it. That's all there is to it. Before all the criticism- no, I know I sucked at Trials and I have a sub-1.0 KD. But when Inferno is match of the week, sometimes I do well, sometimes not well, just like regular Crucible. So, my radar is not a crutch.
-
Radar awareness is one of the most important things to have in a shooter
-
2 RepliesIn my opinion, radar shouldn't be in ToO. Revives are ok... But, for the "hardest" PvP mode, there shouldn't be a radar. Yes, I suck at Trials, but I've always thought that there shouldn't be a radar. It makes the game more fun, and competitive.
-
10 RepliesThe radar is not a crutch. People think that no radar is "competitive" because you can camp the hell out of corners. But no radar doesn't work with Destiny, there are absolutely no audio cues (besides jumping) to help pinpoint position. If you could hear footsteps then sure, no radar would work. But when you have no form of tracking and no audio to help track than what we have is an environment that promotes camping but also relies on luck. Overwatch has no radar or minimap, but what it has is significant audio cues. Each individual character has their own unique footsteps, and the more "dangerous" they are, the louder the footsteps will be. These audio cues make tracking easier and you can't just hide. People who call radar a crutch are idiots, it isn't an environment reliant upon skill, instead it's "hope they don't see you."

1 ReplyAnyone who believes it's a crutch and is doing well all of a sudden should invite me to play a private rumble with them. No HUD. Knowing how many rounds you have left or if your super is charged is a crutch as well.
