United States of America = Americans Mexican United States = Mexicans
-
They kind of are Americans. They are North Americans, but they are still Americans.

8 RepliesMost of them are stupid. Especially trump supporters. Anything south of the border is Mexico to them, even though it's a whole other continent
-
No it's North America. They call their small region America as in United States of America hence they are American
this is not fact. Please disregard this comment
3 RepliesEdited by Ceriin: 9/20/2015 3:49:09 AM1.North and South America are each their own continent, not subcontinents. Central America is hardly big enough to be considered a subcontinent. 2. The reason we call ourselves Americans is because it's based off the name of our country. We call people from Mexico Mexicans. People from Canada Canadians. People from Brazil Brazilians. Etc. I am from the United States of America, therefore American. 3. "Them stupid Americans" I can no longer take you seriously.

20 RepliesSo you're saying we should conquer the other 30+ countries

Their country is called America. Those from Canada are Canadians, those from Brazil are Brazilians, those from Cuba are Cubans. Those from (The United States of) America are Americans.

I am an American and even I think calling people Americans is -blam!-ing retarded. Maybe foreshadowing for the impending conquest?

That's because there's only one America.

2 RepliesIf the EU were the USE, then I think most people would call its citizens Europeans.

Most of the world recognizes "American" as a term for a US citizen. While I will grant you that individuals from South America will sometimes use the term "estadounidense" rather than "americano" to refer to a US citizen, most of the world does not differentiate in this way. EX: English (North America / South America) United States of America = American Canada = Canadian German (Nordamerika / Südamerika) Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika = Amerikaner Kanada = Kanadier French (Amérique du Nord / Amérique du Sud) Etats-Unis d'Amerique = Américain Canada = Canadien Chinese (北美 / 南美) 美國 = 美國人 加拿大 = 加拿大人 I suppose you could use the argument that Germans, French, English, etc. are sometimes referred to as "Europeans", however this brings up the argument as to whether this is based on their continent of residence or ancestry. An individual of Chinese descent is often referred to as "Asian" even if they are a third generation Canadian citizen. Similarly, "African-American" is used to signify an individual of African descent, regardless of any personal ties to Africa. By this argument, only individuals who are of indigenous American lineage could refer to themselves as "American" in this context (citizens of the US could still refer to themselves as "American" however in the context of nationality, however). On the other hand, there is also the case of whites in Africa who refer to themselves as "African" rather than "European". A quick question: If someone asked "What are you?" would your first response be your nationality, ancestry or continental residence? I'd bet in most cases people would identify with their nationality first. tl;dr A word is defined by how it is used and there are three usages of the term "American": 1) A citizen of the USA (nationality). (<-- most common usage) 2) An individual of native American descent (ancestry) 3) An individual living in the Americas (continent of residence) Is it wrong to not include other individuals residing in the Americas as "Americans"? Yes and no, depending on which usage you're going for.

1 ReplyYou P.C., bro?

14 RepliesWell it's not just the United States. It's the United States of America. We are the only country to have America in it's name. Also who cares? I mean it's just a word to generalize people.
-
Because the US is also included in 'America'. I live in the UK. If somebody called me European, that would be accurate, as the UK is in Europe.
-
imagine a country called United States of Europe, would it be OK to call them Europeans?
I think it's safe to say, if you're from Europe, you're European. Same with US and Canada and Central.
-
Yeah, I'd be cool with the USE calling themselves Europeans.
