After a full year, an OG decides to leave Destiny behind.

Before I write this, I want to make one thing clear: this entire story of mine is going to be heartfelt. It is going to be respectful and refrain from profanity. I only ask that if you are going to comment or share an opinion, to do the same. Hey fellow Guardians. I'm Tyler. I picked up my Destiny edition white PS4 just under a year ago. I had no idea what Destiny was, save the E3 jokes about it taking forever to release. I set the game aside and began playing 2k as any college student would. As soon as my friends learned of my recent purchase, they told me to jump on Destiny immediately; to join their fireteam! (Whatever that was.) And so, in complete unbias and with zero expectation, I began my Destiny journey, literally the week after Xur sold Red Death for the first time. I missed launch, yes. But my friends said it was no big deal. "You'll get a 'Gjallarhorn' in no time!" they told me. Whatever Skyrim-sounding terminology they were reassuring me with went right over my head. Becoming Legend for me started out as a Hunter. I could throw knives and move around fast. Badass. Crucible sucked. What was a shoulder charge and how do I use it? How does that Warlock's health go back up so quickly? All I can do is run fast and shoot 3 fiery bullets... I thus began a Titan. And I fell in love. They were the Crucible bullies of Vanilla Destiny. Bullet spongey. Fist of Panic-ey. It was just all so aggressive to use a Titan, and so it stuck. But I also loved the Titan for another reason: the Defender class. You see, when I play a game, I am entirely team-oriented. I want to provide my team with as much help as possible. I want them to look to me when we're in a pinch. Not to expect some headshot sniper wizardry, but maybe some overshields, or some buffs that make their guns hit harder. I loved that. I loved keeping my team alive, and making them stronger in the process. I played Destiny for a long time; became familiar with the mechanics. Acquired all the best gear after merciless grinding. As soon as I stepped foot into the Vault of Glass, I was hooked. I was addicted. This was too fun. Me and five of my bros had to communicate and overcome various stages and bosses to acquire the best gear the game had to offer. This game was amazing. I would play for hours, mesmerized by the glow of my television, long after my roommate had fallen asleep. And it happened again. And again. And again. Another raid! More Iron Banners! More DLC! A prison of baddies! Trials! Oh how I loved Trials! I did it all. I've done it all. Besides maxing out my grimoire, I've done everything there is to do in Destiny. I've had countless moments of throwing my hands in the air and cheering and met some of the coolest people in the gaming-verse. I wouldn't trade some of my experiences for anything in the world. Destiny brought so many things into my life. It brought senses of accomplishment that I have never felt while playing video games. I am an outdoor enthusiast and avid basketball player. Destiny brought me back to the video game world, and showed me that it can be just as rewarding as climbing a mountain or putting up game-winning shots. I forgave Bungie time and time again throughout my journey. I forgave them when my account randomly lost an exotic. I forgave them when they kept Gjallarhorn from me until TWO days before Xur sold it again. Cuz it was just a game. And I loved it no matter what happened really. And then The Taken King happened. I was so excited when that first cutscene flashed onto my screen. Bungie is trying! They're actually trying! Look at this! There's actual character personality and depth to the universe! It was great. It really was. But then... I can't use any of my guns? Really? Every single gun I've collected and cherished is now useless? Okay... shrug it off, whatever. Look at this totally cool blue gun that is now better than your beloved Gheleons. The problem with The Taken King is the new way that Light Score works. Every lvl 40 legendary has a chance to roll on a damage/armor rating of 280-300. And the new shiny raid gear rolls 300-310. This system has shattered the game for me. I don't care about being max lvl of 310. The closest I can get with my Titan as of right now with my complete raid armor set is 308. What bothers me is it's all left up to RNG for those 300-310 rating rolls. If I have a piece of crucible gear that I like quite a lot for the perks, I have to run the raid multiple times, pray for that specific item to drop, then infuse it into the crucible gear. And even then the ~280 piece of gear that I infused with my ~305 raid gear is now just an exhausted ~286. And I have to wait for next week to hope to get the same piece of raid gear to infuse it again. Getting a non-raid piece of armor to light 310 for Iron Banner is absurd. It's a new level of grind-and-wait that I've never experienced in Destiny before. You already took all my beloved year 1 guns from me, now you want more of my time for infusing? For trying to re-acquire all my old gear that had great perks? You're making me do everything I worked for again, but make it take twice as long for that one specific piece of gear? I'm sorry Bungie, I can't forgive you this time... For me, it's just time to put Destiny away. For good. Vault of Glass has no point now. Crota pointing me is just an excuse to help my friends get Nechrochasm. Everything about the Prison is now mute. The game became 1 dimensional, and the only beneficial thing to do is shoot Oryx with the Touch of Malice. I just can't do it anymore. I feel like they took the entire game from me and handed me one DLC to play. But don't worry, you can slow clap in Crucible now... The game's over for me, guys. I appreciate if you took the time to read this. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I just can't do it anymore. It's been such a good experience. But this Titan is too battered and bruised. I love this community. I love this game. But I don't love this DLC. Till the next time, guardians. I hope you all become legend. But the darkness has consumed one more. Guardian down.

