In Destiny the Traveler sparks a golden age allowing for many advances in technology. Then it all ends in a chaotic destruction from the Darkness. This is happens in modern history as well. The collapse of the Roman Empire. The Romans brought a lot of technological advancement to humans. Then they were destroyed by a influx of outside forces, such as the the Goths,Huns and other tribes. This results in both worlds a loss of technology and progress. The remnant of survivors go to the Traveler as a sign of salvation and protection from the Darkness. This happens in our history as the influx of refugees from the destroyed Western Roman Empire into the East. Then a waiting period happens where things stagnate for a while leading into the Dark Ages in both universes. Then the late Emperor Justinian tasks Belisarius to retake the lost territory. This correlates with the Guardians going to take back the lost territory of
the Humans.

1 ReplyThere are a lot of parallels between destiny, history and mythology. Iron lords with Arthurian legend. The hive with medieval legends (wizards, knights, etc), the cabal with romans (legionnairy, phalanx, centurions), the vex with ancient greece (cyclops, hydra, etc). Even the ahamakara and dragons in medieval mythology (hunted to extinction by knights/guardians). And even designs and names. Gjallerhorn with a very nirse looking spelling. Iron banner with norse again with wolves and trees. Bungie seem to have really done their research and made deliberate links to real world myths and history to encourage speculation.

4 RepliesJust want to point out. Barbriseation of the Roman empire actually made it last longer rather than weaken it. By all modern views for many reasons. One being increased cultural sensitive. More productive people and strong bolster to an over stretched army It was the collaspe of its ability to project power (due to heavy default caused by a huge blunder) and hording the money in easter Rome empire that caused the collapse. The hords crossing over into the wester empire was a symptom of the collapse not a cause.

8 RepliesI have seen a relation to Christianity in Destiny as well. In a way, only hypothetically of course, The Traveler could be viewed as Jesus. The official lore on The Traveler reads as follows...
Everything changed with the coming of the Traveler. It gave us gifts that transformed the solar system and the nature of human life. It ushered in the Golden Age, a time of miracles. But it never shared its deepest secrets. Where did the Traveler come from? Why did it offer us so much? Did it know it was being hunted across the stars? And why, when the Darkness came, did it choose to stay and fight for us? Now the Traveler hangs, silent, above humanity's final sanctuary. It may be healing. It may be dying. It gave everything it had to save us. And now its power lies with us, its Guardians.
If you compare this to the history of Jesus, the similarities seem to be there. Thoughts?
