An early "Rise of Iron" review from Polygon.

So I know I've said repeatedly that I would wait for the "new DLC shine" to wear off before purchasing Rise of Iron for Destiny, and I intend to hold to that declaration of intent. However; due to past reviews of Destiny and its related products, I had assumed that the reviews would be "glowing" and nothing but "Bungie-love" for the first few weeks. It's quite possible I was wrong. Polygon apparently got to sit down and play through the greatest majority of the RoI PvE content and some of it's PvP. The reviews are not glowing, even with the DLC only being out -24 hours. You can read Polygon's early access review here. Another early review, this one from iDigitalTimes. Another review from Paul Tassi at Forbes that is spot on. While I appreciate that the author said that he would release a more complete review later, this initial impression doesn't leave a good feeling for a PvE-only player like myself. I'm an MMO kid, and have been for 20+ years. PvE is entirely in my wheelhouse, and is the bread-and-butter that I look for in a game and its DLC/Expansions. But a Campaign that can be played through in 2-3 hours if you take your time!? That does not sit well with someone who is "on the fence" about whether or not to purchase this DLC (because it certainly is not an Expansion...), and is worried that the game is becoming entirely too focused on PvP at the expense and detriment to the PvE side of the game. Thoughts? Edit 1= Added in another review link. Edit 2 = Added in another review link

  • The missions leading up to Plagueland patrol are not only very brief, the voice acting is lackluster at best and the writing is horrid.

  • Completely unbiased feedback from someone who has over 200 days played in Destiny , buy the DLC, it's good. For $30, the Raid and private matches alone are worth $30. The rest is icing on the cake. Yes their b******* Lottery RNG b*******, reskin content, and invisible walls, still do exist, but it's good

  • If I only watched movies or read books that got 5 star reviews I would not only be bored but miss out on some pretty good entertainment. People in general are biased as to what they like and dislike. You said so yourself that you're an MMO player at heart which shows your bias towards games you like or prefer. Same goes for the people that write reviews. Most of which is like reading the back cover of a novel at the summary and state you read the whole book. I would hate for you to see too many spoilers but watch some twitch streams instead to get peak at what the new game is really like. We got what amounts to 5 pages of activities to complete, it's like year 3 moments of triumph but we got it in the beginning of the year instead of the end. I will have to admit that this game is no MMO and won't have thousands of missions. I did bring back a lot of year 1 favorite gear and weapons that you can either have drop or buy with legendary engrams. The gameplay from a PvE point of view seems to have gotten more difficult with level 42 enemies in patrol areas. Snipers are everywhere that deal major damage. Players are dying everywhere I look. I haven't died in a strike in over a year yet I die on average 2-3 times per strike and I'm at 345 light, the strike level is 320 light and they are the easy ones without burns. Ultimately it's your choice but the solo game got turned up a notch in this expansion. I have actually had to ask for help to complete some quests, something I haven't had to do since year 1 when I was a noob to FPS games.

      • I think you guys need to start understanding how Bungie wants to do this. The '' End game '' is tied to the expansion, ok, it's not just five missions, it's five missions and then quests, then raid, etc etc. It's all tied together. They want to get you to the end game as soon as possible. We know by now, or should know, that this is not a Bioware game, it's not Mass Effect, where the story unfolds during twenty hours of playtime or wtv. I'm really tired of hearing this crap because we know after two years how they like to do their expansions. I have no sympathy, no one that has ever played Destiny before, had any right to expect this thing to be Skyrim. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm saying there is history here. Destiny has always been about quality, not quantity.

        • I see this with pure cynicism. Short missions, long and numerous challenges for the year. The initial story is short so that you can get back to what "every" Destiny player loves, grinding. I have mixed feelings about this. The Taken King's story was obviously longer. If you enjoyed a longer story, TTK was better than ROI. But, the campaign is, let's face it, just a preface to various quests and grinds. By the time I fire up the story for my 3rd character I want to sprint the whole thing without firing a shot. So, i'm kind of greatful for the shorter campaign. At the same time, i'm annoyed at how soon after completing the campaign you are bombarded by additional quests and a book that has an entire year's road map of activities laid out in front of you. That's to say nothing of the quality of ROI's campaign. Kinda ok.

