Common misconception: It is in fact, not possible.
For those of you that knew this already, congratulations, this world still has hope.
For those of you that think it is possible: you are - sadly - not alone.
Edit-1: Just looked at these responses. It seems that the most common explanation as to why you could terraform Jupiter happens to be: "space magic"
Touché Guardians, touché.
Edit-2: For those of you that are wise enough to know that the Gas Giants are not gaseous all the way through, that is awesome for you! There is no need to repeatedly tell me that, because I'm well aware of that. Still doesn't change my feelings on terraforming Jupiter or the like.
Edit-3: Wow, just checked the trending page of the forums and found this on there with 1.2K comments. Didn't realize that many people responded to this. That being said, I would like to thank the academy for this honor as well as all the internet trolls, wanna-be Neil deGrasse Tysons, and idiots. I couldn't have done it without you.
Edit-4: For those of you claiming that we could just solidify the gas, here's my explanation as to why you should all go think of better things to do than argue with my pretentious ass:
Take Jupiter for example: it is made of primarily molecular hydrogen and helium. If you used temperature to "un-sublime" or solidify the gas into a solid surface of sorts, you have to incorporate the melting temperature of the mostly hydrogen and helium atmosphere.
For starters, the temperature to solidly molecular hydrogen is around 14K.
If you didn't know, that's like negative 259 Celsius and is almost at absolute zero.
Helium is even lower at a whopping 1K
Account in melting point depression phenomenon of non-pure substances and we have a real issue… lol

3 RepliesMy answer to you. Vex. I'm sure if the Vex wanted Venus and Mercury. They'd make it so those planets could be terraformed

3 RepliesWhy the -blam!- does logic matter? It's a game where you are a floaty space man that kills aliens and dies but came back to life because a Rubik's cube wanted you too.

Edited by vitisku1: 10/10/2015 7:08:29 AMWith science that doesnt exist yet of course its possible.if the traveller had the power to reposition planets, he could move a gas giant closer to the sun, which could theoretically remove the planets atmosphere theough thermodynamic escape. If he had the ability to move a gas giant then replacing that atmosphere with a nitrogen oxygen mix preferable to hunan and introduce carbon to the planet and speed up the process of forming land by about 3 billion years, doesnt really seem like a diffcult task. Or, you know, its just a -blam!-ing game and lighten up. #spacemagic

Edited by gr1zzlar: 10/10/2015 6:55:11 AMYeah and magic frakking exists as well...I'm not saying it's possible, im just saying there's more in this game than that, that is unrealistic. It's called a video game. What makes it great is that the possibilities are endless and not restricted by "our" universes physics. So some good ole space magic makes it possible, because a giant floating sentient being make AI ghost who resurrect people and do all sorts of technological wonders by emitting a beam of light...

1 ReplyTo be fair, terraforming Venus and Mercury would be basically impossible as well. Mercury especially is WAY too close to the sun for any life to actually survive there. The Traveler's power is capable of a lot. Terraforming a gas giant? Sure, why not?
-
1 ReplyYou obviously haven't falcon punched a gas giant in order to terraform it. It's hard work but it pays off.
-
I don't think they ever right out say they teraformed a gas giant I do know theywrote that the teraformed Jupiter's moons and built structures in gas giants
-
1 ReplyAnything is possible if you believe.
-
The -blam!-? Next you're gonna tell me humans can't do magic... Smh... You guys believe this guy over here over there?!?!
-
It is possible... in fiction.
-
There's this really awesome thing called the suspension of disbelief that makes it so you can do whatever you damn please in a piece of fiction.
-
The gas would experience deposition.. I'm pretty sure that out of everything the Traveler has done this would be well within it's ability.
-
We just don't know how yet
-
Well, according to Destiny, they can
i know they cant irl tho
-
Withen reality, gas giants can't be terraformed. However, in the video game world. Well. Video Game logic.
-
You're looking for realism in the wrong place bro.
-
You know how you can turn lead into gold? No? Well I'm sure with a little space magic, it wouldn't be all that difficult. And if you can do that, changing the elemental makeup of a gas giant and turning it into a solid really isn't too far fetched. And once you have solid ground, creating an atmosphere should by this point be a piece of cake. Impossible just means we aren't smart enough to figure it out yet.
-
Some would use space magic as a defense, but I prefer this one.... We are in a vex simulation.

2 RepliesHumans can't come back from the dead or conjure flaming hammers from nothing either. Space magic.
