Changes in Access Policy on Bungie.net

Hey there, Community. At Bungie, we’re committed to making our website a safe, well-lit place for the community. As the engaged innkeepers of Bungie.net, we’ve learned that accountability is a great ingredient in the recipe for a healthy community. When a user has some personal investment associated with their account, they’re more likely to take pride in the way they communicate with other people. Since its inception and throughout various evolutions, Bungie.net has served a community that shares a game. The game (Destiny, for example) is the thing we all have in common – the unifying element that brings us together in the first place. In order to ensure that the end-users who are accessing the public forums on Bungie.net have a greater interest in the quality of the conversation, we’re going to require that each account be linked to a Guardian with some player history. At current, that includes more than 99% of our active community. Bungie.net accounts are free, easy to make, and easy to link to your playable character. Your access to the public forums is tied to your Guardian, but your account can still be used to enjoy many of the free social features that we provide. If you’re not playing Destiny, you’ll still have access to Private Groups. If you’re a new user who is seeking support from us on the #Help forum, you can find some instructions on how to create and link an account here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Article/12130 If you need assistance with creating your account, let us know here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Troubleshoot?oid=13633 It is our hope that you’ll enjoy a long stay in our online home. Throw down some roots. Make some friends. Play some games. Be excellent to each other. DeeJ, out.

Guys. Just download the demo, make a random Character, and keep your Bungie.net account. It may require some time to download it, but if you really want to keep your account, do it.

          • Here deej, a little belair for ya Now, this is a story all about how My life got flipped-turned upside down And I'd like to take a minute Just sit right there I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air In west Philadelphia born and raised On the playground was where I spent most of my days Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school When a couple of guys who were up to no good Started making trouble in my neighborhood I got in one little fight and my mom got scared She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air' I begged and pleaded with her day after day But she packed my suit case and sent me on my way She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket. I put my Walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'. First class, yo this is bad Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass. Is this what the people of Bel-Air living like? Hmmmmm this might be alright. But wait I hear they're prissy, bourgeois, all that Is this the type of place that they just send this cool cat? I don't think so I'll see when I get there I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air Well, the plane landed and when I came out There was a dude who looked like a cop standing there with my name out I ain't trying to get arrested yet I just got here I sprang with the quickness like lightning, disappeared I whistled for a cab and when it came near The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror If anything I could say that this cab was rare But I thought 'Nah, forget it' - 'Yo, home to Bel Air' I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8 And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo home smell ya later' I looked at my kingdom I was finally there To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

Makes sense. There will be less trolls who don't even own Destiny on the forums. Haters with accounts will be banished. Bungie's connection with Halo ended 5 years ago. Those who owned the Bungie Halo games, have an account and do not own Destiny will not be losing any sleep that their inactive accounts will be removed. This will be a forum for actual Destiny players. I don't understand the butthurt over this. I doubt any current Halo players, who don't own Destiny, even use these forums anymore and if there are it must be a teeny tiny percentage. Offtopic? Its usually full of nonsense like "I changed my baby's diaper, AMA". If the old Halo community are in the Offtopic section of these forums asking what their favorite food, game, TV show, actor etc. is on every second thread, then they are not here for Halo are they? There's a thing called Reddit nowadays which I am sure have a dedicated Halo section like Destiny. True Halo/Bungie fans bought Destiny. Doesn't matter if they played Destiny for two days or played it for one year, they are still Destiny players. A large proportion of old Halo players are Destiny players. Those that aren't were charlatan Bungie fans. There is absolutely no way a true Halo fan would pass up on Destiny with the marketing it had between early 2013 and the launch in September 2014. This game sold on Bungie's leagcy alone, period!

                                  • Been a while since I posted on the forums rather than just private groups, but this seems like a good time to jump back in. I can imagine some good reasons for why you felt the need to make this change- primarily to counter the numbers of alt accounts of people who can't be bothered to live by the code of conduct. That being said, this is going to hurt a whole lot of users, a lot of good users that have a lot of quality discussion to provide. While this does solve some legitimate problems, I think it's an overreaction. I haven't been here as long as some more prominent community members, nor am I as active, but I have been around since a decently long time before Destiny was unveiled, and that's long enough to know that this community is not just a random collection of users. It's filled with people who have become friends through your games, current and former, and through the very same quality discussion that you want to encourage. Now some of those same users are going to be actively prevented from providing quality discussion to the forums. That just doesn't feel right. I would have no qualms if you had chosen to implement this policy for all new accounts going forward, but the current situation really seems unfair to those people who have a long history here but for whatever reason have not chosen to play Destiny. I've enjoyed Destiny and talking about Destiny here, but there's always been more to this site and this community than just Destiny. I hope you and the rest of the community team and the web team haven't forgotten that. Just my two cents.

Alright, I know this is a way to get rid of alts, but it isn't a good solution. Device bans would've worked about 1,000 times better. All this "solution" is doing is getting rid of your most loyal users. The ones who have been around since the beginning of halo. Now they can't can't even participate in conversations because you guys decided that if they don't like or can't afford your newest game, they aren't good enough for your forums. How is that fair to the older users who shaped your community? How can you guys say the new users are more valuable than the old ones? Honestly for a community manager, you don't know the community very well. This is ridiculous and you know it. Please allow them back, they really did shape your community, many users will agree. But I guess I don't expect you to actually read this, considering you've never even responded to a single pm anyone I know has sent. In short, RIP bungie.net, hello destiny.net, and goodbye xi GoinHam.
