I can agree with you on almost everything. Skyrim wasn't the best game for magic. That would have to be Morrowind and Oblivion. My personal fav was Oblivion. Lol

True, Skyrim did get rid of spellcrafting. I usually don't focus heavily on magic, so I hadn't considered that.
