SBMM: Skill Based Match Making will try to put you up against someone as skilled as you, it will initially search close by then open up the search to all across the country/ internationally until it can find someone on your level regardless how far away they are...
So if you are an average top 50% player with a 1.2 KD then theres literally millions of you guys all over the place, chances are theres someone of your skill level next door to you... you'll find matches much faster and they'll be local more times than not.
Whereas for me, or anyone else in the top 1% with a 2.0+ KD there's literally not many of us, and chancea are most of them are already in a game or offline, so it tries to find a 2.0+ KD player nearby but theres none available so it keeps searching getting further and further away until it can find one even if they're in another country.
Tldr; the higher your KDr the harder it is to find someone on your level, so you'll frequently end up VSing international players.
The lower your KDr the more players there are for you to match against, so you'll frequently have less lag because you'll be playing locals.
Fun fact: insane download speeds aren't important for online gaming... only your ping truly matters really and if you're playing someone internationally it doesnt matter if you both have 500mb down and upload speeds YOU WILL LAG due to the fact your ping will be shit travelling that far...
Am i wrong? Did i miss anything? Has this helped anyone understand why SBMM is so shit...
EDIT: just want to say thanks for everyone keeping this relatively salt free xD and that i believe SBMM takes more into account than just your KD, i feel like its either based off your ELO or a formula very similar to ELO (your ELO is measured by kills/wins/win ratio/KD/the level of opponents your beating etc... its complicated.)
SBMM is bad for everyone...
-
Even as a average 1 kd player the last few months have sucked... especially as a casual player just -blam!-ing around in pvp.
-
1 ReplyThe only way to have good games now is , if you find yourself 5 bad players with K/D around 0.5 and then play with them , or play trails and enjoy the first 5-6 matches. Its gotten real sweaty . Thats not my definition of fun.

6 RepliesSooo.. Virgins get matched up against other virgins. Got it
-
5 RepliesSBMM isn't bad for everyone. Frankly the way it is, as you described it, is bad. Sacrificing connection is never a good idea, and that should be mitigated as much as possible. Also in the case of destiny high ping, where I believe I heard the number 500ms be thrown around, needs to stop. 200 is the absolute maximum, though personally I'd have it at 100. It's not like SBMM really does much either, I still have to carry whole teams on my back against fairly well rounded ones. If it just did it on connection only this would still happen, but the game would at least play properly.

26 RepliesAnother snowflake crying because he can't beat up on lower skilled players. Go cry to your mom, you little bitch.
-
1 Replyso its okay for 99% but not the 1%. well too bad for you.
-
The lag issue is understandable but you mention you are wasting 5-7 mins searching but then you rather wasting 10 mins playing ppl lower than your skill level! It is a waste, I cried everytime I got put into with lv10 and went afk playing fallout 4 while my team slaughtered those poor souls who are never coming back to this pvp, ask bungie to bring dedicated servers and not bring the boring af mm.

If ELO is the key mechanism to look for players then RIP. Imo ELO is very biased and a terrible representative measure for skill. It counts win percentage to high imo. So for example if a player that plays with his friends and gets carried to a 90% win percentage all the time will have a much higher ELO with like 1.0 KD then me that plays solo averaging at 55% win rate, but skill wise way above the carried dude. Ive chcked it and I had multiple players with 0.7 KD above me while I was rocking a 2+ KD. I had significant more kills, games, etc.

2 RepliesI hear you. It takes up to five minutes to find a match - even for the daily 3V3! We're playing Trials a lot these days, even after finishing the cards on all three characters, because finding a match never takes longer than 20 seconds!
-
1 ReplyYeah SBMM is laggy and need to be removed, yesterday i managed to dogged 2 rocket and 1 golden gun and inturn tat guy managed to escaped my fist of havoc and kill me.
-
1 ReplyI am of the same skill with a 2.06 average KD and it usually takes 7-8min to find a match and those matches usually have terrible connection for everyone in them.
-
I shit you not I was gonna make a post asking you how it effects you since I know your KD is ridiculous looks like you beat me to it lol

Edited by Eduardo: 1/25/2016 7:29:36 AMMy 1.10-1.30 k/d characters this week have all marched in latest matches, and the lag now seems more ridiculous than it ever has. We're all struggling. Not to mention the fact that I live in LA means it wouldn't have to search wide, it's a populous city with many gamers. Before sbmm I would have a laggy match once in a while, now it's every match and when I leave to orbit to find a new match with better connections, it won't, it'll send me to fill the spot of the match I abandoned.

1 ReplyEdited by Guardian1983: 1/25/2016 7:16:42 AMDoesnt lag go both ways? But anyways signed!! I want to play noobs so I can boost my stats!!
-
3 RepliesAlso keep in mind, it almost certainly employs some kind of ceiling on ping between peers. As you say, there aren't many people will k/ds as high as yours- however, it most likely starts looking to match you with identical stats, w/l + k/d, and then widens the search to include a larger spread of stats. True skill based matchmaking, strictly, would be next to impossible to employ in a game as popular and fluid as destiny. With private matchmaking, sure- but not with an open pool host migration system. Personally, lag has been less of a problem now than in the past. I blame the uproar on something that happens time and time again. (I do not mean to reference OP here-) Someone gives a half cocked explanation for a fairly complicated game mechanic, that everybody takes as gospel- then to hit the forums and spread the news of the 'newest, most serious problem in the game' I have found my games to be sweatier than before SBMM, but lag still depends on the host, and for the most part I have a pleasurable experience in the crucible.

7 RepliesIt's dumb, who wants to sweat every game, it's suppose to be chill not trials level competition every game
-
4 RepliesYup. SBMM is great for casuals, but not for top 1%
-
Its a sweat fest everymatch it kind of gets stressing makes me log of more often
-
-
I am a barely average crucible player. I also have noticed tons of latency lately. Before, there would be times where my team of randoms would get utterly destroyed but at least there was less red. I can't hit people that rubber band all over the place.

Edited by McGhoo: 1/25/2016 5:58:24 AMI honestly don't think it's bad. I don't mind playing a game and getting smacked because "it's a sweaty" , I'll think back to what I could of done and learn from it. From what I've played and who I've played with, a HUGE portion of the player base are Americans. I'm from the UK and I know most of the time I'll be playing off American host. Being shot through things and having a red bar teleporting around are NOT new occurrences and will more than likely always happen. I honestly just think people are massively over exaggerating on the lag because they're so hurt about their stats starting to go downhill, because afterall no matter what anybody says they'll frequently keep an eye on their stats and care about them to some extent.
-
2 RepliesIf you had for example a guy with a .30 kd it would be hard to find a match too so it's not just when your kd gets higher it's harder to find a team, it's lower kd's too
-
1 ReplyToo long, didn't read.

Yup. Pretty much. I'm not that great and I feel the lag myself. It's harsh. My D/U is 8/1.5 but my ping to XbL is 38Ms not bad. Got a clean connection no router just a modem straight ppoe to my xbox. Only thing that needs Internet when I'm using it anyhow. But I get these Europe kids half the time and ya. Good luck doing anything. Anyone. Seriously. Had a game yesterday where we just gave up. No one could hit anyone. Invited their team to our party and flipped a coin for who would take the plate each round.

Um who actually matches other than sweats... Kd just means you pub stomp tbh... Just sweat man its a lot more fun it gets you better and you can see how good you actually are
