Common misconception: It is in fact, not possible.
For those of you that knew this already, congratulations, this world still has hope.
For those of you that think it is possible: you are - sadly - not alone.
Edit-1: Just looked at these responses. It seems that the most common explanation as to why you could terraform Jupiter happens to be: "space magic"
Touché Guardians, touché.
Edit-2: For those of you that are wise enough to know that the Gas Giants are not gaseous all the way through, that is awesome for you! There is no need to repeatedly tell me that, because I'm well aware of that. Still doesn't change my feelings on terraforming Jupiter or the like.
Edit-3: Wow, just checked the trending page of the forums and found this on there with 1.2K comments. Didn't realize that many people responded to this. That being said, I would like to thank the academy for this honor as well as all the internet trolls, wanna-be Neil deGrasse Tysons, and idiots. I couldn't have done it without you.
Edit-4: For those of you claiming that we could just solidify the gas, here's my explanation as to why you should all go think of better things to do than argue with my pretentious ass:
Take Jupiter for example: it is made of primarily molecular hydrogen and helium. If you used temperature to "un-sublime" or solidify the gas into a solid surface of sorts, you have to incorporate the melting temperature of the mostly hydrogen and helium atmosphere.
For starters, the temperature to solidly molecular hydrogen is around 14K.
If you didn't know, that's like negative 259 Celsius and is almost at absolute zero.
Helium is even lower at a whopping 1K
Account in melting point depression phenomenon of non-pure substances and we have a real issue… lol

Regardless Jupiter is the next planet in the grim cards
-
2 RepliesWell all space magic aside, destiny takes place in the future. So while we might not be able to terraform it RIGHT NOW, we may be able to 200 years from now
-
Well from the looks of it I am sure the Vex inhabited those gas giants eons ago
-
But we also need to remember that this is a video game.... A made up story, where I think just about anything goes in a sci-fi....
-
14 RepliesYes they can because terraforming can be many different things. Just changing the atmosphere to reflect Earth is terraforming. So if the gas giant was made up of human friendly gases, it could be colonized. Terraforming is not just changing the ecology of the planet.
-
4 RepliesYes you could! If you could move a gas giant close to the sun, the solar winds would strip away the gas she'll and leave a rocky core. Move said core to the habitable zone of a star and you have a super earth. Boom!
-
You're not the traveller, I don't have to listen to you
-
Ya but Venus is not a gas giant and yet in real life you couldn't even land because of the storms. So destiny is just a fantasy but that's why it's good
-
They can be terraformed into suns. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
-
It's a game for all I care I could be walking on the surface of Jupiter
-
Its just a game chill
-
Anything is possible
with space magic
-
I don't think the gas giant planets were ever terraformed. Their moons, maybe, as we've seen concept art of a frozen city that was on one of Jupiter's moons, but the gas giants being terraformed is something that I think never happened during the Golden Age.
-
It's a video game. Nuff said.
-
6 RepliesWhat if there was a way to make Jupiter's rings be a patrol? Like the Vex put teleporters on them and you'd be able to go all around the rings. That's be cool
-
2 RepliesWho said you could? Like where is this coming from?
-
Dont see how this matters when you never land on Jupiter, in any part of the game
-
1 ReplyI also can't make my body spontaneously burst into flames and start chucking flaming hammer bombs all over the place.
-
1 ReplyHave you considered the possibility to build habitats that float within or slightly above the gas giants, using the excessive hydrogen as a fuel source? It would in no means be traditional terraforming but might allow human colonization to a certain extent.
-
1 ReplyIt's fiction, silly. Is this bait? I can never tell.
-
1 ReplyLooking at the comments... I'm slowly losing faith....
GG to those that are actually intelligent and have common sense.
-
3 RepliesThe traveler can do anything because space magic. Not counting that fact though, you don't need to terraform the planet to live on it. Floating structures seem fine to me.
-
3 RepliesMaking this thread here is pointless. Most of these morons are booger picking 12 year olds trying to keyboard commandos.
-
Your right, it's not possible with current technology. But the world of destiny is far in the future, after a golden age. A time when everything advanced very quickly, so it could make sense to patrol a gaseous planet in destiny.
-
Why would we even need to terraform Jupiter?

5 RepliesWhat is the science behind the bird I saw on the Moon???