  • We still run Vault and Crota. Our last Crota run last week was the most fun yet. These things may be irrelevant gear wise but they are still as fun as ever. Hell Vault became irrelevant long ago but has remained a blast to play.

    • Why do people feel the need to announce that they are leaving a game. I have stopped playing dozens of games that I have liked and disliked. I never felt they need to tell people.

    • Aye, I was a little disappointed the rest of the game was rendered irrelevant.
I just summed up your essay in a sentence hehehehe
Maybe try picking up Elite Dangerous if you are on XB1? Tis good fun...

    • You nailed it, pre TTK with trials was the best Destiny, the only thing they needed to change was the weapon balancing, which they'll do again by needing to nerf pulse rifles. Destiny, the best beta I've ever played.

      • They need to fix the loot system. They said the dreadnaught is a treasure filled fortress but it's not. My Titan went into the raid with a 310 chest piece and all I got out of it was another 2 chest pieces rated 300 & 302. Hadium flake farming? So disrespectful! They claimed to learn and progress the game but it's actually worse than vanilla in a lot of ways.

        • I'm right there with you. This game has progressively gotten weaker and weaker in the mechanics. It's disappointing. I'll be playing Black Ops 3 when it comes out and Destiny probably never again.

        • The way you level up now it's a disgrace before it was better, compared to what it is now of course, oh look got a pair of boots for the 10th time still not a 310 drop FML

        • I remeber when everything in this game for me revolved around acquiring gear to be better in crucible but now the most op weapon in the crucible is a lag switch. Sigh i have just accepted that destiny's pvp experience is a novalty

        • Have to agree on the new infusion system- I'm not a fan. It feels like too much work taking too many resources. I like to try out new legendary weapons which can take some time to properly get a feel of. This means hanging on to blue-level weapons in inventory which creates clutter and takes more time to sort out. There should be no reason for blue weapons to have higher light levels than legendaries or exotics. It makes no sense. I think the old system with etheric light was much more straightforward.

        • I havent bothered with the new raid at all. I cant be arsed with the hassle of LFG and having to find and play for an hour or 2 with a bunch of randoms. So i mainly just run a few strikes and crucible. Im not great but ive been enjoying IB so far. I am only playing on my warlock these days, i used to have 3 titans and would sometimes do raids on each of them in the same week. So i guess i am playing less these days. Maybe i will quit one day, sooner or later. Halo 5 will definitely distract me for a while. But if/when i do quit destiny, i certainly wont expect a bunch of randoms on a forum to give a shit. That is the tragedy of your post, it is well written and you clearly put a lot of thought in to it, but honestly (and i dont mean this to sound harsh) no one cares if people they dont know stop playing a computer game. Anyway take it easy and enjoy the extra free time you will have.