Just 6 x scan and defend missions running in reverse, took 1 year to design that while other companies are pumping new games every year

          • Addendum to my own earlier review in this thread: While I said earlier that I had fun in the two Archon's Forge instances I had joined, having now tried to do them on purpose, I feel the Forge is very poorly done. It is a public event, but tucked away from patrol so there is no way for the public to know one is active. If you go on the hike down underground to check, you connect to a new instance of the game for the Forge area (like crossing between two patrol areas always has) and it is almost always empty. A boring, wasted trip. If you do find somebody active, it costs a consumable to join. Getting 10 of those is easy, but you still have to decide if burning your own stuff is worth the risk that you'll drop into a room of turnips. Even if they aren't turnips, once their Forge encounter is done, they leave. The offerings don't stack, so anybody there only has one and the "group of randoms running runes for an hour" of CoO is impossible. Even if Bungie increases the loot drops and allows stacking of offerings, the placement of this silly thing on the map is a fundamental hindrance.

            • I quit shortly after TTK (which ruined the game for me) and considered coming back for ROI. I decided to wait since previous dlcs have been pretty sparse in terms of content, and sadly this "expansion" looks to be in the same boat. A two hour campaign, one new strike, one new patrol zone comprised largely of recycled content, and a new raid for $30? No thanks.

                • Well I'm not sure why reviewers are complaing? Clearly they're fools. Bungie stated months ago it was only 5 main story missions. Just free quests afterwards. They even said the size of the dlc is between house of wolves and taken king. I respect there might not be enough content for your liking. My point is that we all knew the rough size of the content it would be. These reviewers are just being idiots over something we already knew before purchase.

                • Agreed. I was a Destiny fanboy after playing the beta. I was hooked, I admit it, I bought the game and two dlcs straight away. Then TTK came along and really made me question how this company does business but I'm still a fuc$&ng fan boy and was talked into getting RoI by my mate. Previously, I was one of those guys who had plenty of time to take off at work so prior to the release of the game, TDB and HoW I took time off to play. I get paid time off...I've done less on days off. However, I didn't plan on buying RoI so I wasn't planning on asking for time off but against my better judgement I decided to buy it to run with my mate through it and it literally took no time to do those lame story missions last night. Yes, they all had a fresh coat of paint splattered on some old crap, yes they were "new" but they weren't very difficult. The last fight was pretty lackluster to say the least. "Here's a flaming great axe, run around and charge it from these flame pits and smash these enemies...guess what, you just did in 5 minutes what all the Iron Lords, the self proclaimed "greatest warriors", couldn't do. Congrats, here's your sword. Now run along and wait to buy up the next 5 mission $30 "dlc" 🐏"

                      • The few main story missions are not the entirety of the DLC... I agree it was cut short, but it was the same with TTK. The main story up to Regicide was pretty short 2-4 hours depending on how you played, you could finish it in no time. Rise of Iron campaign took me 2-3 hours, which is comparable. Beyond the main story missions in TTK there were still a large collection of quest chains to complete, weapons to earn, places to explore a new raid and new PvP modes/maps. RoI is no different in that regard, it's bigger than TDB, HoW and maybe slightly smaller than TTK in some ways, but not all, as the Plaguelands is a significantly large area in comparison to the dreadnaught. I'm sure there are a lot of hidden secrets and plenty more things to do with more quests to unlock. The DLC hasn't been out for very long, I only just did the campaign last night after that I found that I still had at least 5 more questlines to complete, maybe more, and I haven't even really explored the plaguelands yet to see what else it has to offer.

But damn, the end of that quest.. IT WAS -blam!-ING EPIC! One of the most amazing feelings I have had in a video game. Definitely destiny's number one moment. It filled you with nostalgia, power, awe, destruction. It was beautifully crafted and well put together. It made you feel like that was YOUR Gally. Not one that dropped for you, but it was yours specifically. Yes it is a little dry on pve content, and has had some massive day one issues, but it has had quite a few stand out moments that I never would have expected from destiny had somebody saw year three and had told me back in vanilla destiny. In my opinion, as a mainly PVP player, except for raiding, it did a damn good job over all. I would give it a 8/10.

                        • I never experienced the raid yet. And that is going to be a MAJOR deciding factor for PVE players. Unless you don't raid. The campaign is shorter, but acts in the same way as the Taken king did, with the 3 acts separating the storyline. I'm sure you know how that works. So far, I only experienced the 5 missions plus 1 quest mission, and most of those missions were fantastic, except "download complete." That was terrible. I'm mostly a PVE player. But so far, the expansion seems rather nice for me. It's only day 1 though, so I can't judge that much.

