SBMM: Skill Based Match Making will try to put you up against someone as skilled as you, it will initially search close by then open up the search to all across the country/ internationally until it can find someone on your level regardless how far away they are...
So if you are an average top 50% player with a 1.2 KD then theres literally millions of you guys all over the place, chances are theres someone of your skill level next door to you... you'll find matches much faster and they'll be local more times than not.
Whereas for me, or anyone else in the top 1% with a 2.0+ KD there's literally not many of us, and chancea are most of them are already in a game or offline, so it tries to find a 2.0+ KD player nearby but theres none available so it keeps searching getting further and further away until it can find one even if they're in another country.
Tldr; the higher your KDr the harder it is to find someone on your level, so you'll frequently end up VSing international players.
The lower your KDr the more players there are for you to match against, so you'll frequently have less lag because you'll be playing locals.
Fun fact: insane download speeds aren't important for online gaming... only your ping truly matters really and if you're playing someone internationally it doesnt matter if you both have 500mb down and upload speeds YOU WILL LAG due to the fact your ping will be shit travelling that far...
Am i wrong? Did i miss anything? Has this helped anyone understand why SBMM is so shit...
EDIT: just want to say thanks for everyone keeping this relatively salt free xD and that i believe SBMM takes more into account than just your KD, i feel like its either based off your ELO or a formula very similar to ELO (your ELO is measured by kills/wins/win ratio/KD/the level of opponents your beating etc... its complicated.)
SBMM is bad for everyone...

1 ReplyThe lag is real with SBMM

1 ReplyEdited by DaywalkerSpankz: 1/25/2016 5:35:26 PMI have a 1.5 and my friends and I have been matched with people in southern Mexico (all red bars) , Britain (all the time, but usually they have a decent connection), many different European countries (connection really varies) .. The struggle is real... We have stopped playing as much crucible because it is just frustrating. If someone has a bad connection to the host for more than a minute, it should kick them.

4 RepliesShut up, the reason you have a 2.0 or better kd is because you bang scrubs all, quit crying and actually play skilled players. Muted.
-
3 RepliesEdited by BMW E86: 1/25/2016 4:28:25 PMSo in the body you say SBMM is only bad for high KD players then at the end you say it is bad for everyone. I agree it is bad for people who are not the average player, but for the average and below average player it is good.
-
7 RepliesFirst off you sick cause you use xim4, second it's based off medal score not kd
-
4 RepliesSo when did bungie say SBMM is based on K/D?
-
1 ReplyI'm seeing a lot of people that like sbmm... why? I rather have an awsome lag free game then being sweaty all day chasing blinking titans.
-
4 RepliesIf SBMM is removed, then I'll simply quit any match where the enemy team is blowing us away Have fun.
-
3 RepliesI'm pretty sure your speed and connection type/quality will have an impact on Ping, but generally there isn't a whole lot you can do if you're in North America and being paired up against someone living in say Africa or Australia - there's going to be game-breaking lag. Me personally I have a 50/10 fiber optic dedicated line so I just roll my eyes whenever people tell me my connection sucks (I AM sick of occasionally seeing that stupid false NAT-3 warning though when I absolutely do not have a type-3 NAT)
-
He's right.
-
11 RepliesDude I'm on the top 500 as far as ELO goes in like 4 or 5 different playlist was #1 in Rumble, I have to agree this new matchmaking is f'ing trash. Some days I want to relax I don't want to try hard on EVERY single match. It's ridiculous.
-
2 RepliesGet worse scrub!
-
Not exactly. The person next door to you is actually least likely to be on the same skill level. We don't know exactly bungies parameters but I'm willing to guess they're pretty refined. Therefore a small difference in skill separates people, and every group ends up connecting all over the world to others.
-
That pretty much covers it, the sbmm is actually effecting everyone's connection though, not just the top 25% I'm in the hella average category and the lag has increased, but the difficulty of the matches hasn't. It's effecting the majority less, I get the lag from sbmm but the difficulty stays the same, where as the top end players end up getting both harder opponents and lag.
-
2 RepliesSSBM is the best.
-
4 RepliesI feel like i get -blam!-ed everytime i play because i only do trials and elimination and im too 1-2 percent and every match i play is extremely laggy.
-
11 RepliesI offer the inverse to your situation. I am an average pvp player. Sometimes I wreck and sometimes I get wrecked. Since SBMM has been launched, I have been getting my ass handed to me left and right. My team went 0-5 11 times this week during trials. Nobody on my team has the lighthouse badge, yet the overwhelming majority of my opponents had 2-3 of such players. To me, this is NOT skill-based. It is shit and it is broken

1 ReplyOther side of the fence. I'm not above average. In anything really. Some of my friends are. When I'm in a fireteam with them the crucible can be very unpleasant. When I run it solo it's so easy and I'm always top 2 kd at the end of the game. I'll admit playing better opponents has made me better but my question is: how does sbmm work while in fireteams? It obviously has some sort of effect.
-
You said it. Im the same seat.
-
4 RepliesIs it not possible that your kd is dropping because you're playing people closer to your skill?
-
-
7 RepliesBy the way, kd has nothing to do with the matchmaming, its average team elo in that event My kd is 1.3 but im diamond elo, im not a snipe fagg, I prefer close up primaries and I dont play rumble So all I hear with a 2.0 kd is "guys I stay back and get the opportune kills instead of playing the game"
-
So true
-
Kds mean very little in this game. I have friends with high kds simply because they always play in teams and get matched up against noobs all the time Facing high kd players usually is easy, few are actually a challenge that react and play very intelligently Combat ratings show more than your kd will as well as looking through all of their overall stats. I highly doubt it goes by kds to match u up properly Bungie thinks giving u a team full of awful randoms balances everything out against a full team somehow... Sbmm just has certain criteria as a priority regarding your performance when searching, meaning connection isn't a priority causing crazy latency issues The lag comp and horrible rating system is to blame. For -blam!-s sake there are high kd players with goid rating that inly shotgun and noobutbe in full teams which bungie considers "top tier" yet face them head up they're average or below in terms of ability
-
My only complaint is Mercying a team then "we're breaking up..." And I get put directly into a game when my team is getting mercy'ed as I land or the other team has full supers and heavy. I don't play much clash/control much these days because of this fact.
-
4 RepliesSBMM is a lie. I went in classic 6V6 playlist with 5 other scrubs. We got put in a clash match against 6 randoms (no fireteam). 4 of the 6 on the opposing team had KD over 2 and one was a top 100 player. The other 2 of our opponents were plebs like us. I don't think any of my fireteam was a top 100,000 player. We all quit. It is set up to try to force 50/50 win/loss. It seems like as you get more consecutive wins, it ramps up the difficulty faster and faster. God forbid you should win a match that the matchmaking gods were certain you would lose, they will call in the pros for total annihilation.