                        •
I appreciate that the author said that he would release a more unilateral review later
Probably not the word you were looking for.
a Campaign that can be played through in 2-3 hours if you take your time!? ... Thoughts?
I wish the base story campaign was longer, but the campaign (in the regard he is taking about) in TTK isn't really much longer. Meet the a Taken. Go to the Dreadnaught. Get access to Oryx. Kill Oryx. If that was all TTK was, it wouldn't have been worth it. RoI's story is shorter, yes. But like TTK the are a number of quests that open after (as mentioned by the reviewer). I haven't finished them all, but they seem of similar playability to the addition quests in TTK. I have only popped into two Archon's Forge instances, and they seem about on par with CoO. Less mechanics for randoms to screw up, which may be nice. One thing I am really pleased with is the new patrol area. Not only is it really beautiful, but patrol beacons actually give challenging missions. We have a level 42 patrol! I like story and lore, and so I do wish there was more. But as a PvE guy also, I see a lot more to do then just a couple hours to do the story missions.

                          •
Campaign that can be played through in 2-3 hours if you take your time!?
Let's be clear about the "campaign". Destiny doesn't have a traditional campaign. Sure, it kinda' hurts the story in the sense that it absolutely hurts the story. I mean, when Salad bar says I have to go to the Cosmodrome and stop the Fallen immediately, and then I dink around in the tower for 45 minutes decrypting engrams, I lose all sense of suspense. The story missions also do not end with the main story. Just like The Taken King, there are a plethora of story missions the continue the adventure for hours. Yes, I finished the main story in about 2 hours, and no, I was not taking my time. I ran my Gjallerwing through as much content as I could. And yes, about 4 quests and 2 strikes opened up after the main story. I would include the raid as part of the story except the raids have no matchmaking and no audio or cut scenes. I also won't include Crucible, even though Crucible was my top activity in Year 2. Once again, however, you have to enjoy all of Destiny to make your money worth it.

The cinematic features and story provided are awesome for what they are. The "journey" to Felwinter's Peak was great. The sound effects and scenery are amazing. I have yet to finish my quests, but have finished the story line from what I can tell. My review may be a little pre-mature, but this is what I have...

The glaring problem is that is was short (the story line). I personally didn't have time to get invested in the characters or the impending doom of a SIVA outbreak. There was no hint and a future threat that could be a raid boss; not like Crota's End, House of Wolves or Taken King, where you got an idea what was coming. The biggest let down was the lack of back story devoted to the Iron Lords. Other than to say they existed before the guardians, you get the idea they are similar to knights. You get to see holder Jolder, but none of the other characters were focused on cinematically (except the Hunter firing the fusion rifle. I was really hoping to get introduced to the team, see their personalities, maybe a punchline about Felwinter's sniper rifle. Maybe even a reference to the Iron Banner and why it was started... Nadda. Again, this is just the base story line, not any of the side quests, so there may be more info ahead. Speaking of the story; the bosses were incredibly underpowered. The aforementioned tank was Destroyed with 4 or 5 shock cannon rounds. The bosses in the SIVA chamber were prone to getting stun locked and just stood there taking a beating while you are free to ignore all the enemies. I think a huge missed opportunity was the mention of reinforcements. Nathan Fillion's replacement Exo-Hunter at Felwinter's Peak, who directs the counter strike, radioed that they were bringing in reinforcements, then amended that statement to "more reinforcements" just as soon as the bases defenses were dropped... (by the way, that mission was a complete remake of the first Dreadnaught mission - dismantle the object preventing reinforcements, then destroy a tank that prevents you from leaving). Anyhow, the situation presented itself as you fighting the SIVA outbreak, potentially getting pushed back before the Calvary arrived for an all out war. Then the Mission Complete screen flashed and... Rewards. Saladin gave me a cute pet name of "young wolf" and eventually I got a neat sword. The sword had no back story or quest like the original exotic swords, which was sad. Anyhow, I really, really enjoy the added weapons, class items, sparrows, ghosts and other odds and ends more than than the story, which, brief as it was, was good, just not enough. The new Patrol area is beautiful. The enemies aren't that much different from regular Fallen and a lot less annoying than the Taken, though they infused some Taken Mechanics like retaliation swarm and axion darts. I personally hate those goddamn things, but at least you can shoot them. Anyhow, that's my initial review so far. Was it worth $30? I am leaning toward yes. I will have to play through some more quests and the added / refurbished strikes. The raid is also something I look forward to.
• Do you still play MMOs? You have to remember this is shooter and while this shouldn't be an excuse, they are not content heavy compared to an MMO. We'll have to wait and see how the Raid turns out to be because if it less than 4 bosses, I doubt it will keep players entertained for more than 2 months. $30 for considerable less content than TTK is a lot to ask for just 1 Raid with less bosses than the last one.
